The Rollercoaster Clock is something out of my childhood dreams. I used to play tons of rollercoaster tycoon as a kid, and I spent a good portion of my life planning to be a rollercoaster designer. Dreams have finally come true as I formulated this track. Dreams were then shattered as I realized it was going to be weeks before I could see the thing working in real life. The lifting mechanism uses a couple linkages that work in tandem to raise the ball up to the top of the track. Then gravity takes over as the ball travels through a loop de loop and a helix before finding it's way onto one of 3 tracks that make up the clock face. The track selection is handled by a gear system that is connected to a cam and follower mechanism. After 10 minutes go by, the balls on the lowest track get released via another cam and follower mechanism. The selector then selects the next track, and a ball is deposited. This is repeated every 10 minutes until an hour has passed, where the same mechanism selects the top track. After 12 hours have gone by, all 3 tracks get emptied, and the cycle starts again.

this honestly belongs in the main lobby of an engineering museum. It's such an elegant piece which would fit perfectly
Thank you! That would be pretty cool
There actually is one of these at a museum close to where I live! It's not a clock, but it's a similar construction!
Awesome idea! I do have a suggestion that would make that clock WAY easier to read instead of counting the balls one by one. If you simply added numbers below where the balls lined up, it would be simple for other people to read it without having to explain. So if you put numbers 1-12 on the top, 10-50 in increments of ten on the middle row, and 1-9 on the bottom, I think then you would have the perfect clock!
Or you can have a raspberry pi run a count using a camera to display it on a LED matrix! Just another addon , and with the raspberry pi added you can make it a controller for ambient lighting and such. You don't have to redesign the clock mechanism again. But adding more stuff does not necessarily make it more efficient
Love the idea of using the pi to count the balls 😂 I didn’t want to take away from the clean aesthetic so I left the numbers off! Gotta make people work for the time 😀
@@wowzande And adding color led under the acrylic parts
Crazy beautiful !
I think it's beautiful as is. it's not about the time, it's about the beauty of the machine. Great work! @@Engineezy
@@wowzandeif you can get a raspberry pi these days…
I need a live stream of this thing running 24/7....
a real time, 12 hour, cinematic, ambient music, video of this would be dope. I can imagine me having it on while working and such.
That trick with printing your loop flat and then moving it around with the heat gun was 200iq. Thank you so much for sharing that little bit of an idea in the video
It was the first timer I’ve ever tried something like that! Definitely a good tool to keep in the bag
Legit. Gonna have to put that one in my back pocket!
This project really highlights the growth in your CAD mastery. Gorgeous engineering and art
Thank you! My computer could barely keep up haha!
Love the revist of old projects, it's like how artist redraw old pictures to show how they leveled up
Hahah true! Definitely feels like I’ve upped my game since then
This is so impressive. Just wow. A 13 minute video from months or work. Thanks and keep inspiring people!
Thanks for appreciating! Will do 😀
make it really small?
I'd buy one. It'd also be cool if it had numbers under where the balls sit so you don't need to count them to read it.
I would totally buy the files for one that could fit just like normal ball bearings
Make a wrist watch out of it
Now make it 5 times smaller
Truly brilliant, Jay. Honestly, your artistic sense combined with your engineering skill makes you one of a kind. Amazing work - and a beautiful art piece.
Thanks Michael! Appreciate your ongoing support!
Your builds are just so elegants. The supports, the shape, it's really nice!
Thank you for appreciating! I feel like the design aspects can get lost in the engineering sometimes and try really hard to make sure that doesn’t happen
The fact that you used cam wheels running off a single motor instead of just programming separate motors to open the track doors really bumps this to the next level, love it.
Thanks! Decided I had do go full out or not at all on this one 😅😵 appreciate you appreciating!
The full release @ 12 is so satisfying!
Agreed!
I can’t imagine how proud you are of that and that feeling you got when you saw that it actually works. That was awesome to watch!
Definitely felt proud about this one! Thanks for enjoying it as much as me 👊👊
Incredible!!!
I had the thought that all motion sculptures are clocks, just usually not aligned with the quirky periods of our time measurements. I often get lost in the rhythm of motion sculptures, as a new beat, or way of counting time is shown to me. All that to say, don't be afraid to make strange clocks. If it moves on a period, it's a clock.
Very true!
Wow this is just impressive! So mesmerizing. Upload the behind the scenes video next with all the prototyping and development, I would love to watch that!
It would just be a video of me staring at my computer for hours on end! 😅
I don't understand why marble runs are so satisfying, but man.. they are 😂
Awesome build!
My thoughts exactly! Thank you!
