Building the Worlds Smallest Escalator (That WORKS 😮)

- This project has been in development since January 2022, and the original idea stems right back to the underground subway diorama that was built back in November 2019! It only took almost 12 months to finish!
I tinkered with this project on and off over that time but really knuckled down for the past 3 months to get it completed.
The original TinkerCAD file can be found here for those wanting to download and 3D print the model as well: www.tinkercad.com/things/hqU0...
Also a parts list is available on my website here: www.bouldercreekrailroad.com/...
I designed it in such a way that it can be retrofitted and adjusted by others who also want to have a go at building something similar.
While all the files are final designs that worked for my finished model you may still find depending on what 3D printer settings you use you may still need to make minor adjustments to your printed pieces in order to get them perfect. The tolerances are quite tight. - Zábava
Well that escalated quickly.
Let's continue to uplift these artists.
Yeah, I've been try to step up my model building game 😄
I particularly liked the step by step instructions on how to make this.
Trust Luke to take things to a whole new level
I came to make these jokes, but turns out you'd come in at a level above me.
I love how you cleverly cut out what happens to the poor dude at the top of the escalator 😂
LOL, yeah I should have left it in.... spoiler alert, he falls 😆
@@BoulderCreekRailroad I hope we can see a short of it at least :P
Glad to see i wasn’t the only one waiting until the very end. 😂
I yelled at my tv when it cut to black. Ultimate cliffhanger
I was thinking the same thing, but to be fair he made a working escalator, not a working person. If you don't step off an escalator right in real life you wipe out also.
This is utterly incredible. Back in the 1990s, I tried to make an HO escalator using a kit of whitemetal parts, and very nearly gave up on that. So to do one that looks that good and actually works, is simply jaw-dropping. No wonder it took a year to do.
Thanks Andrew, it's only achievable now because of the tools we have like 3d printers, I'm excited to see what this hobby will look like in another 20 years!
these 3D printers have really impacted the scale modeling world as a whole. whether it would be model railroading, tabletop/wargaming, or just simple maquettes used by the engineering/architectural industry, it is a great and generally cheaper solution to older techniques such as casting with resins and other plastics. i am looking forward to what these incredible machines will bring us in the future!
I'm atm making my diploma for 3d design & printing in the dental medicin. It is sooo inpressive what one can create today!
@@thebackyard7661 soon we will be printout out replacement heart, livers and kidneys!
If anyone feels like being crazy 😜and have a go at building this model the original files are free to download, change and use on TinkerCAD: www.tinkercad.com/things/hqU0v5olf49
Wait I thought the point of these videos was seeing you fiddle around with all those frustratingly small parts so we don't have to? :D
That's really kind and generious of you. I wish you a good day 😊
My dude, you need to really start learning some proper constrain based CAD package.
Honestly, you could post 1 video a year and I'd be happy - you put SO much work into what you do!
This was almost a year in the making?! Worth the time spent, this is amazing!
Also I think this would go great with the subway diorama you did.
Again amazing build!
ha ha thanks Mo, yeah the subway was the initial inspiration for this project 😊
One more year and the armrest is rolling too 😇
@@EvoKey Mmmm, can one do rubber FDM printing? More likley is resin laser printing a rigid version as a master to create a mold then casting a stretchy silicone. Mind you, silicone is pretty grippy so it would not slide well. A nylon would be better but that might be hard to cast. Mmmm, how does the hand-rest of a real escalator travel?
@@fredericapanon207 Google "escalators".
You are a tribute to the planet earth. We don't often see this on CZcams. Your work brings sunshine into my life!
As someone who uses SolidWorks to design regularly, I'm impressed by the tinkercad skills, because I definitely would've thrown my computer out of the window
I used some SolidWorks back in a high-school class, trying SketchUp after that sure was a major downgrade...
you're an absolute artist, your dedication is astounding and your mechanical skill is clearly years of interest, practice and devotion. it's amazing that you not only do all the models that you do but also share them all with us Ɛ>
thankyou
I love this project so much. You did something amazing and changed the standard of all dioramas in the world. Everyone should take an example and create ultra-realistic dioramas (e.g. railway) and add working escalators at stations. Congratulations! Amazing job!
Oh my goodness! This looks like it's going to be amazing, and I can't wait to see how you made it work. I've been hoping you would continue to build the rest of the subway diorama since the original video, so this has made my day.
Thank you so much! Yeah the subway was the spark that inspired this project, I'm planning to build an entirely new subway station though! It a future project planned for later down the road 😉
@@BoulderCreekRailroad I can't wait, I know it's going to be amazing. ☺
Your tenacity and patience rewarded you with an absolutely amazing miniature machine. Well done sir.
