  • Join me as I make a giant Easter egg, for our village Easter egg trail, out of papier-mâché (or is that paper mache?). Either which way, glue, newspaper, blood, sweat and tears. But it was worth it in the end.
    You can get 36" / 90cm balloons online, and then all you need is glue, paper and patience. Top tip: check it will fit through the door.
    Each week I usually post a watercolour tip, but I thought you might enjoy something different this week. Please subscribe if you want to be kept up to date.

    I once did a pinata for a neighbors child and I just used water and wood glue. Only 8-10 layers then painted it with acrylic paint ( spongebob theme) and they ended up having to get a hammer to bust it open so the kids could get to the candy...so I'll probably use pva glue if I ever make a pinata again😂

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Před rokem +1

      Yes, this one would be okay to make a broken egg or do a cut out. It will depend on the number of layers you've done and the strength of glue. PVA will be stronger than wallpaper paste for example. This all sounds intriguing! What have you got planned?

      I'm participating in my first Trunk-or-Treat". I'm setting up an alien invasion by creating a space ship on the open trunk with large alien who landed in the trunk. The alien will hold two large eggs each of which will have baby aliens sitting on top of their broken edges. The treats (twisty space straws holding rocket ship lollipops) will be inside the eggs. Oh yes….I am a Type 'A" over achiever LOL.
      Last question, do you need to let each layer dry before applying the next layer?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Před rokem +1

      @@bridgetmckenna3729 good grief. You’d better get going quick and don’t blame me when you get to layer six and ask Why, oh Why? That sounds amazing. Each layer doesn’t have to be dry, so I put 2 on at a time. It makes sense to dry as much as possible as you go not to trap moisture. It must be firm before popping the balloon and then with that gone more air can circulate to allow for final drying. Good luck!

    Wow. Your patience paid off. I told my son we were going to make huge paper mache' eggs. About 50 large ones. Then I found your video. Ain't no way...I'm dropping the number dow to 3. Does it have to be 10 layers, is there a specific glue or recommended brand and same amount water as the glue?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Před 2 lety +2

      Wooooh, 50????? You are ambitious! 3 is ambitious!! And my top tip is make sure you can get it through the doors of your house. This can't go through our internal doors. Luckily we have a double door to the outside! So for this size 10 layers is about right. It still has a little squash to it even with 10. A bit smaller and you could get away with fewer. It uses lots of glue, so I just went to the DIY shop and get a gallon of the cheapest PVA they had. PVA is a lot stronger than wallpaper glue, and I think that's important for this size. It really doesn't matter the brand. Watch out, some have fungicides in them. I don't know how old your son is, but you might want to be careful. Yes equal parts water and glue, I found worked well. And you needs lots of paper!!! Good luck!

    How long do we let the egg dry for?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Před 2 lety +1

      that really depends on how much glue you used, how many layers and what your climate is like. it will sound hollow when knocked. as long as it is firm you can pop the balloon and it will continue to dry.

      I have never tried that, but in theory it should be okay. Good luck!

      oh that’s a shame. you can always play it back slower (go to settings and you can change the speed of the film)
