Now it just needs a RAM upgrade. Does require soldering, but it's only 4 chips, so not too bad of a job. Surprisingly, Leopard actually runs WAY better on these with 512MB. Though, I am working on a way to get 1GB working on these, which will be even more of a nice upgrade.
Only 1 core CPU though
That sounds like an incredible upgrade
Funnily enough I was just watching you upgrade it to 1gb ram.
@@FS--ew3se Unfortunately later on I find 1GB does not work, as the i945 chipset doesn't support 2Gbit chips. But I have an idea that should work to bodge on 4 extra chips.
@@dosdude1 cool
If you don’t have a blow dryer (3:51) you can power it on, make it get warm or hot in some way, it makes it much easier to peel off without breaking.
As I recall they run really hot.
10 likes celebration
Well, yes, but that would also make it too dangerous to manipulate, as there will be still some static electricity on the board, that's why you shouldn't open anything electric that stills warm
Apple really did think differently when they chose to ship this unit with an IDE HDD from the time of Pentium 3 laptops. As a matter of fact, I upgraded my 40GB disk to 120GB on my 1GHz P3 laptop, back in the day, just before getting a P4 one.
PS: the video is really awesome and the OS upgrade is quite intriguing, so the entertainment factor of this clip is high.
Wow...
Mac OS leopard and the old Mac os’s .. are my favorite os’s. Too bad we can’t install those instead.. I upgraded my 2014 MacBook and on that one I can go back but not on the 2018 Touch Bar
@Akhilesh Sattanathan what are you new?
@@aMabbitt yes
ide was still the stuff in 2005
I wish that Apple still did the intro videos, that was a great touch.
yeah
AHHH! That Gateway HD LCD monitor was my first LCD panel! I freaking LOVED that thing because of all the inputs it had! Composite, component, DVI, VGA, S-Video and a USB hub. That was an awesome monitor for the time, even if the picture kinda sucked. I remember using that bad boy for my PC, Xbox 360, original Xbox and PS2 all hooked into various inputs, and loved showing off how I could seamlessly switch my monitor from PC to game console. I even have the menu sound burned into my brain. DOO DOO.... Deedoo.... Good times...
i took inspiration from you and now I'm going to install windows 11 on my light bulb 💡 😋
I prefer running ubuntu on my favorite rock
i run a hackintosh on a hairdryer
I remember people doing this backkkk in the day! I was an avid Hackintosher so it always peaked my interest. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
should have bought a PC

3 great MJD videos in a row? This is awesome!
I liked the computer clans video on this so I’ll definitely like this video!
Thanks for another video for me to watch instead of sleeping and the being late for college.
This is going to be totally worth it in the end!
Just wanna say that I really enjoy your channel.
Hearing Michael being so happy makes me extremely happy too for some reason
In the early days of the Apple TV (1st Gen) I compiled and modified Mono to run .NET binaries on the Apple TV, which included the Banshee Music Player. The performance of the boxwasn't too exciting, but it was easily possible.
I don't think I've ever seen a device with an HDMI port that still uses an IDE HDD, anyways... Thank You Michael, very cool!
I'm almost certain that the cable box I had back in ~2009 had an IDE HDD and HDMI output. Boxy Motorola thing. :)
Literally my old motherboard
Lol, the more you know, now I feel young and clueless. In my country, DVI wasn't used much, so the technological jump from VGA to HDMI meant that I got many computers using SATA but only VGA, but none using IDE with HDMI. Crazy stuff.
@@AnotherFreakingDude Huh, same here, but I had an "special case". heck that motherboard even had DisplayPort! And it is AM2! (It is an M3A78-EM if you're curious)
The Ps3 devkit does
I love your videos Michael. Keep it up!
I just have to say, that bit at 9:00 where Disk Utility fails with a random error... that is so relatable. DU is so fragile, it never freakin works right. How hard is it to write a utility to partition and format a disk without tripping on its own 🦆??
He ignored the checksum error which I don’t think was DU’s fault.
I love the aesthetic of old Mac OS.
As a non-mac user I think Yosemite is the coolest rn. I just think it's the cleanest MacOS ever.
@Sentry A friend of mine is using Mac and is strongly discouraging it, especially for multimonitor setups: there is no option to pin the dock to one screen and it keeps jumping around and ruining your maximised apps. No keyboard shortcut to move windows to the sides or to other monitors (like Win+Arrows on Windows). No monitor daisy chaining. The non-ARM macbooks are jet engines. Also personally I think Windows got way better design with Win11 than it had in 10, it went back to having somewhat readable icons. If it's just the design you're going for, I wouldn't do it. Also Windows can be customised a lot, I'd look into some custom icons and themes if I were you.