Great video!! I can' imagine the brain it would've taken to design all the mechanisms. All the mechanisms working together in perfect synchronization is just beautiful! It's my dream to be able to make cool mechanisms like this!!! Again Great video!!
Thank you! This is the culmination of years of making projects! Piece by piece, you got this!
I love watching the progression of your skills in how components are designed / assembled / connected ... So cool! Great work on this project, as always. 💪🏻
Thanks! Definitely feels like progression, glad you can appreciate 👊
I watch a lot of these kinds of videos, but this is the first one in a LONG time to truly inspire me to try to create something fanciful and functional. I LOVE this project. I'd love to see more behind the scenes, more design, and more build of this project. This was a great 13 minutes and I'd love to see a lot more!
Thank you!! Really appreciate that, thinking I’ll do a live stream to talk more about the details and answer questions!
Incredible work my friend. I love watching your problem solving and how you get your final design together.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thanks so much for watching!
Awesome. So much dedication is inspiring to see. Great work.
Appreciate you appreciating! Glad I can inspire
Thats amazing! You should make it a clock!
...Oh, wait.
😉
Absolutely top notch work! Well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, one of the most impressive projects I've seen on CZcams! Awesome job 👏
Thank you!! Appreciate it 😀
Another masterpiece, outstanding work!
Thank you very much!
Congrats on this. It's an artful and impressive clock that is satisfying to watch.
Glad you enjoy it!
Amazing!! I never get tired of watching your creations.
Thank you so much 😀
Wow awesome! Now for a military time, 24-hour format 😆
🥵🥵🥵 hahaha!
this is a really great project, well done
Thank you!!
Awesome project Jay, I love the mechanisms you came up with! There are lots of great ideas in this video like the one with the heatgun and the loop, I keep that in mind ;)
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely a good trick to keep in the bag
Hey creative youtube dude that does cool things that entertain me.
I just thought I would let you know about R-Type Nylon Rivets. As a fellow person who assembles various prototype like things (albeit usually a much smaller scale), I think that these would be pretty awesome for you.
They are reusable, require less effort in cad than threads or threaded inserts, can be shipped with spares really cheaply compared to most hardware, come in white so that they fit in with the color scheme of most of your projects, and come in all sorts of sizes so you can pick whatever you'd like.
I've recently used them in the physical construction of a custom drone test stand, and I'm really liking them, so I thought I'd share. Much less headache than the usual heat set inserts, or busting out the impact driver for direct into plastic screws and all they require is 2 holes in panels, or 2 holes where one side is a panel and the other has just a countersunk space for the back end of the rivet to expand into making them dead simple to insert into cad, and because they're so cheap, but look decent from the outside, your prototype can end up being your finished product.
Wow, that's really cool. And not even an advertisement as I thought it was. Thanks!
Good to know! Will definitely check it out
That is so absolutely massive! Love it as always!
Thank you! Appreciate the ongoing support 🙏🙏
I’m intrigued to purchase this product
That full clear was satisfying AF to watch.
Hahaha I know right?! You only get it twice a day to keep you wanting it
So cool man!
This is such an engineering beauty
Props 👏👏
Thank you!!
That is absolutely phenomenal!
Thank you!!
So wonderful, so elegant, just looking like a wow.
Thanks so much 😊
Impressive as always.
Thank you! Cheers!
That is so cool; well done!
Thank you!!
This is insane it really belongs in a museum. Your work is unbelievable.
Thank you!! Really appreciate that
Wow I’m blown away 5:30 am Saturday morning Kelowna, great start to the weekend. 👍
Thanks for starting your weekend off with me!
Great watch, really well made project!
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed
Fantastic design and I like the way you present your thinking
Appreciate it!
I think you should just make crazy mechanical clocks from now on.
Hahahah! I do have another clock idea in my future
awe man what an inspiration! so cool !
Thank you! 🙏🙏
Always marvelous and inspirational, it's absolutely amazing!
Thank you so much!
So freaking premium man. I wish the balls had a more consistent radius and smoothness, but obviously metal balls would be too heavy. Love it.
Agreed!! I was looking for alternative options but couldn’t find anything viable! Going to keep looking!
If I had all the tools to make stuff like this I feel like I would design it the exact way you do. I love the white clear and metal color scheme as well as the mechanisms
Respect 🫡
amazing work , good job , loved it😊
Thank you! Cheers 🍻🍻
Such a fantastic vid!
Appreciate it!!
great clock! love the loop! hope it is down to one sec alignment!
that's awesome. Great work
Thank you!!