Thank you so much Norman 😀
Can't wait for the model of the Mall! :p
This is amazing! My husband and I love your videos and watched the subway diorama you did... I told him how awesome it would be if it was an actual working escalator. And you did it! We love your work. So talented.
Sharing your files is very nice of you. It helps bring more folks into the hobby world. Thanks. 🇨🇦
This is fantastic. Luke is the king of modelers. What accuracy and detail he brings to his models. This is just a sublime project. Many can dream of this. We always look forward to the new videos from you.
Crazy that you did it in tinkercad. Ive not used the program yet as I use other CAD Programs but from what Ive seen from tinkercad its quiet limited. You pulling this of is just amazing! well done
LOL, yeah it probably would have been better to use fusion 360 or something similar, I like TinkerCAD for its simplicity but yes it's limited in so many ways!
Its great for beginners though 😉
@@BoulderCreekRailroad yea that's right. I'm really amazed by your works. Im following you for quiet some time despite building completely different types of models myself but it's so fascinating to see what you do. Especially since you started printing things
Words don't adequately express the wonder. Fantastic job Luke! Thanks for allowing us along for the ride.
I love this build, the little detail of the interlocking grooves in the steps adds a lot to the illusion of scale, now all it needs is someone to figure out how to make the railings move in the same direction.
As a lift and escalator engineer, I can confirm it's a proper job. I'll be in every two months to overcharge for putting too much oil on it!
LOL, I watched a video about escalator and apparently they install the system at a loss and make their money back through propriety servicing... see you next week with that can of oil 😄
True story I'm afraid mate
@@BoulderCreekRailroad Just like cheap printer-copiers. You pay dearly for the ink cartridges, so just refill them 😉
You are not a lift and escalator engineer.
@@remkojerphanion4686 In business school they actually call it “the printer and ink model” when a business only makes money on consumables.
This is an unbelievable project... Well...DONE!!
Simply an amazing model, and so cool that you shared all of the design work. I absolutely do not need an HO scale escalator and yet somehow now I feel like I need an HO scale escalator!
Brilliant as always Luke! Definitely a "step" above the rest!
Awesome job! Congratulations Luke!
Amazing job! Beautiful piece of work!
Wow, super cool model. Definitely worth getting in the 3D printer game. Thanks for sharing Luke . Awesome. 🎉
Love this build! Amazing project!
Luke, Every time I see one of your newest entries I am quite keen on seeing them, but your projects just seem to get ever more technical and immensely above and beyond any other modeler I can think of other than Pelle Soeberg from Denmark. Your dioramas are getting ever closer to perfection. They are so intricate it makes my head hurt. Are you a multi Phd in several disciplines of engineering ? What drives you to ever more difficult concepts. I expect that you are a top designer at some amazing high concepts corporation in Melbourne or Sydney. You are amazing Luke. Top sort !
You're crazy to attempt this, and a hero for pulling it off magnificently! You need this in the background of your underground train diorama...
Incredible as always. Shows how much you love the craft. A whole year designing and perfecting it its utterlly awesome. This is a huge inspiration, might actually pick up a half done diorama I did a couple of month ago. Thank you for this Luke. Cheers
Absolute Legend... And those elevator connections will make amazing functional tank treads with very little tinkering or cadding.
Everything you make is utterly astonishing. Great work!
Congrats Luke! Your hard worked paid off, it looks fantastic!
This is amazing. Thanks for your work!
Very creative work and great effort too, thanks for sharing!
Utterly phenomenal - would love to see this incorporated in a diorama. 🙂
🥰 Fabulous and Much Needed! 🥰
Great work!!
Fabulous, Luke! Congratulations.
Many thanks! Glad you liked it 😉
Hello Luke! Talk about impressive planning, dedication and work. Both my girlfriend and I were very impressed with this build and here I thought this was something that could only be purchased as a very expensive kit somewhere.
Thank you for sharing and all the long hours you had put into this build. Cheers!
Ooooh, I so wanted to see the little dude trip at the top! How could you cut away each time!?! Great build! It looks amazing!
Fantastic Luke. I use to work on the escalators in the Melbourne Underground Loop.
Amazing , well done Luke.
Utterly amazing! Your builds are always way beyond anything I'm capable of, but this one's a step (no pun intended) beyond your usual extremely imaginative projects. And at such a small scale too!
Wow you're a madman to design this in tinkercad!! :D
Awesome build, Luke. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼👍🏼

Another build that mesmerizers the viewer. Luke you have that special talent that not very many have. Thanks again for such a great build - looking forward to your next venture.
8:53 no can flip?!?! riot!
