    Thanks to those of you correcting me on the image stabilization in the 24-70 f/2.8. The f/2.8 versions from Nikon, Tamron and Sigma Art do have IS. The two Canon 24-70 f/2.8 doesn't - however, the f/4 version does. My bad ;)

      In this day of mirrorless cameras handling higher ISO so well I don't need a 24-70 2.8 anymore! I now use a Sony 24-105 f4 for nearly all my travel shots and it's awesome. Anyone saying otherwise is full of it

      The Sony 24-70 f2.8 does not have image stabilization, but such an expensive lens would be used on one of the Sony bodies that has IBIS stabilization, so not really an issue. However, the Sony 24-105 is my workhorse lens. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks for this highly informative video Mads! After watching many CZcams videos, I was unsure which zoom to go for and left me mistakenly thinking that an f2.8 lens would be 'better', but your video cleared this up and helped me understand that based on my needs, a 24-105 f4 lens would be perfect (for taking landscape shots) as I can also edit these in Lightroom afterwards. I have just ordered this lens, so thanks again :)

    Absolutely agree. The 24-105 is always on the camera when hiking to a location or touring a city. Love the versatility without changing lenses and the loss of one stop of the 24-70 f/2.8 has never meant a great deal to me. Especially Panos! So literally all of your reasons here really resonate with my photography and approach.
    Funny enough, you dropped this video while I was in the Faroe's, but from the title alone I knew it would be good one! As as you can imagine, the 24-105 was right there with me the whole trip!

    This is your first video that I have watched, I like the pace. Very calming :). I've got a 24-70mm Canon with no IS but I don't miss it. Lovely lens. Its the closest I have to a 'kit lens' so I don't miss the extra focal length either but I have heard people say they miss that 35mm more zoom on the 105mm lens.

    I shot only with prime lenses for the last decade, then “discovered” the creative power of good zoom lenses when I brought a Lumix LX100 with its 24-70 equivalent to the Yucatán. It has been a game-changer for me, and your 5 reasons sums up why perfectly. I have since added a 24-120mm equivalent for my “big” bodies. And a 16-36. And a 70-200. Sigh... But the 24-120 is truly is my “go-to” lens.

    I think I agree with you on this. Out of my lens range my canon 24-105 is by far my best lens optically and has an almost perfect range. Thing is I use a cropped sensor canon 80d so I loose some of the wildness I like but fixing that with a pano a great option. Thanks for the informative video Mads!

  • @brucesmith9144
    @brucesmith9144 Před 4 lety +4

    Great points. I would also add that with today’s DSLR/mirrorless cameras it is easy to adjust ISO to compensate for exposure at f/4 versus f/2.8. But having that extra 35 mm of focal length can’t be added so easily. I like the perspective in the 85-105 mm range for portraits which makes the face look very natural and proportional.

    While everyone must decide what gear works best for them, I agree that the 24-105 is a workhorse. It was my go-to lens for walking around and traveling with one lens for 20 year when I shot Canon (24-105 f/4 L). When I moved to Sony last year, the 24-105 was the first lens I bought. Yes, I use plenty of other lenses when I know what I am going to be shooting and can plan the look I want, or have a pack full of kit to haul around, but I can walk out the door with the 24-105 confident that I will be able to capture a well framed, well exposed shot in almost any situation I am likely to encounter. Of course, if I was going out to shoot sports, this would not be the lens I would take. I have always owned 24-70 f2.8 as well, but I rarely use it. Like you, I find that I miss the extra reach when I am using the 24-70 far more often than I miss the extra stop when using the 24-105. These choices work for me. Your mileage may vary.

    Totally agree with you, I do real estate, architecture, landscapes and wildlife. 12-24/25-105 and 100-400 is top choice. I have also few primes 35/55/85/90 macro for portrait with amazing bokeh

    I own a 18mm 2.8 Zeiss Batis, 35 2.8 Rokinon and a 70-200 F4 G, Before that I had the 24-105 but realized I always went tele or wide. I may pick up a 24-70 someday but I love my kit right now :)

    I would highly and strongly recommend the full version of the composition e-book. Lots of good information and well worth the price. BTW, enjoyed the video, I like the 24-105 f-4, it’s an all around great lens.

    This will be my first lens when I go to Sony selling all my canon gear now for a A7r 3 and a 24-105, 100-400 then one day a 16-35 2.8

    This is the lens that is coupled with my A7iii 95+ percent of the time for the past three years. Being an avid advanced amateur photographer with main interest in landscape photography, I found that the IQ and versatility of this lens is unsurpassed. Thanks for sharing!

    Nice video and tremendous images as always. I had the Sony a mount 24-70/2.8 which was an excellent lens even with the adapter to the full frame Sony a7r3. I have since traded it for the 24-105 and I agree it is a must have. The one stop difference wide open is of no consequence to what I do. It is a great mate to the Sony G master 100-400. I had the 70-200/4 and it was a terrific lens and traded it for the 100-400. Wow, this lens is tack sharp at all apertures and focal lengths. Not too much heavier. I use it it lot for wildflower close-ups at 400mm. The lens has such good close focusing ability that I have not needed extension tubes to get frame filling wildflower close-ups. Cheers, Erik

    My Nikon 24-120 stays on my D850 most of the time...but you're right about this focal range. On my film camera's I use a 28-105mm lens with a close focusing function on the lens, this is also a useful tool in my armoury...great pics by the way in your video...
