This week, Ginny, Mike and Tom shoot the electric breeze on a variety of subjects, including World Car of the Year, the long-awaited return of the Ford Explorer and Omoda's arrival in the UK . The team also answer listeners' questions to help them find the perfect electric car.
If you have a car buying question or want to be included in our postbag, add your comment below or message us at info@electrifying.com.
Every week, the Electrifying.com meet online to discuss all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we’re all having for our tea and who dumped who in last night’s Love Island. Between these heavyweight subjects, we also talk about electric cars. A lot. Probably an unhealthy amount to be honest.
And when we do discuss cars, we find out a lot. From industry gossip to the more mundane practicalities of electric car ownership, it’s the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we’ve been driving and deliver our own verdicts on the latest electric car news. We also like to have a good laugh at the daftest bits of anti-electric news that we’ve seen in the press.
We can’t promise that you’ll learn much. You probably won’t. But if you fancy 30 minutes of idle chat and gossip about the world of electric cars, we’re here for you. If you like it / hate it / think it’s too long or too short, let us know.

Hopping on from watching you on the fire stick to say my wife just said to me that an estate car is my default choice. This is true.
Thanks for fixing Tom's jumpy camera, didn't mean you to go to great expense and really am not bothered about production values, don't expect TV quality. It was just when I watch on my mobile the jumpiness was a bit nauseating. Cheers team, thanks for the mention again, keep up the great work.👍😁

Just purchased a 3 year old id4 from Volkswagen approved, it came with 2 years warranty and mot’s. I also was looking at the Enyaq, but had a soft spot for the id4 first edition, not as quick as the id3 we previously had but with my child almost big enough to no longer need a booster seat, having the extra space for general family life makes a lot of sense, it’s eating up the miles in comfort as have a daily commute that requires daily charging

Converting classic cars to EVs sounds like a great idea, but I hope they update the entire HVAC system, suspension, brakes, etc. as part of the conversion. I ran a 1972 Morris 1300GT as a second car in the 90s, and while it looked incredibly cool and made me smile on a dry sunny day, it was awful to drive for the vast majority of the year.
The heater relied on the engine's cooling system for warmth, so only worked after the engine had been running for 5-10 minutes. With no heated steering wheel or seats, and with a thin, tinny body, that meant winter driving required a lot of warm clothes, which gradually had to be discard along the way, then put back on if you stopped for more than half an hour. I had to wipe the windscreen if there was any condensation, as the demister relied on hot air (no air-con to dry the air being blown), or wait with the engine idling until it warmed up. And on a warm day with a bit of mist or fog then it was too hot in the car as you had to have the heater on high to clear the windscreen, even if it was warm outside.
The brakes were adequate for its 70bhp, but I'd be worried about the rear drums coping with a combination of EV regen and disks at the front without some form of upgrade. The hydrospastic suspension struggled with its 800kg, so any increase would make it wallow even more. And just about every bit of the cabin was designed to maim the occupants in the event of any collision.
I'll leave classic cars to those who want discomfort and danger when driving, and stick to my lovely, comfortable, modern EV6. Thanks.

    • @huwjones5879
      @huwjones5879 Před 18 dny +2

None of the classic conversions I've seen do much more than replace the ICE with a motor and batteries. The better ones upgrade the suspension to cope.
Converting an ICE car to EV is always going to be a compromise, and in the case of a classic it's really just to keep it on the road.
As we've seen from major manufacturers even the latest ICE model when made to an EV is compromised and nowhere near as good as an EV designed as such from the start.

Re: boot space on smaller ev's, it's not the capacity that's the issue. It's the practicality. I don't want an unnecesarily large car, just something with a wide enough boot space for my guitar or an opening big enough for bulky items when the seats are down for the occasional ikea trip/skip-run without playing a convoluted game of tetris. Love listening to you guys chat EVs - I've learned a lot from you! I am one of those people whose ordered a VW ID7 😮 and now feel I need to explain why 😂. For me, the Tesla brand image is unappealing, i'm not into bling or spangly design. I love travelling in a really well sorted, well designed car and after Vicki's review I felt compelled to have a look. It's a wee bit bland I'll admit, but it's enormously capable, big enough for 3 teenage sons and a dog in the back and solidly built. It won over the mainly smaller competition at the same price. (I couldn't stretch to an EQE!)

For a couple of years I dabbled with the very first Ford EV ( Ford Think from the year 2000) and at just 3metres long I could get my wheelchair into the boot! So small car, big boot - give it to me! Estate car, top choice for me, as I have dog and two kids, plus the shape seems to be leading to more efficiency than an SUV. I currently have a Passat GTE (With Kia Soul EV as other family car) but would consider an EV estate. It would need to have a tow bar option, for bike rack, and roof bars for roof box. Even the Passat is full at times!!!!

