Pro Vs DIY Bluetooth Speaker Build!

  • In this video, I've partnered with Inventables to create some portable Bluetooth speakers! Each speaker represents an opposite end of the spectrum. One is a simple speaker that most DIYers could make in a couple of afternoons and the other is one that a pro might make. They both sound great, they both function the same, but one looks a bit better than the other. Oh, and one lucky viewer will get to take home the pro speaker!

      I prefer magnet to magnet as it's self centering, and if you use north on one diagonal and south on the other, you can make the facia repel if it's the wrong way up, which could help if the drivers are positioned off centre

    2 Tips from an audio engineer:
    you dont want magnets near the speaker cause the magnetic field will interfer with the coil.
    and those wooden grills are likely to produce some high frequent distortion. Make them thiner or better leave them out!
    Anyways great design!

    • @lio1234234
      @lio1234234 Před rokem +7

      The grills are going to cause all kinds of distortion, not just high frequency. Ideally you'd never use a grill, but these are particularly obstructive, not much to do about the thickness though...

    • @jonathanwogerbauer2703
      @jonathanwogerbauer2703 Před rokem +6

      @@lio1234234 in acoustics every object must be seen as a relation to the wavelength. For waves with long length (bass) the grid is invisible because of diffraction. Therefore you will not have any distortion.

      It's the mid and high frequencies that will be most effected by the wood baffles ,a single full range speaker will have a lumpy output at various frequencies that's part of the reason for multi driver array's but that's a whole new can of worms.

    I often use countersunk magnets and fit one surface mounted on one face, and the opposite face has them in a hole just slightly deeper than the two magnets together so they never actually touch ( you don't want fragments of neodymium coming loose if they connect)
    Another benefit of this is that the surface magnet gets pulled into the hole like a peg, which is really satisfing and keeps the facia rigidly positioned.
    Also, if you put a north and a south on the face and the opposite in the holes, you basically magnetically key the facia to only fit one way

    I like how youre worried about the magnets effecting the speaker
    but you seem to have no issue with the GOD AWEFUL speaker grill you haphazardly designed

    Very cool build, thanks for sharing! I recently took an old cabinet speaker and roughly wired in a Nest Mini to make a Retro Nest Maxi - but this looks so much nicer, inside and out!

    Butt joints are fine! Cus you'll be filling and painting or veneering. Glue n screw and don't be shy with both.
    Unless you use solid wood, in which case sound quality isn't your premium so make it as fancy as you like. 👍
