- Sure, you could work out, change your eating habits, or train more. But those tidbits have absolutely no place in this video. Self improvement has nothing to do with making your mountain bike faster for $0. So buckle up, grab a multitool, and enjoy the free speed!

If you have an ebike, removing the battery will make your bike significantly lighter
I have an ebike, and sometimes I'll take the battery out and put it on the luggage rack behind the seat to save weight going uphill.
@@flynnstone3580 megabrain over here, I aspire to your level of ultimate genius!
"And it will cost, zero dollars!"
@@yorkleroy5605 okay then, no more sarcasm for you.
Brakes don't make you faster they only slow you down
I cant wait to cut my dropper seat post down to save weight
Hacksaw will make anything faster for 0
Ya but I just took my seat out and sold it for $20 and now my bikes faster
I just cut down 20 grams that's plenty enough to be faster
@@Mr.Boost123i just sold the bike and got on a cab in the highway, never went faster
Lmao
I like how you lost your water bottle on the B-roll, but it was such a good descent through the roots that it was worth keeping.
Losing the bottle made the bike lighter and faster, zero dollars!
I noticed that too and thought it was a hint to how to increase speed hah
Pro move to reduce arm pump because the kinetic energy leaves the bike and not into your arms
Timestamp plz?

This video is great but I'm gonna have to give it a 5/10, because I followed all of the advice and I only saved zero dollars. XD

Damn Seth you might want to consider a channel for these great tips. Hacks you could call them, bike hacks.
Better yet Seth’s bike hacks
An intriguing idea for sure
The internet might not be ready for these new ideas

Personally, i think the best option is to drill holes in the frames. They design them to be very sturdy, so if you drill holes in it, it will lose a little bit of rigidity and a lot of weight!
(notice: my legal advisor has advised me to add a note to mention this is sarcastic and you should not follow this advice)
Maybe it’ll be more aerodynamic like a golf ball
Yes; strategic addition of "drillium" to a bike is a time-tested tradition.
can you make a random edit so it seems like you did that in hindsight? (im gonna del my comment when uve done it)
If you have a bike with good brakes, remove them to go faster too. Helped me to go faster to the hospital. Definitely recommend👍
Instructions unclear, I started with weight savings and now I have a unicycle
Little note on the sealant thing: it might only be half a pound, but it's half a pound of rotational unsprung mass, this means that it (in theory) has a much greater effect than if you just added or removed that same mass from the frame, even moreso from the rotational part, as this is mass way on the outside of a rather large wheel, though it will only have a real effect when accelerating or decelerating.
According to some data that is untrue. I personally disagree as I'm from the car world and I view it as a lightweight crank pulley or flywheel but the scientist said otherwise on a bike
@@mikeytekUnsprung mass only matters with suspension kinematics. Rotational mass only matters with smoothing out harmonics of an engine, e.g the flywheel and counterweights. Even on cars, an extra 5kg on each 4 wheels would do the same thing to acceleration and deceleration as an extra 20 kg on the trunk. I regularly see people mixing it up, and it's very easy to do so.
The mass in the formulas of both linear momentum and angular momentum are of the same power.
@@dauf69 Of course in both equations the masses contribute with the same power. But thats the thing: If you have rotational mass, you need BOTH equations! If you have rotational mass, it also needs to be accelerated linearly, thereby contributing twice. Thats why rotational mass has more effect than non-rotational mass.
For bike wheels, the outside of the tire moves rotationally at the same speed as the whole bike moves over ground. Thereby, weight at the outside of your wheels just counts exactly twice.
@@dauf69not quite sure this is true, if you look at the individual wheel, you have to account for 5kg of rotational inertia, but if you look at the car as a whole you still have to account for the 20kg of linear intertia
Dude, I bought my first mountain bike after watching one of your videos like a week ago. I've been binge watching all of your content since and I haven't spent any time on my bike lol. I love your channel, but I think I'm addicted to it. Everything you do is entertaining. You make everything super easy to understand, and it's all really fun to watch.
Great tips! I just would be careful with all the adjustments regarding feet/pedals and saddle. At least in my case, just a cm off causes me knee pain after a few minutes of riding. It is worth testing before commiting to a long ride.
I had the same thought especially after my trainer told me I need to put my seat further back to avoid knee issues.
This is like the best commercial to tinker with your bike and your setup on the bike! Love it ❤
Water bottle goes flying out at 0:19
Good eye! I realized when I wanted to have a drink. We went back and found it, luckily not that far from where I realized.
Hey, the drink wanted a go to the trail too!
@@BermPeakExpress But losing the water bottle reduced weight and made you faster!
This is funny because earlier today I watched the water bottle smasher video…

