My thought exactly. You only interact with stuff that will make YOU lose, or make an opponent win in cEDH, generally. Had there been some politics and deals involved, I could see it maybe happening.

David: cEDH is always about timing. Aethervile puts a creature into play at instant speed. Next time pass the turn and before your next turn mill out someone then on your turn mill out another person. Timing and the stack bud.

Michael was a great include for the show. He's fun, smart, and doesn't waste time. He doesn't even read the cards as he plays them. I wish you all did that. Unless someone asks, is new, or it's an obscure card from the Dana Roach and my era, there is no need to waste time reading it. It is being put on screen for those that need to pause and read it.

As a new commander player (i.e. last 6 months) I'm loving the shows and about to sign up to the Patreon. I'm Australian and we swear like sailors and whatnot, but I have to say David's immaturity and swearing really made this episode a grind to watch.

I get you can in response tap the top and draw them place the top on top of the deck. How does it then get out at instant speed to continue the loop?

one thing with shortcutting the win at the end is that mike could have tried to destroy it with the trigger of the top on the stack so he couldn't respond but sean probably had other ways to win
Elsha is my main Commander deck, so I can't wait to see how this one goes.

I'm sure another comment has mentioned it however, as an FYI Lynch, next time you should hit the Elsha with the pyroblast (it is a blue permenant), with the first sensei's top activation on the stack so Sean has not drawn any cards yet

There are many cedh decks that are not on the database. The database are just the most comon and established decks that are optimized to a point where very few people change the list when playing one of them. There are many decks outside of the database that are either more niche lists or are still being optimized.
That's why on the database there is a brew section with decks that the community tries to optimize and a outdated section with decks that are still powerful but can't keep up with the current meta as well as they used to.

The correct way to stop this combo is in response to tapping the top you pyroblast the lab maniac. The draw effect won't have resolved so he won't be able to draw to an answer.

If David wants to CEDH then he need to Mulligan for a more interactive hand. Also Lynch could have stopped the loop if he timed it correctly. When lab man resolved and Sean tapped to draw the next card Lynch could have blown up the lab man. Also the fact that he said he drew lab man and was casting it, I assumed at first that top was on top of the deck. The casual nature that the loop was presented when asked for it to be played out made timing impossible to determine for interaction.

Maybe david should of held on to the grindstone activation? He could of activated it in response to targeted removal like the swords??

i have that elsha combo in my Ich tekik sakashima golem tribal deck. though i use mystic forge in replace of elsha.
Would he still be able to respond to pyroblast? Im not sure because he has to recast sensei everytime to draw a card unless he had flash for artifacts that im not seeing

Important to note here that if Lynch had blown up Elsha either in response to the ugin being played or waited till after lab man resolved and the top trigger to be on the stack to remove the creature... would have been better plays then casting it as a counterspell when Sean could just continue the combo to find the answer

No. Cards are drawn and milled one at a time with each card on the stack individually. Imagine "mill 6 cards" as 6 copies of "mill a card" on the stack. When the Darksteel Colossus would go to the graveyard, it replaces that effect with a shuffle above the other copies of "mill a card" that are still on the stack. Hope that makes sense.
@@justseewut1tdoo12 Actually not 100% correct. The real answer is that once an effect starts resolving, you finish resolving it. Anything that is triggered by something during that effect will actually trigger after it has finished resolving. So the Brainfreeze says: Mill 6. Once you hit Darksteel Colossus, you do not put that one into the graveyard, as it replaces being put into the graveyard. It would want to be shuffled into the library immediately, but that is not legal until the current effect has finished resolving. Always finish resolving what started resolving.

36:38 So Unfortunately this isn't how this would work either. Teferi's Protection doesn't have the same clause that Angel's grace has where it says "You can't lose the game this turn and your opponents can't win the game this turn."
Teferi's prot just gives you a slew of other protections that mainly guard your life total, but they are entirely defenseless against effects that just state "You win, or your opponents lose."
It also doesn't guard your library, your graveyard, or your hand, mainly just your permanents on the board and your life total.

