  • Learn multiple ways how to use layers in Microsoft PowerPoint, using right-click or using the selection pane. See what items from your slide are on the top layer and what items are on the bottom layer. Easily rename items, move items up or down, and show or hide different items from your layers.
As full disclosure, I work at Microsoft.

Just learned about this feature, so I am watching this video because your tutorials are always great. And now the layers can lock. Between the layers pane, swapping, changing visibility, grouping with a keystroke, and locking, this might actually be kinda awesome.

one of those hidden gems! can you organize into having parent / sublayers in the selection pane? Or maybe if you group elements can you see the subelements directly from the selection pane? Also is there an ability to lock a layer so you still want to be able to visually see it while making graphic adjustments but not accidentally select it by accident?

Hi Kevin. Thanks. The LAYER panel plus the HIDE functions are good. However, it would be great if the next version upgrade also allows us to SELECT and LOCK an image, tools similar to those in Photoshop and AI. That way, we could work with all the other graphics that are UNLOCKED for fine-tuning the layout. I usually get problems when trying to select a small object/graphic in front of a large background graphic.

Kevin, there is an issue which i couldn't solve. Can you help me about it? For example, i want to move a few different objects together in one movement by only an animation. That's why i group them together with a background or frame which is considered as a page in where those objects are located. And that page will move together with its objects anymore after i applied an animation to the group. And it works well. Everything is okay. But when i try to add another object inside of that group to make it as a part of that group and of that animation, then i can not add it. I have to ungroup it totally (making this automaticly removes the animation), and then i have to choose new object together with the ungrouped objects, and then i must again group them to create same animation again of that group. And i have to again create same animation for the re-grouped objects.
Totally same trouble also happens when i want to remove an object from an animated group. Again i make ungroup (it removes animation automaticly), then i remove the object which i want to remove. Then i again group the remaining objects, and i again add the animation. If i can not solve this trouble, if i have to waste time like this, i will not use Powerpoint. Can you help me, please ??

Hey Kevin, great video! Can you please help us with locking objects? As we work on Teams, we have files being edited by 18 people concurrently on sharepoint. Large 80 page report. Some objects are live tables from Excel where they should not change or move at all in PPT and data is updated in Excel and reflects on PPT as it has been pasted linked. The issue is after closing Powerpoint and opening it back up, the excel pasted linked tables, resize to some gigantic size. Can you please help fix this bizzare issue? The issue has been around for a while and most comment pages on microsoft forums are locked and no solution provided. One user syggested the images to go in LAYOUT but we have live Excel tables and when I go to LAYOUTs the PASTE function is depricated and past as link from excel does not exist.
