All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios with this caliber.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.

Great review Mason. I've personally found that the S+B SPCE to be very accurate. I used this same ammo only in 308 with the 150gr SPCE projectile on a boar in Queensland and it smacked it to the ground without a problem. Thanks for sharing!

I had some of those SB loads in 300 Win Mag, they cut a nice hole in paper but I didn't consider using them to hunt since I had some other ammo for that. Didn't wanna use what I considered a pinking load since I didn't know anything about them or what they were capable of. Thanks for testing them Mason!

Thanks so much for these ballistic test videos! They are some of the most consistent and informative available on factory-load performance. I was especially interested in this one because I was planning to use S&B's 173 grain SPCE in 7x57 Mauser on black bear this fall. The results with the 30-06 150gr left me with visions of a really pissed off bear! That's too bad because S&B are about the most widely available and cheapest factory ammo for 7x57 in the US.
I'll second the request by and earlier commenter that you consider testing the same bullet at 180 gr SPCE from S&B, with an advertised MV of 2641 fps. It would make a great head-to-head comparison to your test of the Federal Power-Shok 180 gr 30-06. I wonder if ore mass and less MV might improve the SPCE's terminal performance?
Thanks for your review on a european bullet! This bullet is very common to use in europe. Just the 30-06 seems very hard hitting for a soft point bullet. I'm shooting it with my Drilling in 7x65R (also a common caliber) with a 180 grain bullet and it doesn't explode like this. Even though we're converting into lead-free ammo now, I will be shooting this round, because the precision and performance on our little roe deer (and huge wild boar) is amazing.
I'd love to see some sort of "special" on european standard calibers (6,5x54MS, 6,5x55, 7x64, 7x65R, 8x57IS, 9,3x74 etc) from you, because you always seem to make a fair review. Most others seem to be paid by ammo manufacturers so its just one big advert...
A test I wanted to see! I would also like to see the 180gr SPCE, as I prefer the heavies.
I have heard the SPCE act similarly to SSTs just without the higher b.c., I would be using them mainly on hogs at sub 200 yard ranges - so b.c. is not a huge factor.
The "cutting edge" is supposed to make a nice entry wound for better blood trails.

I've used the S&B "Cut Through Edge" soft points for 30 years. Had good luck on deer with their 303 & 8mm Mauser (Their 8X57 is loaded to CIP standards. The 8mm Mauser loaded to lower SAAMI standards).
It's very soft lead that immediately expands. The edge in the jacket being the only thing holding the jacket to the core. It's a good antelope & deer bullet.

The 8x57 S&B load with the 196 grain SPCE bullet produces 2580 fps from my Husqvarna 640.

At those velocities fragments coming off can actually cause some nasty wounding (albeit at the expense of penetration). One of those in the boiler room would very likely bring a deer down sooner than Fusion or other high weight retention bullets would.
I'm thinking the same, this ammo is used a lot for wild boars in Europe and it worked allways great...

My '06 stacks these on top of each other at 100 yds. Deer and small pigs drop quick. For larger game I use 165 Accubond.

But honestly given the performance of Federal blue box power shok for close to the same price, I'll buy American.

Not too bad. I have this type of bullet in 7mm Rem Mag which shot okay on paper but I’ve never used it on game. Given this video I think I’ll stick with my 160gr TSX in Fed Prem. It’s performed wonderfully on elk so far for me and it shoots .90” on 5 shot group with a cooled barrel.
What velocity are you getting on your 7mm?
TSX is tough to beat in any caliber
I'd use it for whitetail size stuff but yeah, there is definitely better out there. 👍👍

I haven’t fired any S&B in rifles but the handgun rounds functioned and were fairly accurate. Have you tried the Academy brand ( Monarch,I think)
I’ve used Monarch years ago, not recently, most if not all of it is Prvi Partizan (PPU), I’ll be doing PPU at some point

I don’t like the inconsistency in expansion and penetration but like the price and velocity. Would probably be great for smaller deer and varmint like coyote

I may of missed this comment. The SPCE is a target bullet for S&B. It’s designed to “cut” clean on targets. I have used this bullet in a 7mm,8mm and a 30-06. Performed well up to whitetail and comparable game. Absolutely a target bullet though
It is marketed as hunting ammunition, not target ammunition, this is verbatim from their website: “The cut-through edge locks the jacket and lead core together, while also producing a clean entrance wound and distinct, easy to follow blood trails. Appropriate for light to medium game.”

The price is good and IMO the brass is great if that's all you see. Disclaimer lol: I love the heavier SPCEs in 7x57 and 8x57, and hunt with them vs my own (unneeded) reloads. Cheers.
Not a first choice for hunting deer. May be good on coyote or hogs. If it is decent accuracy that would factor in also. Appreciate the good consistent content. It is really quite helpful.
It works on wild boars in Europe, so it must work on feral hogs too. For roe deer works also very nice, but roe deers are smaller than a whitetail deers, maybe that makes some difference..

Hogs are much tougher than deer. If it works on hogs, it's a slam dunk for deer.
@@doylethorn9251 I have not had the privilege of hog hunting. I have hunted and harvested more deer myself and all of my children than can be counted over 3 decades. Deer are surprisingly resilient. Some drop in their tracks while others take a solid hit and hang in there for a very good time and distance. Thank you for perspective. Happy hunting.

Any 150 gr bullet that is not bonded is going to have a tough time at 2900+fps the speed explains is explosiveness however ive used these in 7x57 at 2670fps and it smashes moose exits 85-90% of the time every bullet recovered was in 1 piece and yes 50% retention is about average but it is more than exeptable on moose at 2970fps... neck/heart/lungs it literal perfection but one cant ask a non bonded sp to shash both shoulders.... n if you are shooting both shoulders put the rifle dont your wasting meat

Those look like they’d give a whitetail a hard time. 150gr at 2900fps out of a 22in barrel is pretty stout load lol no wonder that bullet broke apart