I’m sorry, I’m not convinced about the avenger, I only drove it once as a hire car. It was the entry level trim, didn’t go very far on one charge and it’s extortionately expensive for what it. For similar money you can get an EX30, a Mégane E-tech and likely an EV3, all of which are more compelling packages. Also the Fiat 600e is very similar to the Avenger plus cheaper, and I personally think that is a better car, if a little ugly.

BMW i4 has an opening sunroof. Std in USA. And this opening sunroof has a moonroof and powered opaque fabric shade. The panoramic glass roofs are nonsense, IMO, causing cars to artificially overheat and need more power diverted to cooling. What's the point of a literal greenhouse for your car. One of the many design trends the industry should NOT have followed that Tesla came up with.

In my opinion, estates are mostly boring add-ons for normal cars. In Netherlands they never were a thing.
Only for the rare occupations, like an old shoe salesmen that didn't know the world had changed in the last 50 years, the ancient photographer that needed all his stuff with him, or the odd people that needed to buy food for their 5 dogs, 12 cats and 19 hamsters.

Warn people that if they pay up front for a few years service package and the dealer loses its dealer status, you end up with a pre paid package tied to the garage and not to the dealer network😡 Is it wise to carry on servicing at a garage that’s no longer an Mg Dealer? Does it affect the warranty or tech support? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I thought I wanted an i5 Touring but I couldn’t talk myself into a 5m+ car that isn’t correspondingly vast in the back seat - I have tall passengers to carry. Nobody bought the Mondeo in recent years but they bought millions of Tesla Model 3 which is a medium sized 4 door saloon, and in looks not that dissimilar to the Mondeo. And BMW ship millions of 3 Series, another medium sized 4 door saloon. I think it might have had more to do with the Mondeo and its image as a Rep Mobile than anything else.
Estate cars are actually what families need, not a SUV, most of which, unless they are BMW X5/Range Rover sized, have less useable space than the Estate version of a medium sized family saloon. However Estates lack the "king of the road" driving position and for some odd reason are perceived as down market to what is often nothing more than an Astra/Focus sized hatchback on bigger wheels with jacked up suspension.

There will be massive scope in the future for aftermarket suppliers to reprogram out all the bings & bongs.

Just dropped in to say that maybe you think the EV9 is so big because you haven't spent too much time in the big ICE SUVs? As an EV to get those owners to #stopburningstuff it will shake up the segment. And as you say, it feels smaller when you're driving it.

None taken! I do like sporty cars - see the video and review of the Born. But they need to be one thing or the other. The Tavascan seems to be trying to be a jack of all trades and it doesn't quite gel. TB

Speaking of terminology it bothers me that there’s something called turtle mode in EVs. Don’t Americans know difference between a turtle and a tortoise The graphics in many EVs, definitely depict a tortoise.
Turtles travel many thousands of miles in their lifetime, the same cannot to said of the tortoise. It is more than a little ironic, that the Americans chose to misrepresent an animal, that is capable of such feats of great distance. It’s the tortoise and the hare, not the turtle and the hare.
But then Americans think they invented everything. They make words up, just to replace existing words within the British language, e.g. ‘like’ instead of ‘such as’; and ‘leverage’ instead of ‘enable’. Even their leaders, maybe especially their leaders are capable of idiocy - Bush’s utterance of, “The trouble with the French, is they have no word for cul-de-sac.” I don’t think they’ve ever forgiven their fore-bearers, for being colonists.

You keep saying ev sales but hardly anyone "buys" an ev they lease it for three years which is NOT good for the environment. How many used ev's are sold ? Used prices for ev's drop quicker than an Essex girls knickers.

Used EV sales are apparently very healthy in the UK currently. It’s the cost of new ones that deters uptake not the Daily Mail BS. We bought a top of the range 2 1/2 year old Peugeot e2008 at the end of last year at 50% of new RRP and are delighted with it.

I agree Ford is moving slowly. but I believe part of it is due to the changing policies in the EU and the USA, as well as they have multiple EV battery trails underway with a variety of battery companies (e.g. CATL, SK Innovations, Solid Power) Also, it is taking them a while to get the factories built and or retrofitted to build EV's in the EU, North America and China. But things are starting to look up. To quote Ford News this week, "The electric Ford Explorer is the first vehicle to roll off the line at the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center - a significant step on the road to producing a new generation of high-quality electric passenger vehicles for the region. A second EV, a new sports crossover, will be revealed shortly with production in Cologne starting later this year."
