All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballi... that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7’ from the shooting bench.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 7’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.

Proof positive that this kind of ammo reviews are needed. You cant just rely on a Company name anymore. I would never expect this good of ammo from S&B!

Agreed! It’s a brand that I wasn’t overly familiar with, so I never bought it for any of my rifles, even though it’s on the lower end of the price scale. Thanks for the review! I’ll be comparing this to the Hornady LeverEvolution that I typically hunt with.
-just went back and checked your specs on the 160gr LeverEvolution. I’ll probably stick with the LeverEvolution, just because although they’re about 350fps slower average, they’re 2.4X expansion and 1.5-2” average deeper penetration keeps them a touch better (to me)- and my rifle likes them and is sighted in for them already.
This is still a VERY close comparison though; I wonder how the BC would compare out at 200 yards……

Back in the mid 1970's, my dad decided to replace his Remington 725 bolt action in .270 with a Winchester 94 in .30-30. Along with the gun he picked up a couple of boxes of Federal 150 gr. "Hi-Shok" ammo (the old red and black boxes).
He ended up taking a few deer with that gun and ammo over the next 20 or so years.
Every one of those bullets that he could recover opened up to some point in the 60 caliber range.
Amazing mushrooms, considering the small Blacktail deer we have around here.
Those old Federal rounds could really knock 'em down.
I'll have to keep an eye out for the Sellier & Bellot ammo, though. Sounds like those are a winner, too.

I hope you get the chance to test Barnes TTSX 150 and 180 grain in 30-06. The 150 is listed at 3000fps which is one of the hottest factory listed speeds I think for 30-06. If the LGS doesn’t have them check Dunhams, the always got it in bulk.
Had the Nosler snail the other day, now the Sellier and Bellot greyhound. Very good performance, I know which one I would choose.

Pressures produce velocity. That's how it works, a direct effect on bullet movement.
You can achieve that more than one analogue way. You can achieve greater velocity without ever going over peak pressure, by raising the AVERAGE pressure of when the powder starts burning to when it finishes burning (certain specialty boutique ammo companies often do this, getting higher performance without increased PEAK pressures). You can also achieve greater velocity another way, by raising peak pressures higher than previously (the dangerous route), without doing anything about burn duration. That's the differences between fast-burn and slow-burn powders. Of course that is rather simplistic and a ton of other factors come into this, but in general that's an easy way to look at it.

Knox your sox off is right. That stuff is gettin' it. Back in the old days Winchester once billed 150s at 2410 FPS. Look at an old yellow box from the 60s sometime.
Would love to see a PPU 30-30 test, on AmmoSeek it’s pretty consistently the cheapest 30-30 available with a 170 grain bullet.

@@masonoutdoors_masonleather these modern 30-30 bullets are quite amazing. Not that this bullet is really modern but this bullet, the hammer down, and the 190 grain (cannot remember the brand) all have been very impressive!
I've been using S&B ammo in my 357mag leaver carbine , very nice groups.....also took a small bull moose with S&B 270win soft point with excellent results, moose is in the freezer. The primer was flattened out, due to warm temperatures.....I think they may be using faster burning powders.... The pressures were high..... They will work good in cold weather.....thanks for the video.....
During the pandemic this was the only stuff on shelves. Thinking it would just be some plinking rounds to have I’m glad I bought some. Haven’t shot any of it yet but gonna see how it groups tomorrow definitely.

that velocity in a 24" barrel might really surprise you. I would venture appx low 2500s. Pull a bullet and weigh the powder against another brand. Very interesting. Discovered some Hammer Down 150gr 30-30 at our local wally world today ($27.40/bx).