A gateway monitor?? Love it.
That's cool! Hope i'll be able to do this stuff when i can get one.
Hope we will be able to use Mac OS X on the first gen Apple Watch in the future 🙏
Video watched and guy subscribed !! when start a new Mac was a beautiful Experience, thank u so much!!
I think the most exciting part is that nothing went wrong.
since i did this already last year when i found a site on how to mod a first gen apple tv to mac os, was so easy, just used a keyboard with usb ports and a external cd rom drive and mouse with copy of mac os x, still works. found an apple tv in recycle bin, so i grabbed it to use it as a first gen mac mini. not bad for a free mac
LOL there are zero recyclable parts in an AppleTV!
God knows what it was doing in there.
I think this is sort of cool, I might go buy one just to do this.
Still got my 160GB model running Debian 11 and RetroArch. This thing is still awesome.
How’d you get Debian installed? I couldn’t get it to boot
@@DistrosProjects lol
do they support 4k resolutions?
@@lolcat this thing is from 2007.
Sus here.
Very nice. I had to try several times on a ATV1, but with 160GB HD on different iMacs. But now it worked and it works perfectly fine. I'm surprised that it even shows full HD on my monitor. I'll use it for eMail and some lightweight stuff!
awesome 😊 brings back memories when my dad first bought one back in the day.
This would lowkey be really cool for retro gaming
Happy Thanksgiving!
The OG. I loved my original Apple TV.
looking forward to your tutorial for transferring the washing machine to a homelab server
There's a faster way to show hidden files and folders on macOS. The shortcut is command+shift+period to show & hide as well.
good backup mac
Hey MJD you should use Bootcamp and try to put Windows on it next.
Great video as always!
Thanks for sharing this❗👍🤙
Awesome video, Michael!
I've installed a full desktop debial using osmc custom version, and even upgdate it to recent version, so if you need a some little server for bots, sync, etc, you can use 1st gen Apple TV
Hacked one of these back in 2009, doing it the SSH in method. I thought I'd have a sweet emulation box but the reality was it was prone to random relaunching and utterly slow performance. I put SNES9x on it and it did work but just barely.
I’ve got an idea install windows 11 on arm on a windows phone
I am waiting four years for this.
Four years ago you said: "In next video I will install MacOS X on this".
Snow Leopard was the last macOS that looked really cool. Good times.
this is your standard MJD video things going not as expected and then the spelling not going right I feel bad for him but I've been there love your content MJD thanks for all the amazing content
I want that monitor back again
I seem to remember folks upgrading the hdd to the largest available then removing the wifi card and installing a Broadcom Crystal HD decoding card. Don't remember which OS was favored most though.
Cool. In 2008 I installed on the same apple tv 10.4 (Tiger). Can you install OpenElec on it? It was a very cool thing at the time.
Classic Apple box + Mac OS X Leopard = Classic Mac Mini
michael mjd is so goofy with his videos
You can use Apple TV remote from ur phone. It’s under utilities from settings on ur iPhone.
Oh I saw The 8-Bit Guys video
Cool to see you doing it
Great video as usual :)
Did the CMD + Shift + Dot-Key command not work in those early OSX-Versions to show hidden files? Just curious :D
Thank you! And no, that keyboard shortcut doesn’t work on the version of OS X that I was running
@@MichaelMJD in those days I installed Tinker Tools to show hidden files an to switch on/off much more Finder-features
I really love this video tho lol with him and the Apple TV and installing updates and doing expirementd with it
13:54 *The tall-can kicks in*
Damn, saw one of these in a thrift store once, should have picked it up!
Hello, can you try installing a Nvme drive on old computers and make a video about it?
dude!) it was awesome! What about AppleTV 4? :)
I wonder if you could get an IDE to SATA adapter and put a SATA SSD inside 🤔
one of the first xd also next video: getting the apple A17 bionic before anyone else
Hmm - gives me an idea: wondering I can flash an ATV2 to run Fyde OS ,,,?!
Nice. I have one too, but I’d put Win98 on it
This may seem like sacrilege, but think about this: It reports a 1GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and it has a 40GB HDD. Those are prime stats for a fast Win98SE machine...
i was thinking the same thing
Unfortunately, the firmware prevents this, but it’s probably possible with tons of custom drivers. XP is doable with a hacked kernel but wouldn’t perform that well on 256MB.
There would have to be chipset and video drivers available, however.
