  • How to make giant Easter eggs in 6 easy steps. This video is a step by step tutorial on making giant eggs. This is a project we made a while back. We built 10 giant eggs for a shopping mall decoration on Easter. Fallowing the steps you can make giant eggs yourself. We used regular insulation polystyrene for creating 1 meter high eggs. We used a driller powered lathe to speed up the process. I know it looks like fun but it can be dangerous so be very very careful!
    Step 1
Draw the giant egg at 1/10 scale. First of all you should know how to draw an egg. We're usually using circles to draw the giant eggs.
    Step 2
Now you need to use your polystyrene thickness on your scale drawing of the giant eggs. This way you'll be able to find the diameters of the circles you'll be cutting later out of insulation polystyrene.
    Step 3
Cut the circles. We used a jig saw for cutting the circles. I found a special long blade for cutting polystyrene. You can cut some of the smaller circles out of the bigger ones, so the egg is almost empty on the inside and also very light.
    Step 4
Glue the circles together in the right order. We used regular polyurethane foam as a glue because it's light and has a great bond. At this point you should have a rough giant egg.
    Step 5
Build a lathe. You can finish the egg by hand using a wire brush or you can improvise a lathe like we did. The lathe is actually made of a long screw that goes through the rough egg and two polywood circles. The whole lathe is powered by a driller.
    Step 6
Finish the egg. The idea is to cut out the corners of the rough egg and make it smooth and round using your drill "lathe". We used a saw blade at first for taking out bigger pieces and then moved to smoother and smoother sandpaper. Be very careful when using the lathe. Although it looks easy enough it can be very dangerous.
There you go. You should have now a giant egg. Imagine making 10 giant eggs. We were covered in styrofoam beads at the end.

It's just fun to watch, knowing it came from foam and made a decoration. Very creative. In fact, I just sent the link to a friend and they are going to try to make three of them (about half the size) for the waiting room. Thanks for sharing the details! Without the specs and watching the way you made it, they would have never tried. UPDATE: It came together so quickly, though a few learning mistakes made them skinner lol. You make it look easy. There was a lot of clean up that I think @angela14962002 would have loved to play in. You are amazing!

Great work! What do these eggs finally look like? And what do you use them for? Do you colour them?

Maybe it would also make sense to make a cardboard stencil for half of the egg, lengthwise, and use it while turning the egg to verify conformance to the desired egg shape. (I can't help it, I'm addicted to measuring.)

What kind of saw blade did you use for that initial cut to get the corners shaved off?

What would you say your material cost per egg was?

    • @CreativeMom
      @CreativeMom  Před 6 lety +1

We made them empty on the inside so the smaller circles were cut out of bigger ones. About 30 $ for a painted egg, maybe less.

+Pysanky Pittsburgh (personal page) Yes we think about puting watermarks on our videos from now on. Thanks for caring, and reacting, it's good to know that some people actually take action when they suspect something is wrong, it shows courage and rightness. Thanks for your thoughts, we try our best. Good luck with the egg hunt initiative :)