What a good general information guide from an experienced mountain bike to those not so experienced. I'm sending this link rather than trying to explain... Top job Seth!
Hey Seth. I’ve watched every flip bike episode 3 times. Can we get anew episode?. Thanks
Seth once again you’ve stepped up your games love the content
If $0 can do all that, imagine how much faster you could go with $5.
I love your videos mate, keep up the good work!
with the cleat hack you actually get more leverage from a further back position on the cleat but bike fit is going to give you better leverage than just slamming the cleat all the way back
I started watching the worldcup XC races this year and most riders will stop in the pits for a bottle of water and just dump it on themselves to cool down, but then i noticed Nino Schurter actually takes the extra time to kinda hose off his legs and feet and was wondering if he was getting more aero/weight advantages over the other guys. After this video I'm convinced he is.
Nino Schurter is an absolute master !!!
Cause he chilling
Not aero, weight. Try riding in heavy work boots
no nino is just faster lmao
🙄
I’ve often said in my shop, “Brakes will only slow you down.”
Love the videos Seth!
I loved the style of this video! Tips from the Trail.
Appreciated the humor ;). Thanks bud.
Haha! Love this Seth..thanks for all the tips.
Seth, we want more and more vids with your new hardtail!!!! looks super good
That thumbnail is amazing. And as always, great tips and well done!
great advice!
If anything (I tend not to, though, but these tips are definitely worth it), I want my feet to be in exactly the same spot every time. On flat pedals (my mountainbike) I have free adjustment, but if and when I'm clipped in (on my roadbike, but who's to say I'm never gonna change in the future) I really want my feet on the spot every time. Find and adjust when new, then leave for as long as possible. Trust and familiarity make confidence too.
That was extremely entertaining. Sound advice Seth but I definitely won't be deliberately going brakeless. I did once, needless to say the speed wobbles, the crash and the bandaids definitely saw to me loving good brakes. 😎👍
If you had clipped pedals on a fixie, you could arguably get away with it for light road riding.
As long as someone else bought the bandaids at least you still spent zero dollars
Very good points dude!
This realy adds up at the end!
pump up your tires to maximum allowed pressure and then some is my favorite hack. you do couple pedal strokes and it rolls for miles, so easy
I really like what you have to say about bikes and riding. We appreciate you
Good info Thanks why I come to ur videos!!!
Love that hardtail man!

It is a good day wen Seth posts can’t wait for my next ride! I’m a clip less rider so can not wait to try it.
Yep.
This was educational and HILARIOUS! You present information that a lot of riders might already know but in such a way as to make us scratch our heads in wonderment and absurdity but it’s also ‘Tickle me Elmo’ funny.