@@iannicolson chipset should be intel Pentium M/intel core 1st gen era iirc & video is like a GeForce 7300go or something shouldn't be an issue as some multimedia linux distros like xbmc were extended to work on Apple TVs back in the day
QEMU with Windows 2000 works fine
i'm still using this blue wallpaper in Ventura 😅
Poor Michael has been traumatized to the point that he's not sure what to do when things actually go according to plan.
Can you also install the very last Apple TV OS on an old Mac mini?
He should do a retrospecive on old Mac-only programs. See which ones can run on this modded apple TV
oh shi im gonna try to do that
wow is the GPU fully working? I remember Ken installing Tiger without Sound and basic Graphics only.
Very intresting
Omg it works 😳
oh my god good
Should have used a modded browser for Leopard/Snow Leopard to help ya get around the web better. Very cool project! dosdude1 did this, but he also took it apart and upgraded the RAM to 512MB. He was aiming for 1GB but for some technical reason he described, he could only get half.
Does the analog output work? Can you hook it up to a CRT? :)
Yeah, the 1st Gen Apple TV! I just installed with a custom Firmware (OSMC) back in 2019 to use it as a media center. However, installing OS X as I saw from Computer Clan might been possible(?). Thanks for the video Michael!!
It’s possible but you need a MAC computer for modify the files on the apple tv hdd.
@@Peti4391 yeah that might be too.
I used to use OSMC on an Apple TV back before I had a smart TV - it was fairly slow because of lack of HD video decoder but still got me there!
Hi Michael, I bought a HDMI to DVI cable and It's not working on my Laptop but It works on everything else. What should I do? (yes, my laptop's HDMI port works well)
what browser are you using? didnt think u could get online with any modern browser.
I was curious if putting that HDD on an old Mac would boot the Apple TV OS
Why is the galaxy on the install disc in the thumbnail orange? I have a Leopard install disc right in front of me and it’s definitely purple.
Will this allow one to use a mouse on Apple TV device?
can you try firefox 76.0.1 dmg and see if web runs better
atv gen 1 does not run a modified osx version its based round a intel pentium m based CPU an nvidia 7300 chipset
it has a normal install of osx on it only thing it does is startup frontrow bij default on boot.
This would make for a great stand for a Mac mini :)
Oh! I saw the Video from the Computer Clan Installing Tiger on that thing.
Pretty Excited to See Leopard running on that thing!
Profound 😮
i miss macos leopard.. i love ventura. but i miss leopard
Mr. MJD, You should get your hands on the iPad 1st gen
You can press Cmd+Shift+. to show hidden files in Finder more easily btw
He appears to be on OS X 10.11 which was before they added that I think.
@@4444aa Just checked, you're right, didn't realize that it wasn't added until macOS Sierra

a MJD video without any major issues? who are you and what you did with MJD??
Does this version of mac os have Imessage? If so this could actually be useful for me. I have an old appletv laying around and I could set it up as a dns server to route all my iMessages to my android device. This could be super cool!
Nah, iMessage was introduced with Mountain Lion 10.8 in 2012 and, even then, I wouldn't be surprised if iMessage has changed enough to break that version now
I did this a few years back, was slow, But i did it and sold it on ebay,
so can u run macos on the new apple tv cuz both are on arm now
I’d call it command prompt, because is it running DOS?
MJD: installing macOS Sonoma on
a 2007 MacBook bro
Me:OMG
Sad to see no Apple stickers. Just got 4 free today because work was throwing out two iPad Mini boxes that were found in storage and I managed to get them to let me have the stickers before the boxes were binned.
I did not know they were that powerful
Yes sir a whole 256MB of RAM, leaving you 112MB once MacOS has loaded.
UNLIMITIDDD POWAAAAH, well actually it's fairly limited power.
Apple guys are used to it 🤣
Can you upgrade the processor and the ram?
when you see michael mjd posting a video 9 minutes ago, you know it's gonna be good.
Not sure if this would be applicable for the version(s) you're using. But at least on modern macOS, Cmd+Shift+. (yes, period) will show all files in Finder.
That wasn’t a thing on the version of OS X that I was running
Question, the mid-2009 MacBook Pro you used to write the image, is that a dual core? What OS X version are you running? I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro but I was having trouble updating it, and ended up going back to snow leopard. No good browser options for snow leopard. What would you recommend?
With a decent amount of RAM Id do no less than 4, 8GB is best for these days) youd be surprised what you can run. I have a 2009 iMac Core 2 Duo running Monterey through OCLP.. I would also suggest an ssd though,
Try to install that on a newer gen or a different streaming system
Me: wanting a Mac mini
MJD: Makes this video
Me: 😱
Ken from the computerclan got it to work.
