Might be important when you are playing with older cards to check their oracle text! Black Vise did have an updated version for its oracle text.
It reads the following
"As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player’s upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4."
Thats rough
Lynch: "Its a tokens deck"
Translation: "This is an infinite mana deck"
And his commander turns the infinite mana into infinite tokens and card draw, so it was not a lie it is a token deck :)
Shout out lynch for keeping the table cool during the game, big ups
Yeah he was definitely the level head here. Wouldn't have to worry about that if people weren't playing busted ship that tried to pop off on turn 3 though. That just isn't fun for anyone. Why do you think Cassius doesn't get invited on any channels except Joe's now?
@@blaze556922 popping off on turn 3 is very fun
just gotta be on the same page
@@blaze556922 speak for yourself, i love cedh
@@blaze556922 To be fair this is Competitive EDH. It's play to win, no holds barred. Just remember, at the end of the day it's just a game.
Wasn’t Lynch floating 4 colourless from the mana drain and had access to 2 blue on his untapped/upkeep?
Nobody tell Joe that Black Vise has errata to target an opponent when you cast it.
I play black vise in a deck (that says target) and so badly wanted the all opponents text to be the correct version! LOL
I am building a Nekusar deck, and this video came across my feed. I got all excited because I own a Black Vise! Then I read the rulings and I saves myself having to search my collection for it. 🤣
He said target he just didn’t play it that way!
@@sayonarajames5165 just play iron maiden instead!
It’s actually not a soft E in Astartes. 9:28. I love warhammer and have tons of the audiobooks. Great game guys lots of fun spells. 🎉
Came to the comment section to say just that 🤣
It was really nice of you guys to invite Eric Weinstein to play with y’all
That gave me a good chuckle.
Who?
lmao
I thought that's who it was in the thumbnail
Hahaha.. Dig him on Rogan.
I’m a simple man I see Nekusar I watch
Man this was soo awesome I love the straight off the bat crazy plays it’s a cool change of pace having that said i wish I could’ve seen Toxrill wipe the lands by making all lands swamps and also 1/1 creatures but I enjoyed this regardless!
Here we go! It’s like payday every other Friday with this show!
This is what i love, watching esper (the clearly superior color triad) suppressing the entire board and winning before turn 5
Esper is even the hero of game 2
At 7:54 : Black Vise was changed to: choose a player, then the following effect. Black Vise only works on 1 enemy. Iron Maiden at 21:55 is a 3 Mana card that does the same effect for every enemy. Maernus Calgar CedH is wild
Initial pronunciation of Astartes was correct! Its As-star-tees (they're from the imperium and so its based off old Italian).
Great episode!
Did they sneak-errata Black Vise or did the whole table confuse if with Mystic Remora? Black Vise says target opponent and the new version even says when it enters the battlefield you should choose an opponent and then the Vise affects only that opponent.
"The Shadow knows." 24:25
Sick reference, Sean. 👍
One of the best episodes, super fun to see both decks pop
I believe Black Vise requires you to choose an opponent as it enters the battlefield, and only that opponent is subject to it’s effect. I just felt it was worth noting because of how impactful it could be to have two Iron Maidens in a deck like Nekusar.
so nice of lynch to let the first game last as long as it did! what a generous host
Great to see 2 of the 4 decks pop off. Although I am sure it was not too fun for the other players.
Lesson of the day: Don't let people's commander resolve. Their deck is usually made to take advantage of their commander ;p LOL
I really appreciate joe speaking russian. I am russuan magic player and i like your channel very much
Lynch, you are my favorite host for anything edh-command zone got NOTHIN on you
Crazy the mono black deck had like 4 ways to win that fast. Even was countered by crazy good counters.
Scheming symmetry in Nashi is so devious, that's brilliant
Damn!!! He starts speaking Russian exactly the moment I thought it would be fun to hear this greeting in Russian!
На здоровье! :)
The Nekusar play stated the black vise correctly that it targets an opponent, but then proceeded to play it as if it affected all players. The oracle text is: As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4. Look at Viseling instead
FYI - Black Vise has a target that is chosen when the vise ETBs. its not all opponents. If you wanted something that affects all opponents that would be something along Viseling or Iron Maiden.
I loved watching this episode. I definitely appreciate that they paused to explain some things to the audience. I started watching because I wanted to see Nekusar do well but it never even got cast! Oh well. The game was fun anyway.
Lynch and his optimism is why I love this channel. 😂
Get to work, noti from IHYD 🎉 perfect way to start the day 💪🏼
Great to see you pop off Lynch haven’t seen you do that in a minute
Thank you for the great show. I wanted to point out on one small mistake which wouldn't change the result of the game (most likely).
