- Dr. Terry Wahls has previously documented her recovery from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, but some have questioned whether her results can be replicated. She is now testing her diet in a randomized controlled trial against a ketogenic diet and a standard diet. We discuss how she is doing personally in late 2023 and her ongoing clinical trial.

I was stable for a year on OMS. I tried wahls keto and got really tired, so i quit after 3 months. After that i went from EDSS 4 to 6.5 which is life changing. I have spinal ppms so disability can go quickly, and i am not saying it was the diet. Obviously i am staying away from saturated fats for the rest of my life.
Great interview. Thank you for always sharing such great information. I would love to hear about the diversity goals of the study.
Thanks for doing this interview. Personally as an Italian my diet is worlds apart from all these three diets, I found my balance with a mostly plant based diet and would not change it no matter the results of this study. I believe the main inflammatory agent are refined carbs and sugar, so I expect all three groups to improve.
One thing that was not mentioned is if the participants are taking any DMT and what kind. If yes wouldn't that be a confounding factor?
Love your interview with Dr. Wahls! Its always informative. Do you know or can you get an interview with Montel Williams? He seems to be doing really well with his ms.
I would love to interview him, but I doubt he knows who I am.
Dr Brandon, I think it'd be great if you do an interview with him and I think he would be willing to. I remember when Montel had his show on and he was diagnosed way back when and I always thought the world of him as a person it would be great to see you get an interview with him. Don't sell yourself short Brandon you're a damn good doctor and a good person also.
I would LOVE to see Montell interviewed! His book was very inspiring!
Is there an initial period in HSCT where brain volume loss is higher though it turns around for the better long term quickly. Is that initial period worse among recipients of Myeloablative HSCT vs non-myseloablative HSCT?
Yes. Chemotherapy can temporarily cause accelerated brain volume loss. I am not sure about differences with different conditioning regimens.
Hey Dr B, I really enjoy your more technical videos, particularly those where you go over some of the newer studies that are coming out. I love that you both extract the important bits for us and that you give your opinion for some of the findings. Could you do a video where you talk about efficacy focusing on brain atrophy rate as the primary endpoint? Given the correlation between progression and brain atrophy rate, it'd be interesting to know more about how the current therapies fair against this endpoint specifically. I know, for instance, that there may be some evidence that Fingolimod may even surpass Orelizumab in this regard.
I have a video on brain atrophy in MS which will be published 10/18/23.
Amazing interview. 👏
I called that number for research program- no one picks up.
Hi from Israel very interesting interview I will send it to my daugther it gives a HOPE....❤
She's not honest, she did chemo and stem cell transplant.
She received novantrone according to her book (The Wahls protocol) but did not receive hematopoietic stem cell transplant.
What is NOVATRONE?
@@Sbannmarie298 Novantrone (mitoxantrone) is a potent but toxic disease modifying therapy for multiple sclerosis. It is no longer used due to the risk of heart failure and promyelocytic leukemia.
Oh got it- thanks for responding.
@@Sbannmarie298so she did chemo then?
another nice talk 🙂
I do believe diet as a complimentary therapy along with DMD’s. And do watch some of what she eats/ cooks.
Try to encorporate more colors and Whole Foods into my diet.
But as with everything- everyone’s body is different, this was a great interview.

Sure. Your mileage may vary as they say.
I'd be interested in knowing whether she sees diet as a "complete" MS treatment or whether it's better to use diet / exercise / lifestyle to "amplify" DMTs.
I have so many well-meaning friends tell me I don't need to "bother" with MS treatments because "here's a doctor who cured her MS naturally". Of course in 2007 / 2008 we didn't have the range of DMTs we have now. But DMTs are not without adverse effects - should we avoid DMTs altogether? Or should we be using everything all at once - treatment, diet, lifestyle - to try to control our diseases as best as possible?
Dr Wahls didn't use just diet. She had an intensive chemo treatment similar to HSCT but never mentions it. It's so irresponsible and dangerous; I fully believe that if she hadn't had the treatment she wouldn't have gotten better because secondary progressive MS doesn't just "get better". Please don't let "well-meaning" (uninformed) people deter you from using DMTs, they're the best hope we have besides HSCT. Diet should just be one of the weapons in our arsenal
Not even DMT can stop progression..
see "onset of secondary progressive ms despite long term Rituximab therapy"
Diet and exercise...forget about it..
a good way to kill your brain.
It has been proven to reduce progression though, if only by about 20-25%. But I'll take any reduction@@mary-vy3mo
She has also had the best treatment there currently is, and that is not available to most people with ms because of cost and availability.
She had Haemopoietic Stem Cell Therapy.
She could probably pretty much eat anything she likes after that?!? 🤬
well, she says she is okay but she doesn't show any movement...
Skipping breakfast has shown to be less beneficial than skipping dinner. Lots of studies recently around the bed for breakfast for early protein synthesis. It's recommended to fast going into sleep then eat like a king for breakfast to boost protein synthesis
My predictions are that paleo will be best followed by Mediterranean, then keto, and lastly, those that don't make a change.
Suggestion: have participants use the online Cronometer to log their food. This will make it less subjective in the end. It would be relatively inexpensive to upgrade them to Gold membership…or see if you can negotiate a free subscription to Gold membership. This would be beneficial to everyone.
until wahls includes all her medical history this is pointless. she had chemo
Hear hear.
If we could all have HSCT it would be worth listening to her diet over and above that