DUDE, you make thee coolest stuff. That i why youre one of my favorite 3d printing youtube channels. Along with your amazing mechanical designs I love the vibes of your videos. I know i can come here for a drama-free video! :) thanks for the great content Jay!
Thank you!! I try to keep it fun here, glad you appreciate!
Wow. This is outrageous
Hahah just a bit 😅
I just love watching the two arms mechanism working together to lift the balls. Beautiful.
🙏🙏🙏👊👊👊
Not only is this a marvelous masterpiece but your energy and vibes are great! A truly great work of art and engineering! WOW! :)
Thank you!! Glad you can enjoy it 😀
THANK YOU for showing me motiongen!! As someone who works primarily in rhino this has LAUNCHED what im able to do
Such an amazing piece of software!
This clock is a showpiece. Most impressive. Honestly if I lived in a mansion I would want this as the first thing you see as you walk in. I am in love with it.
🙏🙏🙏
Amazing Work Jay! As a fellow engineer (Volvo Cars R&D, Gothenburg, Sweden) I really enjoy your creative process, innovations to combine multiple (often existing) techniques into something unique and also your really Awesome videography… which is a trait not all engineers naturally learn, so Extra compliments for that sir!!
Appreciate it! Its been a lot of work to get the video skills to where they are, and I don’t feel like theyre even half of what the engineering is! Haha thanks for enjoying my work!
Amazing.. !!!! It does need to be on display somewhere.
Open to it!
I love the combination of graceful lifting of the ball verses the rapid motion of each ball as it hurries down the track to its final resting place. 👏👏👏👏
I havent even thought about that! Love the perspective 🙏
Best build yet!
Appreciate that!
well done dude it is beautiful
Glad you think so! Thanks!
Looks amazing! Another impressive combination of art and engineering.
Thank you! Cheers 🍻🍻
The mechanism of the two arms is really cool!
One of my favourite parts! Thank you
This is amazing Jay. I would have to loved to see a longer format maybe including all of the mistakes or challenges you had to overcome
Thanks Mike! I might do a live stream to answer questions anyone might have! What are your thoughts on that
@@Engineezy Live streams are cool, my fav live streams from creators are when they are mid-project and want to show things or get ideas
That is really awesome project.
So far, I haven't seen anything like that.
I can't wait to see other projects.
:)
More to come!
Your designs are always so visually pleasing and elegant. Thanks for continuing to inspire those of us just getting going in engineering. Thanks for the Motion Gen tip too, I have used it quite a bit since you mentioned it that first time in that Short.
Thank you so much! Glad you’ve found value in Motiongen, pretty awesome bit of software
This is an amazing art piece! Should be on display somewhere!
Hahaha my parents basement doesn’t cut it?
I'd love a 1/2 or 1/3 scale version! I'm guessing I'm not alone. I'm sure there are people who would buy plans/files or kits to build their own.
Or the clock itself 😮
I love mechanical clocks, this one is awesome.
Me too! Thank you!
Great project and video. Really cool idea and execution.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching 🙏
Love the commitment to do a full timelapse to show the changes instead of just jumping to the times by setting the wheels and balls accordingly.
Do real time, 12 hours + and a huuuuge video file, for a minute of video.
Stage, 1 hour + for same minute of video.
😂 Props my man!
I found a coment without a coment from him
That was pretty amazing! The timing and gear calculations would have driven me insane! You turned time into a cool art kinetic piece of art!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible J!
Thank you!!
truly phenomenal!! Well done JBV 🤩
Thank you! 👊👊👊
seeing all the balls roll off the clock is like a reward for making it through the day
Absolutely! Agreed
@@Engineezy its even better when you are high on 5 cans of redbull and you just hear all the balls rolling and you know its too late to hand in your assignment and you wasted it all on nothing
Lol, you are just a very talented ingenious human. Amazing work 💯
Thank you so much 😀
Love the idea of this project. I think 🤔 just by creating alternativing colors for the balls like black or white or whatever you choose could make counting the easier without ruining the over all aesthetic of the piece.
Thank you! That’s an interesting idea! I’m having trouble visualizing if they would remain alternating, might be worth trying it out
thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for watching 👊👊
Guys give this man love already that drains the brain and peace of mind ❤❤
🙏🙏
Wow, this is truly a masterpiece! Perhaps adding some markings on your "clock" could make it easier for people to quickly read the current time?
Thank you! Definitely would help 😅
Amazing work! You've outdone yourself yet again! This one I really wish I could see in person just to appreciate the sheer complexity and craftsmanship of it.