There is a big misplay with Black Vise. New versions of the card tells you to choose an opponent as it ETB. Only that player loses life for each card excess of 4 on the upkeep.
This doesn't have impact on the first game but in the second game, since Nashi player was paying life for casting stuff, it would matter.
Jeez, 5 minutes in and OG isochron ends it. Cool to see it pop off. I started mtg arround that era it came out. I really hated those decks too 😂
Mono Black getting some love.
Oracle text for Black Vice:
As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.
So, hate to bring it up, but didn't see it mentioned, Black Vise now says you choose an opponent. It doesn't affect everyone. Had to find that out when fine tuning my friend's Neku deck earlier this year.
Black Vice has you pick an opponent, does work on everyone.
Lynch acts chill then runs the meanest decks
Paper magic with my friends 🙌
I clicked for nekusar, Bummed I didn't get to see it go off But that was still a crazy fun episode
when black vise enters the battlefield you choose an opponent so it should only targets and hurt one player.
Read black vise as "target opponent" but checks each opponent's upkeep for its ability.
Sick games! I love mono black.
Judge! Black vise was incorrectly done the whole time here. It only affects 1 chosen opponent (not targeted). It doesn't affect all opponents.
That’s cedh baby, my only note is that I would run a thassas oracle for that infinite combo if nothing else to make the game end faster and you can move on to game 2.
Love the game play! Just a heads up that black vise was errated to say target one single opponent. Doesn’t cause harm to whole table.
Really like to see a Kaalia of the Vast deck be played
Lynch's wife plays one in one of the first episodes:) look it up
It's my favorite commander deck I've made! Wish I could play it in Brawl on MTGA, but only the worse Kaalia is on arena so far.
not sure if you guys caught this, but the black vise only targets one opponent, it doesn't do it to each opponent. Fantastic games to watch though I love this stuff! keep the cedh coming!
Joe seems like such a nice guy. Great people in this episode. Love IHYD
Black vise was misplayed the first game. The rules read: As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent. At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4. Only 1 opponent can get pinged for cards excess of 4.
I love the attitude and comradery, Lynch. You rock, man.
Black Vise Oracletext:
As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.
" My reading voice helps me articulate and sound better" proceeds to pronounce chrome mox chrome max 😂😂 i spit my drink for real lmao
And these games were great to watch! Such a fun episode
Black Vise doesn't affect all opponents. You choose a target as it enters the battlefield and it only checks the number of cards in that player's hand.
Me, a week ago: "hey, I just discovered nekusar, I should make a deck with him!"
You guys: "here's a nekusar deck!"
GET OUT OF MY WALLS! GET OUT OF MY WALLS! GET OUT OF MY WALLS! GET OUT OF MY WALLS! GET OUT OF MY WALLS! GET OUT OF MY WALLS!
Literally me. I found the card yesterday, started building today, and BOOM! Have a video!
Black vise only works on target opponent.
At 7:47 when he plays black vice there is a rule error, he is supposed to choose a player not each opponent. “You choose one opposing player as it enters the battlefield and it only affects that one player. This choice is not changed even if Black Vise changes controllers. It becomes useless but stays on the battlefield if that player leaves the game.”
I just want to say how great these games are and how great you guys all are at keeping this fun and relaxed competitive but no one is salty. I just got back into magic after 10 year hiatus and I have binged through this entire series over the last two weeks. Keep up the good work cant wait to finish the series
I’m only at the intro but Joe is legit 😅
So when black vise enters, you have to choose a player it effects right? So it would only trigger on that players turn right? Not for each opponent...
Not a big deal, but Black Vise only affects one opponent. The Oracle text clarifies this.
I didn't know you could play commander with three people. Knowledge is power
I like how the entire comment section was about the black vise lol. Woulda loved to see the Nekusar pop off ngl
there is an ober abundance use of spice.. only came for vayran ideas but it would seem i have to yet come up with a brand new way to abuse copying spells ans self curse my self and using ojer axonil to fling x dmg per cast and copy.
I have that same mana crypt proxy
Game 1 fun and interactive :/
Game 2 monoblack rulez!!
Impressive especially since it was a 1 lander and it paid off
Never punished
Black Vise doesn't affect everyone. It only affects one player. The oracle text begins with "As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent."
Additionally, the rules and info for the card state:
"You choose one opposing player as it enters the battlefield and it only affects that one player. This choice is not changed even if Black Vise changes controllers. It becomes useless but stays on the battlefield if that player leaves the game."
Joe should know how his card works, especially if he going to lengths to explain it (in both games) how it works. I wonder if he does know how it works but opted to not tell the truth about it.
