And you can't _not_ like a lever rifle, so when you combine the two you have a rifle everyone should own, my Marlin 30-30 is one of my most cherished rifles. Within 100 yards, all day long. Beyond that, the velocity drops down so low the bullet does what this 350 loading is doing, barely mushrooms out and just makes a 35 caliber hole. With a good loading the 350 is capable of good expansion and wound cavitation out too 200 yards and can be shot further but the terminal performance drops off. I've used both, the 35 was an awesome caliber and loved shooting it out of my 81 Remington Woods master, but now days 35 is harder to find and expensive where the 350 isn't. Then again, who am I kidding, everything seems difficult and expensive compared to a few years ago 🤷

There's nothing wrong with the overal design of the 350 Legend cartridge. The bullet designers need to spend more time designing bullets that provide the best ballance between penetration and expansion. I just watched a video where a guy had all copper 140 gr bullets loaded to over 2300 fps. This may be a good path for finding that ballance

Good thing with 350 Legend is that, because it's a 35 caliber, you can experiment with heavy revolver bullets in .357 or .358 caliber. I'd reckon a lead round nose or semi-jacketed-flat-point would do great in certain situations, if you do a little experimentation with the loads. Presuming you're a reloader of course.

For the .350 Legend to be (originally) compared to the 30/30, in ballistics. It seems to have a lot more penetration, and foot pounds of force. I think a line of water jugs may be needed to catch these bullets, next time. I want to see those hollow points, and ballistic tipped bullets, expansion vs. the soft points. That 350 legend didnt even expand past the body diameter. They need to use softer lead or a lighter bullet for more velocity to get it to expand. This basically sold me on assembling my next upper as a 350 Legend. The ammo isn't _crazy_ expensive, but it definitely looks like a thumper that's legal for deer hunting in my state. For whatever reason, you can't use a 30-30 here during deer season but the 350 is apparently fine 🤷🏻
It definitely seems like a good all-around mid-range rifle cartridge and you're not really giving up too much in the way of capacity from a 5.56. It's not quite as versatile as 300 Blackout from a loading perspective, but it's probably more useful for us lowly civilians. Plus, if I want a quiet suppressed rifle putting down around 450lb•ft of energy on target, I'd just go with a 9mm upper. And the AR platform is so ubiquitous that you could use the same lower with a dozen differently built uppers...

I just sold my 30-30 lever as it wasn't getting any love compared to my 350 Legend. That was an awesome video sir - just goes to show how much power the 350 has in terms of penetration. I honestly wasn't expecting it to not expand like the 30-30. The 350 is a great option where we hunt given that you seldom have more than a hundred metres visibility to play with, but the 30-30 will always be a classic in a lever gun. Keep them coming 😀

I think your results are showing that the .350 Legend rounds you fired were not matched to the bullet used in that round, thus it lacked expansion. The lack of expansion put less resistence against the bullet as it traveled through the medium, allowing it to bleed off energy slower, thus it penetrated deeper.
The .30-30 round you fired was better matched to the bullet, so the energy bled off sooner because the bullet expanded the way it was supposed to. It also appears the .30-30 bullet expanded to a much greater degree than the .350 Legend bullet did.
Yes, penetration wasn't as deep with the .30-30, but it looks like it made it through at least one of those blocks, so even with (probably) around .300" more frontal area, it still penetrated at least 18", before that cookie sheet stopped it.
Had the .350 Legend been loaded with a bullet better matched to the power of that round, I believe you would've noted similar results as you achieved with the .30-30.