How did he draw at instant speed. He has the ability to cast from the top of his library but I'm un aware of how he is casting the top at flash speed to repeat the process. He shouldn't have been able to counter.
I normally don't comment about rules mistakes (unless replying to someone else), but since this one is so overwhelmingly common, I figured I should tell you how this works so you know for next time.
Teferi's Protection doesn't cause you, the player, to phase out. Players can't phase out in the first place! This is what Teferi's Protection says: "Until your next turn, your life total can't change, and you have protection from everything. All permanents you control phase out."
That means that, until your next turn, these things happen:
- Nothing can cause your life total to change, regardless of circumstance (e.g., if an effect would cause you to lose life, you don't);
- Nothing can target you, deal damage to you or enchant you;
- All your permanents are phased out and treated as if they didn't exist.
Since you're not gone (your permanents are), things can affect you! For instance, someone can win the game (or cause you to lose the game via an effect) without any issues. Teferi's Protection doesn't do anything about that - you never even _get_ a next turn to see things phasing back in. If someone wins the game while Teferi's Protection's continuous effect is active and your permanents are phased out, they just do, and the game is instantly over.
(There's a few other mistakes, but this one's common enough to warrant being mentioned. While we're at it, you can't use Elsha's ability to recast Sensei's Divining Top while something else is on the stack because the Top doesn't have flash, but he could've just drawn his whole deck first and then cast his spells, so he could've just had the FoW in his hand.)
Elsha doesn't give artifacts flash, true. But she does give all non-creature spells cast from the top of your library flash, which includes Top if it's on top of your library

Coud have stopped the combo responding to the top activation rather than the lab man cast, using the destroy effect of pyroblast.
sean could only have drawn 1 more card with pyroblast on the stack, the top needs to resolve to tap. so he could draw in response and recast but that's where the stack would have ended, assuming that force of will wasn't in his hand already.

I have an Awaken the Blood Avatar deck that pops!!! I was buzzing to see yours in action. Mine focuses on copying the blood avatar token as many times as possible!
Someone correct me if I am wrong but when pyroblast was on the stack targeting lab maniac.. Elsha would have had only been able to draw one card off of the sensei’s top when he went digging for the counter spell due to there being no flash. (He wouldn’t be able to cast the top of the top of his deck) I didn’t think you could respond to something on the stack at sorcery speed regardless if it was your turn or not

The ideas was right but the timing was wrong. In this cases you should pyroblast the labman when sensei's divining top is tapped, that way the combo player has to resolve the stack first before continuing the combo
@IHateYourDeck If I'm reading the loop correctly, in response to the Pyroblast he could not keep drawing cards, as the loop is not instant speed since the Sensei's Top has to be repeatedly cast. There was no way to dig for the Force of Will.
The sensei's Divining Top has flash via Elsha's ability, and the stack is continuously suspended since he can cast the sensei, then once the cast has resolved, he can then use the sensei's ability to draw and put on top on response to the pyroblast still on the stack

I wanna say with the sensei's combo, the best time for interaction is when the top is tapped, ability is activated but top is still on the field. If the blast was used here right after the labman on the field, he couldn't continue drawing. Granted, he would have waited till the deck was empty first before playing the labman.

Sean, you can respond to Lynch's Smothering Tithe trigger and keep doing your Sensei's thing, drawing anything you want, and casting noncreatures from the top of your library, all at instant speed while the Smothering Tithe triggers just stack up.
You sure Painters Servant’s effect is only when it’s out? I thought it’s for the rest of the game
It's like any other card. The effect matters when it's on the field. You aren't gaining an emblem or anything else that signifies you get the effect after it is gone
It's a static effect. Imagine that it's same as "all white creatures get +1/+1"

Sensais top lets u draw a card and put it on top. You can cast it from the top of your deck but not at flash speed. It is just an artifact. He would not have been able to keep drawing cards for a response

I think that Elsha doesn't provide Instant Speed to Artifacts. I might have missed something, but I don't think he should have been able to play Top at Instant Speed and draw all those cards. He wouldn't have had Force.
