- Let's do a ballistics gel test and review of the North Fork Bullets 350 grain Flat Point Bonded and Cup Point Solid .458 caliber bullets loaded into 45-70 cartridges fired from a Marlin 1895 Trapper lever action rifle chambered in 45-70 Government with 16 inch barrel.

All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios with this caliber.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional. - Zábava

Keep the handloads comin'!!
I will as I can! I enjoy it
Impressive! These are good for any big game in America even dangerous game. Thank you for giving these some exposure. I appreciate the handloading option & vids. They seemed plenty accurate as well.
Man, im very impressed by the north fork offerings so far. What a fantastic bullet design.
Thanks for all the awesome videos
Thanks for your support!
Great content as always!
Glad to be of service!
Too bad you cant get the speer 400gr anymore. Recoil wasn't bad at around 1900fps. Penetration & expansion was good. Northfork looks like they make quality bullets. Always enjoy your videos. Good work!
Thanks for the video, it's great. I love carbine length rifles, even with up to a 20" barrel. Honestly though, I'm very much a fan of a 45-70 with a 22" barrel, it really picks up a lot of speed. I'd love shooting those CPS bullets about 2300+ fps in my next 45-70 rifle having a 22" barrel. My go-to bullets have usually been 405 gr. hard cast lead bullets and the Xtreme Penetrators from Lehigh and Underwood. Hopefully Wilson will keep those going! Thanks again.
Glad to be of service! I do plan to load these to the gills in the future, very curious about the cup points
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather right on! I'm looking forward to it.
Great video
Thanks for your support!
Great test, if you look at the bearing service of both they seem very similar. That should help when working up loads.
Absolutely
Cool video 👍
Glad to be of service!
Great Test as always!
Are you planning on testing the Hornady Superformance SST in 6.5 soon?
Glad to be of service! I did that load last year, it’s on my channel
Would love to see some 9.3x62 tests. Especially with the northfork 286 ss.
… the Barnes reloading manual would probably give you a good basis for conjecture of starting loads for mono metal bullets
The 350SS works super in my 458 at 2500fps.
Have also loaded the 350cps to the same speed. Will be interesting to see the effect on game.
Outstanding
1900 fps is impressive for a 350gr out of a 16" bbl and penetration and expansion are optimal. I would like to load these for my 18" bbl 1895gs guide gun. I'm going to look into 35 caliber offerings to load for my 35 Whelen also.
Flat Point: 2,868 foot pounds of energy.. I believe this would work on Elk or Moose, esp. considering the penetration. Keeping in mind the range limitations of a bullet with this ballistic coefficient.
Seems like you could up your powder to near your other load to get the velocity up on the cup solids
Those bullets did pretty decent as loaded. And you probably have a little room to speed them up. Big bores are forgiving inasmuch that they work well at fairly moderate speeds.
If you can, it'd be interesting to see solid bullets in all the calibers like fmj 556, fmj 3030 so we have a base to compare with. Also, pls add a 357 lever gun thanks for the best videos
You might try contacting north fork to see if they could help you get some load data for those cps bullets
😎🎸🎶✨️🎈 45-70 Baby! 🎉
"I didn't load the cut point solids superpowerfly" proceeds to hit 40 inches. Jesus
Hi would you recommend a 30-06 vs a 300 win mag for whitetail deer within 150 yards and which would leave a bigger more effective wound cavity
I wonder if the CPS is designed for other .458 caliber rifle velocities, if it's optimized for .458 Lott you were really low on the velocity scale.
Leverguns50 did a video with the flat points loaded to 2100 fps. Worth a watch.
Probably about like getting kicked by a mule
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather he also loaded them in a 45-90 at 2300 fps I think.
I have no doubt you can break the 2000 fps mark too! Or your collar bone along with it lol. My experience with my guide gun is that it can take much more pressure with hot 45/70 than I can lol. I have found keeping my 300 gr. JHP handloads in the 1800fps range out of my 18" barrel gives me good performance on deer and black bear. I have a bear load worked up with 405gr hard cast if I ever get the chance to go out west and find a grizz. But the company shpuld really provide load data dpr thier bullets if its not readily available in manuals. Im sure they did yhier own testing of thier product. Juat including the load data on the box when they ship the bullets would not be that hard.
For the price it should be top tier 😊
If I had to guess, those cup points would preform well loaded nice and hot
Absolutely
Great video how was it accuracy
Thanks for your support! Good enough to hit the blocks, I don’t “group test” when I film ballistics gel tests. The biggest variable by far is the person shooting,
Its ok to share load data. CZcams just doesn’t like it if you show from start to finish. Every step. For some reason. But you can show tips and tricks..
I understand, I’m not for more reasons than YT guidelines
Lucas McCain's bullets .
North Fork has the CZcamsr loop complete which is smart on their part. I think you would give a bad review if the product is subpar
what vel would you expect from a22 inch bar????,more complete burn,,WHAT do think????
45-70 isn’t a barrel-length sensitive cartridge, you’d get a little more speed but not a ton
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather thanks for the comment,,my marlin is 22 1980,is when a brought the rifle in,denver
❤️🔥🤙🏻😎🇺🇸
Glad to be of service!
Odd that North Fork does not supply load data
That’s my biggest criticism, especially with the more unique bullet types they manufacture.
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather Have you tried Oregon Trail hardcast? I just loaded some .44 mag 310gn they worked great. I have some .410 gn 45-70 sitting on the shelf from them waiting for me to get motivated
@@masonoutdoors_masonleather they have load data, not easy to find , I have the 45-70 load data they sent me , if you would like me to email it you
Those FP bullet loads would make dandy timber elk rounds.
Absolutely
Try some Buffalo Bore 350-grain Barnes ammo out of your gun. EXPENSIVE, but it would be very informative.
I may eventually
