30-06 North Fork 165 & 180gr Bonded Spitzers Ballistics Gel Ammo Test

- Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the North Fork Bullets 165 and 180 grain Semi Spitzer Bonded Soft Point .308 caliber bullets loaded into 30-06 Springfield cartridges fired from a Tikka T3X Superlite Stainless with 22.4 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios with this caliber.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.

You need to try federal trophy bonded. They are constructed about the same as the north fork. The fusion is designed to expand more. Would like to see how the trophy bonded performs.

I can confirm. These bullets absolutely work. I’ve used them for moose the last few seasons. Also you can hit a big shoulder bone with it and still retain 80% or so. Pretty incredible

I love how they bond bullets. They come off the line like any other cup & core projectile, then spend a second in an induction coil. Heats up the bullet, bonding the lead with the jacket. For that extra second of manufacturing time, they double the price of the bullet.
Great way to increase margin and performance
As a reloading enthusiast I enjoyed seeing you test not only the North Fork bullets but also the consistancy of reloads. Many reloaders drop powder without weighing. I'm slow and weigh each powder charge out of habit not because I'm some kind of perfectionist. But, I've developed a disllike for most factory ammo. I love to roll my own because I know what I'm getting.
Glad to be of service! I used an RCBS ChargeMaster Lite for these, seems pretty accurate based on the tight spread of these loads, I matched them to 1/10th of a grain.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Yes. 1/10th of grain is about as close as one can get. Trying to get to 1/100th of of grain would drive a reloader nuts. And, I don't know of any digital scale that will measure that accurately. I calibrate my Lee Powder measure as close to my target powder drop measue as possible and then weigh the charge on my Hornady digital scale. I usually have to add 1 or 2 10ths from my dribbler to get it right. Your ChargeMaster is going to get it right every time. I know when it gets close it slows and then dribbles the last few 10ths. I may get a ChargeMaster and simplify my powder measuring. Thank you for your posts. They're always interesting, consistant and always fair.

The ruger only has hornday loads available and they are kinda wonky on BIG game , which means dangerous for Cape buffalo, and since swift has slacked on making.375 AFram. these or Barnes TSX are about the only reliable bullets around now

Great big game bullets for sure..In the photo with the cut bullet they appear to be made like the Federal Terminal Ascent bullet, which came from the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw originally..Instead of a full lead core like the Fusion, hence the bigger expansion and less penetration..it has that smaller bonded lead core and solid copper base combo which has proven to be a great bullet design for good expansion and deep penetration just like these did..Just minus the tips and boattails put on the TA's..Good stuff!

Northforks are great bullets for bigger than deer critters, I've used them on a few elk and moose, I've used the 180 and 200 in 30 cal, 30-06 and 300 win mag, 225 and 250 338 cal in my 340 weatherby, they work

Fantastic bullet. Federal Fusion also a fantastic bullet. You should compare both to Hornady ELD-X so that people can see that both Federal Fusion and North Fork are streets ahead of ELD-X.

Greater expansion in the Fusion would explain the reduction in penetration. I load a LOT of Fusions in multiple calibers, but they are becoming more difficult to find. The North Forks are about twice the price, but glad to have another source for quality bonded bullets.

These loads probably can be improved for velocity. If they were grouping good for you, they certainly are adequate loads since they are already running in the same range as factory performance anyway.
There’s quite a bit of room left before max charge
Velocity was on the conservative side, left about 200 fps on the table. Doesn't matter though, these guys did just fine at the lower velocities. Great test. Expensive pills, but they seem to work well.

I shoot a load in my 3006 that is gospel for the Hodgdon loading manual i love it!! its 55.5 grs H414 with 180 gr Sierra gameking with standard CCI primer its if i remember 2900 and change fps and im covering about 3/4 of an inch at 100 yards, would love to see it in a gell test hint hint😂

Excellent video! Could you please test the 180 grain Winchester Power Max Bonded in 30-06? I'm curious how they compare to Federal Fusion. I've used them for years in 30-30 and they are awesome on deer but unfortunately have been discontinued in 30-30.

Im hoping to give these a try for hunting with my rem 700 in a wildcatted 318 WR (using 338 instead of 330). Especially knowing i can find these much easier than a partition
The 180s seem to shock and hit the gel harder. I'd use either one of thos loads for whitetail or moose!

Speer BTSP 165 and 180 grain in 30 cal are wonderful bullets. Cheap on the wallet, and reliable results I think you’d enjoy them and the Hot cor line of bullets
I"m a Hot Cor fan for 165 gr .308's and 180 gr. .358 for my .35 Rem. I load the .35 Rem pretty hot for a lever gun and the Hot Cors hold up extremely well. I wish I could find appropriate bullets for my .444 Marlin in 240 grain. Pistol bullets are plentiful but won't hold up at my load speeds of over 2200 fps. And, I can't find 265 grain bullets except those that come in factory loaded ammo.

@@TODinWY I have. You have to email them since they don't have a website. They no longer make a rifle bullet for the .444 and they no longer make the 180 grain FN for the .35 Remington.
I love the results of these, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to switch from the federal fusion. Especially the 130 grain loading in the 270 win.
