  • DIY Portable Monitor screen from non functional laptops, using recycled parts to keep the cost as low as possible. It not only performs really well, but it also looks incredibly unique & Portable too. Supports Almost everything, Inputs as (HDMI, VGA, AV) and it can also Play Media From your USB Thumb Drive.
    This Portable Monitors Just need's 5v which can be Powered by USB.
    Things Needed For Making Portable Display
    1.A Non Functional Laptop with Good Working LCD Display.
    2.LCD Controller Board
    (Search For Particular LCD Model Number or Leave Message to Seller with Image, Most sellers of the control boards allows you to contact them) Purchase at Bangood or AliExpress.
    3.DC-DC Step-Up Module XL6009
    4.USB Cable Any (Old or New USB Cable)
    5.Acrylic Plexiglass 3mm Sheet, Used as LCD Controller Box Enclosure (Its your Choice)

    Great video. I've noticed in similar videos that others use a Step-down module for their builds but I still don't understand the difference. Hahah. Thanks for sharing.

    The problem is always finding a cheap enough source. Perhaps other people know what they are but I haven't been able to find any locally and buying online seems too risky to me.
    Aside from that this is an excellent and short guide. Thank you.

      Just buy a replacement screen, they're pretty cheap for what you're getting.

    thinking of doing the same. i got really great laptop, motherboard is dead tho, but LCD is fine and working. Built my self Mitx PC but i want to have portable screen, they are really expensive and most of them suck.

      Hi Nicolas, I had already taken the measurements for cutout on CorelDRAW & got the laser cut for acrylic board from the store near to me, The display was assembled by me before making the video. Later i thought of making a video for my subscribers on how to.. so i had to again disassemble and reassemble it. :)

    ive see many videos on YT but nothing this simple.
    I would like to do the same but i dont understand where you soldiered the usb cable to the underside of board.
    how does that work? can it be done on any board?

      Hey welcome N thank you :) . & regarding - (i dont understand where you soldiered the USB cable to the underside of board) - Explained @ 2:15 (5v/2a USB input is where it has been soldered its only power source does not collect any data) the HDMI cable is been separately connected for video input) pls keep subscribed to my channel for more such videos.

    What type of battery bank are you using to power your board/screen? How much v/a output does it have. I have tried an ipad charger and its not enough.

      Daniel St-Jean Hi, im using Mi Power Bank 10000Mah which has 5V2A Out Put, you can also use Samsung fast charger or any other charger which has the output of 5V2A .

      Hi, it depends on the LCD display module mine did not require a extra power wires for LCD Back Light.

      @@RedPixels_ Because his screen has an LED backlight and not LCD backlight. Controller boards that support LCD backlit screens come with LCD inverter boards.

    very interesting.
    Hypothetically speaking, what would you do if you wanted to have both the original 12v option and the 5v option you've presented here? (to put it another way, what if I want to be able to use my car's cigarette port to run the monitor when I'm in the car, but I want the 5v option when I'm not in my car?) Would a switch be recommended?

      Honestly i woud not recommended using both, as i have not tried my self. its better to use the original 12v adapter.

      @@TheCyberWolves That's okay. I was just curious. =) Honestly, the use I was thinking of putting this to, 12v would probably be better in general. Although, it occurs I could make a removable adapter for use with 5v, and simply detach it when I don't need it.

    You can plug usb power on usb input in pc right ?

      Yes you can, but its always better to play safe i would always recommend you to use Powerbank or USB Adapter. Reason is its DC to DC converter gets heated very easily so there may be 10% chance's of damaging ur mother board usb. :)

      Nope its not available (but its simple you can take help of local electrician or electronic shop guy's help to solder)

    Is there any way to do it where all I need to do is connect 1 usb cable to my computer (like to power it like u did here but also to replace the hdmi cable) or would i be possible to get an hdmi cable plug one side into the monitor and the other side into a hdmi to usb adaptor and then some how combined the usb power cable and the usb data cable

      CyberWolves ok so I plan on making two of these monitors and connect them to 1 laptop that at the moment only have 1 hdmi port and 1 open USB port I was thinking about making the monitors powered like u did in the video and then plug them into a usb hub and plug the hub into the open port and for the hdmi I was going to connect one side to the monitors and the second side to a hdmi to usb adaptor and the plug the adaptors into the usb hub that has the power cables what do i think

    i want to plugin a raspbery pi 3 on this with mini keyboard and plug the raspberry on another power bank xd
    and the plan is to find a 17.3-21 inch screen that i can both use on my raspberry
    and a 7 liter portable tower that i wil carry around on my backpack xd
    i can custom make a carrier bag for the tower as well u know stuff like letting the exhaust breathe and stuff like that
    so i can just plug in my backpack for a workstation hahah.
    i was thinking of cutting down an uber eats bag and making it slimmer
    so tell me is it possible to power a 750W portable tower?
    with relatively portable car battery?
    or a stack of rechargeable lithium ion?
    and fit it in my backpack?
    and get a 3-4hr juice out of it.
    i know i am speaking sci fi xd
    but just curious
    but my plan was to design a portable desktop i can use between campus and accomodation
    with power adapters
    and then design a portable raspberry for using the screen for traveling long

      Asif Farid ill just reply to you in simple words. :) yes its possible to use Both and you can use Latest Mi Power Bank 2i of 20000 mah which has Dual USB Output So that you can power on both raspberry pi 3 as well as the lcd display.

    those monitor kits say you need 12v 4A, that's 48W, have you measured the real power usage of it? You can't get more than 2A from a USB port, that's only 10W

    The Controller board require 12V, 4A (as mentioned in the Controller board info)
    But the power-up module gives output 12v 0.8 A on input of 5v 2A. (As mentioned by AliExpress seller)
    Did you changed resistance of power-up ? Or everything works without doing any change in the Power-up module?

      They rarely require the full 4 amps.
      I've driven 3 different controllers and monitors that had 12V4A in the ebay description with a 12V1A psu.

      The panel cover. I have a lcd screen (took it from a broken laptop) but I need some sort of cover or case to protect the screen and its components

      Yann André yes you can easily get the replacement of the panel for lcd or you can just make your own custom made from acrylic sheet.

    Please clarify: Does your PCB only need 5V (factory default) or are you doing that with the step-up module (5V input by power bank converted to 12V output)? How long does the monitor run with a power bank and how many cells has the power bank (4 batteries of 18650?)