Black vise is only target opponent. You have to choose an opponent as it ETBs
What life counter app are you using I love how you can put the commander damage next to your actually damage for quick reference
black vise was played wrong
oracle text:
As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.
the "e" at the end of Astartes in Warhammer isn't soft, the way Lynch said it originally is correct
I have a very similar Nekusar deck and it can really pop off, Unfortunately, it did not shine as much as the other decks here but still very cool games. Also, have to point out that black vise is not the same as iron maiden; it had an errata to affect only one opponent chosen when black vise is played. I doubt it would've really changed the games' outcome.
Black Vice has been errata in multi-player. It has to only target 1 player. Not all your opponents.
When you cast black vise you have to target an opponent and it only applies to them. Unless they errata'd it or whatever.
I would have pact too , gave the table a chance. Bad bids for nek and veyran.
Sorry if this has been asked before, but what kind of dice are they using. The red numerical 6 sides dice with circles? Haven't seen them before.
Black vice doesnt work that way, its been changed so you choose an opponent on ETB, but it looks like it didn't really matter in the end lol
Unfortunately, Black Vise was played wrong in both games. The gatherer text has you choose an opponent when the vise comes in, and it only affects that player.
Feels like Lynch should've went full send on the first game down into labman/thoracle 😋
Just so you know, Black Vise has you choose one opponent, and it only affects that opponent. (Read the Oracle text!) That's why it costs {1} while Iron Maiden costs {3}.
Not that it would've made any difference here...
(By the way, people at a CEDH table would definitely be mad at you for casting a Pact of Negation you'll certainly lose to, but hey, this is ultimately more of a casual table and it was a fun move!)
EDIT: btw, someone tell Sean that it was a nice attempt at an intro in Spanish! A couple of minor grammar mistakes and clearly a non-native, but it was completely understandable. (Source: I'm a native speaker.)
Just a FYI as a Nekusar player thats not how Black Vise works
Effect of card: As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.
dunno i just feel you should know the card lol didnt effect the game just dont want people to be confused :)
Cool games! Shame that Joe had the rules for Black Vise wrong though. You only affect one chosen opponent with that, not each.
Did they change the implementation of black vise in the gatherer? I thought it was a target opponent that you have to chose when it enters the battlefield?
Not sure if there was a pre-rule group-ruling, but Black Vise doesn't work that way. Upon entering the battlefield an opponent is chosen (not targeted), and only that opponent is affected by the Black Vise.
Black Vise works different. You habe to choose a player as it enters the battlefield. Only that player loses Life, the other players are not affected
Realistically, it seems like lynch was hamming it up with the dramatic scepter combo. If hes playing all the cedh staples in esper, just draw your deck, thoracle and go to the next game.
Also lynch heard cedh and brought actual cedh level stuff while the other guys seemed to have brought decks that would be at the much higher end of casual still. Glad everyone had a good time but that often leads players to having a more negative experience (when people arent on the same page about power levels, the “everything is a power level 7” argument lol)
hey lynch, i did not find a decklist and it did not happen during the matches, but i was asking myself how joe planned to give nekusar infect. like with which card it is possible in these colors? cheers, malu
You pick one opponent when black vise comes into play and it only affects them.
One thing about the Black Vise, when it enters the BF you actually choose one opponent and that Vise only affects that one player, not each of your opponents.
black vise was played wrong it only affects one opponent here's the current oracle text
Card Name: Black Vise
Mana Cost: 1
Converted Mana Cost: 1
Types: Artifact
Card Text:
As Black Vise enters the battlefield, choose an opponent.
At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, Black Vise deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of cards in their hand minus 4.
have to select an opponent with black vice, it doesnt affect everyone. Iron Maiden affects everyone, that is the difference.
Black Vise and Iron Maiden are very similar but are actually different. Iron Maiden triggers during EACH opponents upkeep, while Black Vise is only on TARGET opponent’s upkeep. When Black Vise etbs you choose a single opponent. It doesn’t trigger on each opponent like Iron Maiden does. Not a huge deal though. Love the content
I was under the impression that Black Vise only effects one opponent
Black Vise was Errataed to only effect a single opponent
Black Vise only works on one opponent. It was re-errata to choose an opponent as it enters. Viseling works on all opponents.
Black vise was played wrong. The oracle text says when it comes in to play choose a opponent. That person takes the damage. Not every player
Mono blue Urza is the answer lynch … 39:30 ^^
7:57 black vise only works on one opponent, not each opponent.
1st game looked like torture
I'm sure someone has said it already but black vise only targets one player