0:41 Five times the *diameter.* If you want to add even more hype, say the new balls are *125 times the volume* of the old ones, since the volume scales by the cube of the radius. (Someone check my math, plsthx.)
Also, I'd like to give my own shout out to your sponsor. I just got an Elegoo Mars 4 Ultra, and it's amazing, but the biggest reason to buy from Elegoo is that their customer service is world-class. Which makes a huge difference, since stuff *will* go wrong sooner or later, and you don't want to be on your own when it does.
Hahaha love it! Its all about the marketing right?!
Это невероятно.. Друг, ты бесподобен. На протяжении всего видео сижу с мыслью о том, насколько тяжело было продумать каждую деталь механизма, да ещё и сделать это настолько хорошо
Thank you! It definitely took some time to get it all figured out- worth it in the end!
bro that little green contraption is really cool! you should turn it into a clock!
Definitely will consider it!
This is awesome!!!
Thank you!!
That 'thing'...should be in a museum somewhere. Come to think of it...there's an idea. Create your own display space. Live stream it so that your subscribers can check out all your various creations whenever they want to.
I’ve definitely thought about it, just need to find some investors!
The coolest clock I have ever seen
🙏🙏
This would make a great clock!
I was thinking that!
My favorite video of yours yet, and they're all amazing! I know you don't show us everything in between and how long this really takes you, so I almost want to see some sort of director's cut where all the mistakes and re-dos and outtakes live just so we can appreciate your effort all that much more. Such an impressive fusion of skill, humility, and perseverance!
My only concern while watching along was that I kept thinking back to the old desktop versions of these and how you were going a completely different direction with the control methodology for the gates and releases. Yours is awesome and functional, but entirely over-engineered (which might be intentional 😛). The old ones use an overflow concept, where the minutes "display" only has 9 spaces for balls with a secondary parallel path behind the display track that diverges right where the 10th ball would be. Therefore ball #10 tries to stay on the minute display, diverts to the back control path, triggers the minutes release gate, and becomes the first Tens display ball. Repeat etc for the 7th Tens ball and the 12th Hour ball (where the 12 hour ball triggers all 3 tracks to clear and leave the face blank again). The only downside is this usually requires a layout upside down of yours, with minutes on top, Tens in the middle, and Hours on the bottom, cuz gravity haha.
I could see this still working with yours though with a few modifications. I'm sure you could devise a way that the 9th minute ball mechanically closes it's chute cover behind itself, which solves the problem of the 10th ball being a row too low. Then the 10 ball (the first Tens spot) can mechanically release the gate on the minutes track below it. Copy past for Tens and Hours. That way you can still use a diverted track segment for the midnight/noon ball as it is zero and doesn't need to remain on the face after it clears the three gates and resets the chute covers.
Anyways that description got a lot longer than I intended but I hope you get the picture. It saves you all that complicated gearing and cam setup you have for the chutes and gates now, with the added benefit of making it a more "pure" time-based system (the 60 second cycle of the lift is all you need).
Okay promise I'm done now haha. Can't wait to see what comes next!
Appreciate that! Definitely one of my fav projects so far! And re those marble clocks, I took a good look at them when I first started this project, but really wanted to challenge myself to use the cam system- was a bit of a stubborn effort haha! Would’ve been way simpler to use and overflow system.
We need a livestream of this piece of engineering just working all day long. This thing is awesome!!
Haha! Gonna have to bust out the backdrop again!
Great design!
Appreciate it!
clean minimalist design love it
🙏🙏
Marvellous work Brother👌🏻🙌🏻🥰
Thank you!! 👊🙏🍻
Saw the new video title and before i clicked.
Man, I'm definitely gonna make one of these and pester for the files if je hasn't already posted.
Watches video:
Mourh on floor and just damn! That's big! 😂
If you're lacking in ideas and projects (because no maker ever has too many right, 😂)
You could redesign to scale down to be more produceable and desktop size.
Epic build!
Brilliant execution. you need some of that mirror paint from Stuart Semple at Culture Hustle.
That would be cool!
Just stumbled on your channel. Awesome content! Fascinating clock.
Welcome aboard! Thank you!
i think you should update the timing so it releases the singles after the ten is added that way there is a difference between the first and last few seconds of avery ten minutes (4,9 4,0 5,0 to 4,9 4,10 5,0)
Not a bad idea!
I would totally buy a flat pack kit and assemble my own clock at home. It would be a fantastic conversation starter!
It would indeed!
Dude! I am so impressed by you on so many levels!! You are a GENIUS, and your reasoning and methodology is beyond amazing! Keep up the fantastic inspirational work!!
Appreciate that! Will do 😀
