- Sony APSC vs Full Frame 18-105 vs 24-105 (Both f/4) Sony a7iii vs Sony a6500 Auto Focus & Sharpness Test. I've been thinking about selling all of my Sony APSC gear and figured I'd do a quick down and dirty test to see how they stack up. I love the Sony a6500 and the 18-105 and purchased the 24-105 when I bought the a7iii thinking it would be a great replacement in full frame. Let me know what you think of the sample images. This is most definitely not a scientific test, but more or less some quick down and dirty samples. We may have rushed this video a bit (and it shows). I have to admit that I didn't care much for the 24-105, I call it the 'Wish I would have bought the G Master Lens". I'd go so far as to say I was disappointed when I bought it, but after doing this video, I'm heavily rethinking that. Maybe I need to give it a chance.
I mention in this video that the auto focus struggles because of the lens but it is also the camera that makes the difference here as-well. I'm sure a lot of you will catch that, just wanted to clear it up here. Thanks!
We greatly appreciate you watching! Don't forget to like comment and subscribe to let us know what you thought about the video!
RAW & jpeg images linked soon.

This is a great video as I’m looking to purchase the 24-105, do you happen to remember what mode did you have the camera in for these shots? Anything on manual since I keep seeing the shutter speed change?
I have never understood how the lens affects focus accuracy. Speed I can understand due to different motors, but the accuracy/focus metering is done by the camera and all the hundreds of focus points. So how can different lenses perform differently in terms of accuracy on the same body?
Despite some comments, this was handy as I have the 18-105 and looking to see difference if upgrading to ff rig. Many thanks.
Thanks!
How would the a6500 do with the 24-105 g master lens? Would the autofocus be any better?
Probably not much, usually autofocus is dependent on the camera
This was great thanks!
Thank you for the video, could you please compare them on the same bfull frame camera to see how the APS-c preforms and its quality on the FF camera compared to the FE24-105 ?
Looking back, I wish I would have included that. Unfortunately, I threw this video together without planning, at the same time I was selling all my APSC gear. I do appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@camerafusion would you know if the a6500 performs better with the 24-105 lens vs the 18-105 as far as autofocus accuracy? Im wondering if the 24-105 lens is just much better or if the camera body is to blame
I have the Sony a7ii and I was looking into getting the 18-105 but I’m not so sure about how it might look look on a full frame with apsc mode on. And I really can’t shell out $1300 for the 24-105
It will work but the megapixel count takes a big hit. I got lazy on this video and did not swap lenses. However, I did do a video with a 16mm APSC and 24mm Full frame and swapped the lenses. It should be what you’re looking for other than its not the same focal length. Hope this helps. czcams.com/video/uzzWScwxDEU/video.html
UTubeCreatives thanks that cleared a lot up!
so great idol ! how 's a bout Sony APSC vs Full Frame 18-105 vs 24-105 Sony a7iii vs Sony a6500 F4 quality video test ? thanks for your rep
Would love to try that out but unfortunately I just sold all the Sony APSC gear. I can tell you that I used both for video and didn't see a great difference. The a6500 is a great video camera as far as I'm concerned.
I was glad with the comparison but also disapointed that in fact you tested the camera's more than you did the lenses.
I had the 18-105mm on my former A 6300 and I didn't like it to much but I recently bought the A7C and although that is a full frame camera and the 18-105 lens is not, it performs great on the A7C and I'm totally happy with it now, especially from the point of view of quick autofocusing and tracking.
A pity you didn't compare both lenses on your a 7iii.
I agree with you. This video was not planned out and it shows. I was selling all my APSC gear and tried to make a few quick videos before it was gone. Hopefully it's helpful for some but it clearly could have been more thorough.
@@camerafusion No worries ;-) - but you should have kept some APSC gear :-) . .
I use the 18-105 with a6300. No issues with autofocus. Wonder what kind of work are you doing?
@@liceafilms Mainly dog activity.
@@123sette lots of fast movement would probably make autofocus a task in those situations. For my uses (family vlogs and soccer games) it has been a great alternative to handheld camcorders
I don't have the same hunting issues with the 18-105 on my a6500
probably because the closest fuji is TOO close. Few people know that the minimum focusing distance of the 18-105 increases a lot beyond its 80mm focal length
it is more a camera comparison, the autofocus of the alpha 7III is much better than the old one of the 6500, that means you should compare each objective at the same cam
Can you put the 18-105 on the a7iii without having to turn on super 35 mode? I was debating that setup for the extra reach, but not if there’s vignetting
The a7iii automatically switches to APSC with the 18-105 attached. If switched to full-frame you do get heavy vignetting (unusable in this way). Also note that 18-105 drops the mega pixel count from 24 to 10. Thanks so much for watching!
@@camerafusion how 's about mega pixel when i take video footage by 18 105 Apsc on a7iii , is it down 24 to 10 the same take a foto or how much % ? Thanks for rep
People leave likes and comments. Really helpful video. Thanks for that. Going for better one for alpha 7iii
test both on same camera not on different, sometimes APS-C lenses performs well on full frame. Also we don't know what restrictions sony has on APS-C camera. Are you aware that A7iii has Dual gain ISO architecture for better ISO performance. I don't think any current APS-C Sony mirrorless has that, otherwise this camera would also perform better in low light.
Great feedback. Much appreciated!
May I know what's the name of your wooden small rig?
Hi there, I no longer have it but I purchased from smallrigs website and it was an optional accessory for the Sony a6500 cage. Hope that helps.
@@camerafusion Oh. Thanks. Is there any available for a6400?
could you provide raw examples? would be a great help. Thanks
Great suggestion! I need to figure out where to store the files for people to be able to download them. I've sold my a6500 and APSC lenses but I do still have the files. I'll try to get them up soon. I'll let you know when they're available.
the minimum focusing distance (and the closest to a macro result) on the E 18-105 is just a tad under its 80mm focal length, then increases dramatically. The 24-105 FE has a constant minimum focusing distance at all focal lenghts, so the comparison should be done at 80mm f.l. for both. I guess the 18-105 would be somehow "hunting" for the same reason in the footage too: the xt3 could be too close for an over-80mm focal length
No doubt that the 24-105 on a FF is overall better than the 18-105 on an APSC, except for the missing gimbal unbalancing due to its internal zoom action. 18-105 in fact is very good, practical and light for videos on the biggest FF sensors. (And somehow also for photography, although not to the point of beating the 24-105)
This is quality well made content :)
Much appreciated!
I would love to purchase some of your apsc equipment!!! I have money to spend!
Just sold it all 🙁 missing my Sigma 16mm and a6500 already.
It’s not the lens struggling with focus, it’s the camera... try it on an a6400 or 6600 instead
I'd agree with that.
I love my 18-105 and I do not see any reason to pay the extra money on the 24-105
Thanks Juan
My mouth is dripping
Great video, however I don't think you know how to use an APSC camera very well. You should have just used the a7iii for both lenses. This video won't be well received simply because you made the cheaper camera look worse. I know it is worse, but people don't like hear it. A little advice to keep in mind moving forward with your channel. The majority of your viewers will have/buy the cheaper version of whatever you're reviewing.
Thanks for the feedback, yeah, looking back there’s a lot of things I would have done differently. I was selling all of my APSC gear and thought this would be of value to someone. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I agree he should use the same camera for both lenses
cant feel anything spcl.. Please make a clip at out door or eithet with more content..
Agreed! Thanks for the conservative criticism.
Love the video, hated my wallet tho
All the added sound effects in the video are abnoxious
Thanks for letting me know! I’ll do better next time.