Just 20 mins ago I checked if Seth uploaded a vid and I wasn't getting notified.
And voila we get a new upload and notified! : ))

I wish you had a national Sales like a store in every state. I only would buy a bike from this point on from this guy. He is the greatest in the sport. He tells you like it is. That is rare and appreciated.
That's it!! I'm ditching the knobbies and running slicks from here on out!! 🤣

The problem with the big guys like me is if you put your seat too far forward or back it sometimes breaks the bolt or the seat tilts forward or backwards
Those advices are priceless
😅
Haha the face while rubbing the crisco on the frame.
I got a bike fit when I was a very active XC racer and both the fitter and my coach both said, put the cleats as far back as you can on the sole and go with that.
Forward towards your toes is potentially much faster. Moving them back removes an entire body part from the power production chain, which apparently is just fine with some. Really depends on if you are aerobically or anaerobically biased.
Actually every fitter will tell you forward cleat position is only good for sprints (example Sagan TDF) other then that, you loose exactly 0 speed after the tax.
@@BjaaC1 That blanket statement kind of contradicts the "fitter" title doesn't it :)
How’s it going nice video! I’m curious, how do you like those berd rims there are not a lot of review videos on the web regarding the hawk 30 rims i’m interested in purchasing a set, but I wanted to know how they were compared to a set of zip carbon wheels. Keep up the great work!!
I've watched this video 3 times already, just for the "...Zero Dollars" cuts. 😂
Thanks for the laugh Seth. 👍🏻
Man that face you made putting the crisco on your frame really got me. Hardest ive ever laughed watching berm peak
1:37 you can also invert the stem pointing down.
I'm a bit confused. Could you please recap the cost for all these upgrades combined?
You started to mention it towards the end and perhaps it is for another video… but another way to get more speed for free “given that the parson has some basic tools and knowledge” is to clean and and lubricate the major moving parts.
Cheap titanium parts exist too, tito titanium in China makes some truly outstanding titanium bits for 1/4 the price of bigger names. Great customer service too. They even do frames! You could build a full tito titanium bike for under $2500.
Hey Seth, we are in town from Bentonville and we are big fans of your channel. We will be at Kanuga tomorrow so come on by and ride with us if you are in the area!
Que buenas ideas, ya voy a cortar el tubo del asiento.
😂😂😂 the bonus zero dollar hack was hilarious 😂😂😂
Seth’s videos never miss
“Don’t get cute with me.” 😂
i am by no means experienced but a lot of these weight reduction points are i think overstated as each one isnt a lot of weight. The caveat is that the tire sealant thing is probably understated becauase that's weight removed from the outside of the wheels, which dramatically reduces their moment of inertia and makes it way easier to accelerate them
Finally, bike upgrades I can actually afford!
I’ve been experimenting with higher tire pressure recently and I gotta say, the bike definitely cuts through the terrain much quicker, it’s just a matter of keeping that right amount of grip when I lean the bike over
Bring back trail building and testing pleasee🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for tips. How to measure speed? Is there a phone app that just does it automatically for me? Should I also take into account weather? Equipment I carry with me? What more?
Extra hack: think your going faster, also 0$. Great video pal, keep it up and greetings from the Netherlands!
Seth, I've had bottles go flying off my hardtail when riding the chunk, and I saw the same thing happen to you at 0:19s here! It's driving me nuts! Lost 3 bottles this season! I'd love to see bottle cage test for a future content idea. The Lezyne sideloaders suck!
I'd love to see whether the trick of putting a chunkier, wider tyre on the front for more traction and control (trick for mtb) works on a bmx 20". I'd love to see it tested on multiple terrains; dirt jumps, pavement, bmx obstical course, and of course the trails. I figure this technique is already in use with dirt jumpers.
Sorry for all the writhing if you read through this.😅
It does work. I used to run a 2.3 Demolition Momentum up front and a 1.85 Maxxis Miracle out back before I switched to dirt. On dirt I ran the momentum on the rear until it was shredded and an Odyssey Aitken 2.45 up front. Once the rear was done I bought a second Aitken 2.45 and swapped the front tyre round to the rear so I'd get more wear out of them. With a pair of 2.45 tyres I'd run the rear at 45psi and the front at 38psi to have the rear effectively slimmer because it doesn't squish as much. Worked amazingly.
