+ Leka Mrkela I never saw Meazza or Piola and old clips don't do them justice and from what I have read Meazza was THE Baggio of his era. Baggio followed the tradition of superstar forwards produced each generation on the WORLD stage. from Meazza to Riva to Rossi to Altobelli. Totti and Vieri wrap up the tradition and since then Italy has not produced a forward on the WORLD stage as it was their tradition. Club level most they achieved, if that much. It was so poor they had to gamble on an unstable and super overrated Balotelli, and since him have not ushered out WORLD stage level forwards since Totti and Vieri. But Baggio was in a class of his own.

But my boy Totti was a complete mid like Gerrard, Scholes, Lampard... Baggio was better offensively, but I would take Totti over him anyway. Tho i am biased AF because Roma is my club! lol Wish I could of seen Baggio played... and even younger Totti and Del Piero (saw them on just over their prime and tail end of their career)... Fuck I miss Totti and De Rossi!

He had problems with quite all his coaches, apart Mazzone at Brescia, because of his injures and because most of coaches wanted him to play as a second striker, not as pure number ten. He played in a period when number ten was changed. Only Carlo Ancelotti had the honestly to admit that he was a mistake to refuse to buy when he was the coach of Parma club. When Baggio played in Milan with Capello, he was not in good condition and Capello often refuse to make him play. Yes, he was unlucky, in 1990 and 1994 World Championship, he could have won with Italy. If he didn't suffered all those injures, he could have became one of the first 5 players of all time.

@@jimmyfoot832 The fact he had under 60 caps (should have been 100+), many of which were off the bench, tells us that he was terribly underused at International level. Yes, he was magnificent when he did play, gelling the attack, providing the team with some imagination, and stepping up, always making the difference. What's ironic is that he was in much better physical shape in 1990 and 1998. In 94, he was already carry injuries heading into the competition, and then picked up another against Bulgaria. Factor in the harsh conditions and it was a miracle what he produced in the US.
He wasn't first choice for Italy despite being phenomenal for Fiorentina. He was dropped for the semi-final against Argentina in 1990, something which destroyed the momentum of the team (Baggio, Schillaci and Giannini had formed a terrific trifecta in attack). In 1998 he played second fiddle to a very out-of-form Del Piero. Despite this he had a fine tournament, and had he started against France who knows what may have happened? He wasn't called up in 2002, when he'd made a record recovery from injury to put himself in contention and had been in great form for Brescia - Arsene Wenger even stated that Baggio was the best player in Serie A at the time, at the age of 35. And how can we forget that he wasn't called up for Euro 1996 and 2000.

The main problem was not his injuries, the main problem was that he did not find "his" coach. So did Messi, who had "his" coach, Guardiola.
Many goals were given to him due to his skill, sense of the ball and vision of the field. And of course such a desperate desire to play football, not many men are able to go out into the street just after a cruciate ligament rupture injury after 77 days, he has already played and scored in Serie A. This speaks of the character of a person. For this he is greatly respected. Thank you Roberto for the matches that I watched as a child)))

Yes, at the age of 18 and on the eve of his move to Fiorentina, he suffered a terrible knee injury. He was told he would never play again. The operation consisted of a 4 inch metal bolt contraption being placed in the knee. What made matters worse is that he had an allergy towards painkillers, and was in absolute agony for a very long time and throughout his career. Just as he "returned" from that injury approx one year later, he suffered a relapse and had to have over 220 internal stiches in the same knee, and again without painkillers. Compared to the medical procedures today, the techniques back then were brutal. I believe he had six serious knee injuries in total during his playing career, and from one of them he made record breaking speedy recovery - he was fighting so hard to be back for the 2002 World Cup, his exceptional form at Brescia should have merited his inclusion, but Trapattoni cruely left him out.
