This week, Ginny, Mike and Tom shoot the electric breeze on a variety of subjects, including World Car of the Year, the long-awaited return of the Ford Explorer and Omoda's arrival in the UK . The team also answer listeners' questions to help them find the perfect electric car.
If you have a car buying question or want to be included in our postbag, add your comment below or message us at info@electrifying.com.
Every week, the Electrifying.com meet online to discuss all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we’re all having for our tea and who dumped who in last night’s Love Island. Between these heavyweight subjects, we also talk about electric cars. A lot. Probably an unhealthy amount to be honest.
And when we do discuss cars, we find out a lot. From industry gossip to the more mundane practicalities of electric car ownership, it’s the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we’ve been driving and deliver our own verdicts on the latest electric car news. We also like to have a good laugh at the daftest bits of anti-electric news that we’ve seen in the press.
We can’t promise that you’ll learn much. You probably won’t. But if you fancy 30 minutes of idle chat and gossip about the world of electric cars, we’re here for you. If you like it / hate it / think it’s too long or too short, let us know.

I've just done a 1200 mile road trip over 7 days from Manchester to NI and Ireland in my Q8 Etron. Tebay (Northbound) on the way up, destination chargers at the hotels, Ionity Carlisle on the way home. No problems anywhere. Public charging was lunch stop on the way up and a coffee stop on the way back. No additional time spent charging. The change in public charging over the last year, has been significant.

About to become a 3 ev household later this week, we already have a vw e up, was joined by an ORA 03 in March, and have now purchased a VW ID4 21 plate first edition on a very low pcp finance rate, it’s replacing the eup that goes back in a couple of months, we are loving the variety and have a very soft spot for the eup but it is salary sacrifice and has to go back but the ID4 is only costing an additional £30 a month with 2 years warranty and servicing included.

Can’t be doing with those bongs! I’m so grateful that on the Niro EV you can turn off the audible speed warnings and it stays off. It still shows the angry little red notice in the HUD, but I can put up with that.

Driving south on the M6 in my e2008, I wanted to charge at Tebay. The sign by the road said there were chargers, so I pulled off only to find they were all Tesla, which was kinda frustrating.
I got in touch once I got home, and I was told that you've to drive across to the northbound side via a small service road to reach the chargers for other cars.
There may be a sign, but I didn't see it - was lucky enough to have power to continue. Thought I'd share in case anyone gets in a similar pickle.

I just had a test drive in the new Mini e, and I came away very impressed.
What a fantastic little car to drive! The suspension is compliant over rough surfaces and always feels planted (except under max acceleration where the front end lifts, but doesn't scrabble for grip (on dry roads)).
It feels really fast and confidence inspiring, the"B" mode is really well judged, and actually allows one pedal driving.

We also have 2 EVs in our household. Both our cars (Vx Corsa & Skoda Enyaq I 60) combined travels about 1100+ miles per month and with our ICE cars a couple of years ago costs about £150 per month whereas now with EVs is costing us anywhere between £40 - £50 per month for the 2 EVs. Saving us about £100 a month which we're loving the savings.

Mike’s comment about changing perceptions in the EV world has, I think, great relevance to previous tech changes. I used to work for a TV manufacturer, we were regularly in the top 3 brands and consumers would only buy a Samsung or LG if if they couldn’t afford something decent. How times changed with the advent of LCD/LED TVs. Samsung is now No.1, LG 2 and my old employer has gone bust!

Why aren’t charging rates advertised like petrol prices at charging and multi fuel forecourts?! Especially those with a mix of charging suppliers, saw prices of 49p per kw for open tesla superchargers across from other suppliers fast chargers at 79p and the Tesla ones weren’t even being used by others when they could have been so they were all paying far higher prices. Why is there no regulation yet on charging prices?!

I noticed that Motorway services are now quite good for the first time in 3 years I stopped on the M1 at Toddington as the Google maps in the car said there was 6 available from 12 and sure enough there where.
Finally getting somewhere with simple stops.
Also noticed that Tesla has opened up a lot more superchargers - but boy are they in hopeless places often with no drink or toilet. How silly. But the prices are great.

Monday, we are going to the Citroen dealer and have a look at the first ë-C3 in the Netherlands.
That Cyberster will be the second 2-door cabrio EV, we know of that is for sale in the EU (usable 300km range).
Fiat 500E was the first (€38.000) and now a €55.000 MG.

My biggest disappointment with the Cyberster is that it's too fast. I'd really like something with the performance and handling of a an MX-5 that is big enough inside for someone who is 6'2", the Mazda isn't. Even 300hp is totally unusable where I live and just makes insurance.more expensive.

Having my Tesla Model 3 RWD is fantastic compared to my Kia E Niro 4+ especially when thinking of all the bings and bongs. Tesla does not force this on to me and works in the back ground rather than shout at me all the time.
In reference to the Tesla super charger team, we do not know if this is one of many teams, which is what I suspect. Also, the Tesla Superchargers are now being used by other companies, so maybe they are putting more reliance on other companies to fit them. the super charger network seems to have a lot of options covered, but would love to see more and more.

I think the Mini Aceman will do well and I believe it’s an EV only model. I never liked the 4 door stretched regular Mini. It just looks a bit wrong and the Countryman however, nice it drives, is just a little large. The Aceman I’d say hits the sweet spot, still recognisably a Mini but modernised and better proportioned as a 4 door with its crossover styling. Also big enough to be practical but not too big. I’m looking forward to Nicola’s take on how it drives?

I was curious to see your reactions on that side of the pond to E'loon's stupid decision to fire the Supercharger team. Here… we're pissed. He has undermined other EV's commitment to transition to the NACS connectors. I swear to Gaia that it was out of petulant jealousy: the director of that team, Rebecca Tinucci, was honored by Time Magazine a couple of months ago as one of the "top 100 most influential climate leaders." His fragile ego just can't stand for someone else beside him to be in the media spotlight. What a toddler!

No Mike, it’s not always about the monthly’s. Stop presuming that everyone wants to lease a new car, some people don’t. Some people, like myself don’t feel the need to change every couple of years, we buy the right car and keep it longer. If we are being adult about green issues it makes far more sense to keep our cars longer, not change every 2 years and say, it’s an EV so that’s ok. Think about the environmental cost of producing and shipping the car, not to mention the natural resources that are involved.

    • @PedalPowerPanther
      @PedalPowerPanther Před měsícem +1

I’m on the fence here. Yes we should all keep cars longer. However, if we’re in the fortunate position of being able to afford a new car every 2-3 years, then by buying a new car car, we’re putting our old, 2nd hand, more affordable car into the market place. That could prove to be greener than hanging on to a green car, and limiting the options to those on a tighter budget?

Technically MG was sold to the Chinese, by a consortium whose sole purpose was to make money. It's not like MG products were any good when under Western ownership, I've had 3 MG badged vehicles, and while they have character, they were a far cry from a quality product. The current range of Chinese MGs are miles ahead in finish and reliability compared to when it was under its original ownership

Why do car journalists persist in using Apple Carplay or Android Auto in preference to the embedded software? We want a proper review of the car including a full analysis of the installed software. I keep hearing cursory reviews of the Kia/Hyundai software saying that it cannot do this or that when I know for a fact that it can. Is the increase in cars making noises to warn everyone about possible issues down to manufacturers being petrified about being sued if someone has an accident?
