      Normally driving instructors have duplicate controls on their side of the car, but if you're using your own car you won't have those so you have to learn your options: you can grab the steering wheel, pull the parking brake, put car into neutral or park. People think that being a "good driver" is about who has the right of way or the other person being "at fault" after an accident. They couldn't be more wrong. Being a good driver is ALL about avoiding the collision in the first place. If you gotta slow down to let someone merge who is obviously coming over regardless, or if you gotta eat a little crow and say, "my bad" in order to de-escalate a road-rage incident caused by someone else, THAT is what makes a good driver. A good driver is someone who does what must be done in order to avoid the accident, regardless of any other factors.

      Some of these videos are great for defensive driving training. Pause the video a few seconds before the crash and ask yourself what could be going wrong here? Situational awareness. Do this enough and you start to instinctively drive more defensively, backing off a bit to minimize your exposure. I had a lot of this training decades ago as a job requirement and it's stuck with me. I drive so carefully now that no one can stand to be in the car with me. Some of the aggressive drivers in these videos act as if having the right-of-way will magically protect them; I'm not willing to give bad/distracted drivers that much power over my life.

Keep the car straight left signal on only creep out just pass the crosswalk no farther and wait for your gap. Plus yield arrows mean wait and yield not go when there’s traffic coming.

    • @fortunesoulx
      @fortunesoulx Před 18 dny +3

      It drives me INSANE seeing people pull into an intersection to wait to take their left turn. Far too often it happens that traffic is heavier than expected and the light turns red while they're there so they have to rush to get out of the way. Idgaf if anyone gets mad, I'm not taking my turn or getting in the intersection until I can definitively see that I can safely clear it. If that means I have to wait for another cycle of the traffic lights, then so be it. I also have zero problems waiting to go when I could have made it. I'd rather say "aw man I couldve gone" than "oh shit I should've waited" and cause an accident.

Yes, the SUV should've started stopping earlier because the car hesitated, but the student driver hesitated so much that there was no possible way to read what they were about to do, and you can literally see the SUV move over before even entering the intersection to potentially avoid the person stopped in the middle of an intersection in the way of oncoming traffic.Had the student driver just stayed put even after already pulling in front of the SUV, the SUV would've maneuvered around them. You're also overestimating how quickly a car can stop when going moderately high speeds. It would also be extremely dangerous for the SUV to stop dead in its tracks and slam on the brakes at a green light, because traffic behind him would not expect it, and he'd likely be rearended. You can make the argument that the SUV should've known there was nobody behind him but in emergencies your brain fills in the blanks.

    #23 I recognize you were a new driver in the clip so in real life the situation may have looked different to you but I hope when you looked back at the video you can see how fast the car was going and why it wasn't safe to turn. If you had waited a few seconds, the car would have cleared the intersection and you could have gone safely.
    The driver definitely had time to slow down and let you go through but it is never safe to assume that another driver is going to do the right thing. (And I don't mean legally right for any of ROW folks out there.) You can see that the driver does not slow down, (and I think they switch to the other lane to continue trying to go through.) That was another indication that you should have stopped.
    It sucks to go through that, especially when you're starting to drive.
