I am so excited to partner with CamelBak to bring another episode of Behind The Run to life. This episode I was incredibly lucky to collaborate with my friend Nick Danielson to tell the story of Rebecca Murillo. Rebecca has gone through a lot of what many ultrarunners experience in their careers - injury or setbacks and the rebuilding it takes to come back to the sport we love. Having run many ultramarathons in the past, Rebecca has been in the midst of a recent rebuilding phase leading into a mountainous 25k and opens up about the mindset it takes to start that journey over from scratch.

Big thanks to CamelBak for bringing another episode of Behind The Run to life! This collaboration with one of my FAVORITE adventure creators, Nick Danielson, tells a story we can all relate to. Rebecca Murillo is a seasoned Ultrarunner that is in the midst of rebuilding after a recent injury. The process of coming back to a sport we love is challenging, no matter where we are in our journey. Thank you Rebecca for sharing your story!

I went into heart failure over the pandemic and I've had to completely reframe my approach to running; instead of approaching it with an attitude of "I can reach any goal if I work hard enough," I've had to learn how to approach it with an attitude of "I'm going to find gratitude in whatever I'm able to do today." I don't know if I'll ever get my heart back-in all likelihood, I never will-but I know I can still experience joy while running even if it's only a fraction of what I used to do.

I'm in the same boat. Lost my colon in August from Ulcerative Colitis. I have spend the past 3 months rebuilding, I'll never be the same runner again (ran mountain races in Europe 2017-2019) but in a strange way I'm now more appreciative of what I am able to physically do even though it's not at all near what I was capable of doing before this all happened.

I loved these comments- thank you for reminding us that running just for the joy of moving your body is enough and wonderful!

@@starcurtain I'm sorry to hear about your challenges but I admire your resilience. I find that even though I'm not able to do as much as I'm used to, I can still-on my day-get in a strenuous workout. Pushing yourself always feels good.

@@JamieAsareZiegler thank you! You are more of an inspiration. It helps to know there are other people having to adapt to life altering events but keep on persevering...one foot forward at a time. The definition of grit. :) good luck, hope everything works out for you.

I ran my first mountain ultra in August 2022. It was the hardest thing I'd ever done, and I really struggled to feel strong again in the year since. The past few months, especially, saw my weekly mileage dwindle: "What happened to the casual Saturday 25K?" I asked myself. "Who is this unfit loser who only managed 13 miles all of last week?" I was scared that I was never going to run an ultra again.
Last week, I increased my mileage a bit. Today's run felt pretty good. Slowly but surely, I'm rebuilding.
Thank you for this video; it came at just the right time.

Rebuilding your body. I am convinced Rebecca's message also applies to getting back to fitness that you may have let slide for too long. "There is beauty in the breakdown." But there is so much peace, safety, and happiness in building back. 🙂

I miss the doc/style content that you used to make. It really helped me before I would run. I was going hard before having my first child and the pandemic hitting at the same time and have not been able to get back to it since.

Would be great if high school PE coaches would show this to their students (and maybe even have a local ultra trail runner(s) come and speak) - remove the mystery and unknown about trail running. One thing many knew trail runners says is they didn’t know ultra trail running was a “thing”.

I run with many teachers and pe coaches they try to introduce some trail running into there Saturday long run for cross country, but the kids a more about going fast not some hard steep hills which I love hills😊

I dig this. Multiple injuries since 2017 and 3 kids later my body feels it. I’ve been trying to get better at working with what I’ve got versus getting frustrated at what I can’t do.