Absolutely incredibly process. I feel so lucky to be able to watch a 13 minute version of this ~100hr project.
lol 😄 Totally missed opportunity!
P.S. I'm loving the level of professional quality in your videos at the new studio! They are so fun to watch 😎
@@BoulderCreekRailroad thank you, Luke!!
Your skills are on the up, and up...
lol, I'm trying to elevate my skills in each video 😄
Amazing model Luke. All you need now is some sort of scene to go around it like a shopping centre. - Nicholas.
Amazing..not just the model, but the engineering design process too.
I bow to this work. The construction in Thinkercad alone is worth an Oscar. Thank you for showing and greetings - Tino
That is pretty amazing -I am using many of the tips from your videos as your attention to detail is excellent and me being a perfectionist in my modeling has had me watching virtually all of your videos now.
You never fail to amaze me! What a fantastic build!
You are the best ever modeler I have ever seen!!! A real artist!! Well done. Cheers Onno.
Wow. That is amazing. 😮
It takes allot to impress me, and I am exceptionally impressed to a high degree of being amazed. Well done on the higher standards of detail. I enjoyed watching this and actually intend on watching it again.
What do you mean the handrails are not animated as well 🙂
Seriously nice piece of engineering there Luke.
Well then. Is that a bar I see way up there? You are a hard man to follow sir. Thank you for making the files available! Much respect.
This is just incredible work. I cannot imagine how many hours were spent in Tinkercad, the 3D printer and adjusting and correcting the finale parts. Thanks for sharing this.
I used to work for an escalator company and have to say it us amazing. Reducing a fully working escalator to this size obviously dictated changing how one really works but I can't see how anyone could have done it better.
oh cool, that's a huge compliment coming from someone who worked with the real thing 😃 Thanks!
@D.O.M. Oooh question for you: what kind of rubber is used for the moving handrail of an escalator? Is it a vulcanised rubber? Would a silicone casting works for Luke's escalator model, assuming he would want to tackle that challenge?
Awesome work Luke, that is crazy detail.
Glad you like it! 😊
A project every bit as fiddly as I could have feared. Well done.
Now make the moving hand rail ! 🙂
As always, a masterpiece of model engineering!
Thanks Geoffrey, I had fun building it 😀
Amazing work!
Dear Luke, I have watched all your videos and they were all very enlightening, entertaining and awe-inspiring. I wish I could do what you do but I don't have time and space (small home). Great job! Keep up the good work!
Amazing design, well done mate.
Such insane dedication, truly one of the best. Very inspirational!
This is fantastic great work 👍
Awesome work M8!!
Always amaziing works!
Absolutely amazing!
Dude! Absolutely Incredible!!!
Another amazing project Luke. Just brilliant and I admire what you do. Keep up the great work
czcams.com/video/nxl7eUxskZE/video.html
Fantastic work 👍🏆
Very cool, nice job!!
The result is amazing but in my opinion doing that with the limited thinkercad is even more crazy fantastic. If at some point you decide to change to fusion or solid works you will be able to recreate a mini world in your garage :) Continue like this! We really enjoy your content.
Agreed! Watching him use tinkercad to create this is like watching someone use toy utensils to make a croquembouche! Impressive, but also... painful
To be fair, Tinkercad is free to use after creating an account. I use it for all my work related projects. Fusion and SolidWorks are better but require subscription.
Using Tinkercad means that anyone else interested in building this for themselves can simply create an account and begin playing with the files.
Beautiful job. A really cool build.
Just incredible. You never cease to amaze me.
Incredible build, Luke!
Simply impressive!!!
Meticulous and precise work: gives an amazing realism to the models. My respects from Spain.
That is crazy. What a fantastic result.
This is incredible. I had no idea what was happening at any stage of the build, but it is still incredible.
Amazing Luke! Your a Master!
Feels like this might be gearing up to continuing the subway build 😁😁😁
another beautiful project. well done.
Thank you so much 😀
This is absolutely amazing! I expect some of the same design could be used on a ski lift!
Perfect job! 👍🏻🙂
This is an excellent build. Well done!
Luke, once again amazing work! You really do a great job!
Amazing work.
Outstanding piece of model making
Thanks Alan 😉
@@BoulderCreekRailroad your welcome
Amazing design, Luke! Really fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
This is insane, awesome job
Awsome job!
Very unique ideas. Very well done. God bless you.
Amazing! Good video🥰
Would love to see more on you working on tinker cad.
Absolutely stunning. I have done some much simpler designs in tinker cad. I made my own variation of the paint shaker that you made, but to be completely 3d printed. All of the trial and error it took for that was massive, I can only imagine something as complex as this escalator. Your videos always inspire me to try new and more complicated builds. Thank you.
