A tutorial on decoding disc detainer keys would be nice (If it's even possible). I can only tell if a cut is zero or not :p

Thanks,i was watching someones' vid about learning to pick and he said i can order some cutaways which are better than the clear lock that i got in my china pickset, any ideas on the site? I've progressed from the clear one to a little masterlock and a kwikset doorlock and have since hit a wall in my learning, thanks again!

Thanks for the video. Is there a gauge for measuring botton/key pins?

I am assuming correct am I that some manufacturers may use the exact same size of pins that a different manufacturer might use?

I hate to disagree, but the cuts are 2 3 2 4 2 -- If the key will NOT slide into the next position on the key gauge, that means that it is the cut where it stops. I made this mistake when first using a key gauge. I also like to hold the key bow below the key gauge (with my hand on the key bow underneath the gauge) so I can clearly see which key bitting I am reading -- and also be sure to hold the key perpendicular to the key gauge -- check several spots. I have single slot key gauges specifically for "Kwikset", "Schlage", "Master", etc. -- no need to know the depth increments.

I have always found that they fit very tightly or perfectly when it's the correct one. There is a drastic gap for 23242 which is not correct
I understand what you mean but on certain locks I have found it is a hit or miss if they always fit perfectly. There has to be a degree of manufacturing tolerances which isn't perfect because some gauges are better than others
It either fits perfectly or somewhat tightly. It is never the super loose one before that with a gap which 23242 produces.
I wanted to show a close-up of that on the video but it was too hard to focus that macro shot

@@HelpfulLockPicker OK, my mistake, BUT I've always found when you cannot fit the key into the next step down at all, then the key bitting IS at the step where it will not go down any further to indicate a deeper cut (i.e., next step down). Guess you should show us that it will fit tightly into the next step. The key gauges can be a little "tricky", but once you get it down (and double check) you WILL get the correct bittings.

@@Pyrolock I think one thing we can agree on is just get a set of good calipers, lol.

I generally decide how Ken does and it works fine. That being said some cuts are very questionable especially on a worn key if anything I'll go with the smaller bitting depth, and if I'm wrong I can always put the key back in the machine and drop the bitting a down 1 cut.

You are correct, Ken. All of my keys that have the bitting stamped onto them, Schlage, KW, and Master Lock, check this way on my gauge.