The old Hornady used to be the same but I haven't seen it on the shelf for the old thirty wcf since the late seventies in my area and don't remember what there bullet was called but I found it good ammo back in the day and before anyone gets long winded this was factory ammo back in the day I survived six tours in the Marine corps in country Vietnam people's republic of mostly in the Highlands but I love the old thirty WCF and I still have over a dozen to this day
So much the so called 0k to 100yd 30- 30 . Ive reload this caliber and tested 30-30 over 300yards .the old so called 100 yarder with good ammo and for me a scope , practice, practice, practice shots during hunting season rifleman can take deer sized game 250 300 yards. im not a armchair expert .i have shot these with great success in 44years of reloading . like Elmer Keith, hell i was there.lol.papa wishing you well. 😊

I’m toying with the idea of a knock around rifle using the new Rossi R95 Trapper. I was thinking about using the Hornady but this might be the better way to go.

Im not sure how to pronounce their name but i can tell you that they are based out of the Czech Republic and have been since 1825
SnB puts out quality ammo unlike some American ammo thats put out to the public with no real research and fails miserably. Their .22 mag hollow point ammo is absolutely devastating on varmints.
Sam Fadala wrote about .30-30 many years ago. His premise was that .30-30 would deliver the goods on game with 170s better than 150s with his handloads. In a tight rifle, with good brass, and 748 powder he had 170s moving right along 30+ years ago. Now we have Hodgdon's LeveRevolution powder. .30-30 can be pretty zippy safely as long as you are paying attention to the details. But you gotta pay attention to of all the details.
Longer burn duration with less peak pressure will get it done.
Finally, been awhile since you made a good video.
Might be some changes, but my learning said those velocity numbers were usually taken from a 26 inch barrel. Expectations from a 20 inch barrel should be 50 fps per inch shorter. 6 x 50 = 300. Expectations from a 20 inch barrel should be 2000 to 2100 fps (American made ammo). With that in mind, the S&B ammo is even better. (Maybe they use actual rifles with actual 20 inch barrels?????).
Most ammo loaded for old cartridges like the 30-30 (128 yrs!) is not loaded to the max safe pressure in the USA because of all the old rifles out there that may be in well worn condition (read: fear of lawsuit). This stuff probably is. Euro ammo is known to be loaded to higher performance levels in older rounds.
There are relatively new powders that outperform classic .30-30 powders (like 3031). CFE 233 and LeveRevolution push bullets 150-200 fps faster. That is significant.
Have you tested it for accuracy at 100 yds. Either just for your knowledge to to share in the future. Speed doesn't kill if you can't hit it, just curious.
.30-30 Ammo is supposed to be rated out of a rifle length barrel (24").
If it's hitting rated velocity out of a carbine (20") it's smoking.
I'm not sure anyone even sells a rifle anymore. The last new one I saw was a USRAC Commerative Model.

Mason you gotta start measuring the area of the bullet, not the linear diameter at the widest point. 60 caliber is more than double the frontal area of 30 cal. You should at least do an average expanded diameter - so if one petal sticks out at 65 and the narrowest part of the mushroom is 55, it should be scored as 60 cal expansion. Or like I mentioned above you should just do the frontal area in square inches. Love the videos! I am getting some leather for my dad's 1892 from your store for his Christmas present.

I understand what you mean and agree, but I don’t have time for that, that’s why I show the bullets and mention when the expansion is particularly uniform or when it’s particularly not, I can’t cover absolutely everything, by showing the bullets I’d really hope people can infer when one is better than another, and if not oh well, i have to call it at some point or I’d also need to calculate rotation velocity, energy at impact, etc, etc, you could just keep going with all kinds of stuff
What kind of a group can you get with us 100 yards
This Czech maker is well known for extremely hot loaded cartridges. The .303 British load is considered unsafe for any Lee Enfield. Inspect your locking block and the area of your bolt where it engages. With extended use you may very well start to suffer headspace issues.
Or, they fixed the super loaded issues and it is okay-I doubt that.
Their 10mm are loaded light and closer to .40SW.

S&B is european, so If could be loaded to C.I.P. standard, in the case of the 30-30 it is 3200 bar vs. the SAAMI 2900 bar.

Almost all European made cartridges are loaded hot. They don't have the liability that American manufacturers face because of lawsuits.

Probably about 100 FPS faster for 4-6 inch longer barrels. I'm guessing 20 FPS per inch.
Buffalo Bore makes a 190 gr. Load with some boogie behind it. Check it out.