I literally typed how to make mtb bike faster minutes ago first time ever and I have seth have my back 😂
Thank you Seth for telling me how to upgrade my bike for free while the bike in the thumbnail is a one of a kind titanium framed 12 thousand dollar bike
You’re basically a scientist 👨🏽🔬
This was a cool video! There is something to be said about your heart rate being in a lower zone for the duration. I know a purty lady that insists that zone 2 workouts actually have huge benefits for when you go for the more strenuous workouts!
Hey Seth I got a question, I just went to buy some bars from a local bike shop(mine are bent) and when I got home I noticed the ones I just bought were bent too, bilateral on the opposite side the guy at the bike shop said that they were "take offs" and said they were never used. Have you ever encountered this with new bars not being square, plumb, un-bent???
I love this content! Your style of videos has been evolving through out the years. its amazing to see that youre still working hard on the quality of your videos!
Loves that mushroom clip, very beautiful
The bottle went yeet in the first 30 seconds
Good video. Here's one more free tip: Spend more time riding your bike. Assuming that you are doing it right; fitness, technique, and confidence should improve speed. * Your results may vary.* Please consult your physician and health insurance before beginning program. *No warranty or liability expressed or implied by above statement. *No money back.
Like these upgrades, this video and the laughs it provided cost me $0
Seth that rear shock isn’t locked out. You have to turn it so it’s pointing up to make the climb switch work.
My first means to improve a bike is to take the freehub off, clean it of the factory grease and slop in some 3-in-1 oil. It's thinner and offers way less resistance. Because it's a general lubricant used everywhere in my house it's basically free, I've got a few bottles knocking around anyway.
Is this going to make it a lot faster? No. But it does reduce required energy input which over a longer ride can improve the overall time. Certainly can up the volume of the freehub and that's intrinsically good.
Another one is proper set up. Take a few hours to get everything properly adjusted and aligned and do it often. As covered, suspension is a first port of call but so are things like your drivetrain. Over time cables can stretch and settle, this can walk everything slightly out and can end up costing a few Watts over time and can result in slow shifting. Get the seat height right for maximum pedalling efficiency, it's startling how many ride with the seat too low and it's really inefficient. In some areas, cleaning out a little bit of the factory grease can improve speed. Often bearings are overgreased from the factory to protect them while they sit waiting for a rider to buy them. That grease can provide excess resistance or even cling onto dirt. Don't get rid of all of it but taking between 25 and 40% of it out can really reduce the negative effects in the hubs.
Try to keep your wheels true or close. A slightly smoother roll helps increase efficiency. If you don't have a spoke key then an adjustable spanner or even a seat clamp can be used in an emergency but it's best to have the proper tool if you can, it costs £3-5. Okay, buying a tool isn't free but it's so cheap that over time it's basically a near 0 cost thing.
Okay weight weenies, this bit's for you guys. You can get your drill out in some places. You can remove material from headset spacers. You can cut a wee bit from the bottom of a fixed seatpost provided you maintain the minimum insertion, measure it first. My seatpost has 100mm minimum insertion and at full height my post has about 135mm inside the frame. I can mark a new minimum insertion 35mm higher and cut 35mm off the bottom of the post. That might knock off a full 50g from the weight!! Wow! I've seen seatclamps get drilled to remove weight but that's one to be careful with, it's not something I reccomend personally. The most interesting mod I've seen are drilled brake levers, a few small holes on the lever blade which reduce weight by 2 or 3g and improve grip on the lever. I've even seen brake levers which have been heated and bent (more often on BMX) to offer less interference at the grip yet similar mechanical advantage when using the brake. In fact, the Dia-compe Tech 77 was modified this way by BMX riders so much that Diatech/Dia-compe (now Cane Creek) made a version specially for BMX, it came in more colours and had a new name, the Dirty Harry. This reduced the number of snapped levers.
I miss the berm peak trails when will you do another video on it?
Great video 😅
