    This week, Ginny, Mike and Tom shoot the electric breeze on a variety of subjects, including World Car of the Year, the long-awaited return of the Ford Explorer and Omoda's arrival in the UK . The team also answer listeners' questions to help them find the perfect electric car.
    If you have a car buying question or want to be included in our postbag, add your comment below or message us at info@electrifying.com.
    Every week, the Electrifying.com meet online to discuss all the important matters at hand. Such as the weather, what we’re all having for our tea and who dumped who in last night’s Love Island. Between these heavyweight subjects, we also talk about electric cars. A lot. Probably an unhealthy amount to be honest.
    And when we do discuss cars, we find out a lot. From industry gossip to the more mundane practicalities of electric car ownership, it’s the place where we dish the dirt on the cars we’ve been driving and deliver our own verdicts on the latest electric car news. We also like to have a good laugh at the daftest bits of anti-electric news that we’ve seen in the press.
    We can’t promise that you’ll learn much. You probably won’t. But if you fancy 30 minutes of idle chat and gossip about the world of electric cars, we’re here for you. If you like it / hate it / think it’s too long or too short, let us know.

    There was news earlier this year about a 2018 Model S in Australia that has done over 700,000 km. The first set of brakes pads were replaced at 450,000 km and the the first battery pack was replaced at 666,666 km (under warranty as back then it was 8 year unlimited km) . That sort of suggests the suggestion of the battery giving up or catching fire after 5 years is a little wrong

      They all sat back and let China take the leap of faith and they are paying for it. China bringing in Cars cheaper and now with build quality that’s fine. The European automakers think there is brand loyalty these days like our fathers saying….. “ I’m on my tenth BMW, I wouldn’t drive anything else” There is very little brand loyalty these days and it gets even less the younger you go. Worse still the younger generation don’t want Car ownership like my generation as it’s a absolute financial disaster for something sitting 80% do nothing these days. They would rather see the world etc and pay silly money for a car, pay silly money to insure and Tax before ripped off at the pump. Cheap Electric Cars could keep them.

  • @Flyingtwiglet

    Yes! At last someone has pointed out that cables in the boot sub-floor is a silly place to keep them. Yes fast chargers do have cables but if you end up somewhere that doesn't, a supermarket for example you do have to empty the load to lift it up. Yes forward planning can avoid this, but I do think manufacturers should think of a home that isn't dependant on an empty boot. e.g. frunk, under the drivers seat.

    Did I hear correct. Ginny spoke about holding up her crutch 😮.
    Good dealers.
    When looking to buy my IONIQ 5 I sent out specific questions to all the Hyundai dealers in Kent. Well the responses were so varied and polarised from good to bad.
    The winner was Marshals in Maidstone. The sales lady was the only response to answer all the questions. Of course she got the order.
    She kept me informed on delivery. From the original 12 months I got the car 5 months early.
    I think she was chuffed as it was the first Namsan model she sold.

    Howard’s MG of Yeovil were fantastic at explaining the world of EVs. With petrol, hybrid and fully electric they didn’t push either. Just gave you the facts, no pressure test drives and let you decide. Once you’ve driven an ev then they don’t need to sell you one, they sell themselves. The beauty of having an MG dealer in your town

    Great podcast as usual. Your comment on Ford. I have only ever owned Ford cars since passing my test, various models of Escort, a Sierra, Fiesta's and a Focus over the 40 years but wanting an EV, they do not have any that are affordable to the mass market any more, it looks like they are trying to go up market and forget the people that helped them grow, spending £50k for a Ford is definitely a no no in my mind, the so called Legacy brands are just ripping people off.

    My car now is a Renault megane e tech from Bristol Street Motors in York. Same thing, I went for that e tech and they sold me an e tech.

    If you have reduced mobility, now's the time to get in and out of a few different cars, e.g I got in and out of a ID3 a bit low but no problems, a ID4 however was a greater challenge! The F150 lightning a bit high but no problems, the Rivian R1T at first found it impossible to get in, I returned to it a couple of hours later and after a lot of head scratching worked out a way of getting in it, could never live with one.

  • @dcvariousvids8082
    @dcvariousvids8082 Před měsícem +2

    EV9 is more like a comfy van with seats. If Kia could up the range, it could make a decent airport transfer vehicle.
    I don’t quite understand VW naming. When the ID.3 was being introduced, reviewers were calling it a Golf, that wasn’t to be called a Golf. Now, (maybe) VW are going to produce an EV called a Golf. Is that going to be a Golf, that mustn’t be called an ID.3?
    I see little point in quoting prices for say a Chinese car in China, a Japanese in Japan, a Korean in Korea. When mandatory safety tech is different in counties and will affect pricing, plus international shipping doesn’t apply within country of origin.
    I doubt if the US government would allow Ford to go bust. Equally, I don’t think Ford is much interested in EVs, while they can keep producing high polluting ICEd vehicles, in the form of any vehicle tagged as SUV. As SUVs in the US, are treated the same as pickups, trucks & semis, i.e. lax/much less stringent emissions regs.
    Yep. Legacy dealers live and breath fumes. A few years back, I was interested in a Nissan eNV200 Combi. After much FUD from the dealer and a point blank refusal to even consider a test drive of a Leaf 40kWh, (which was emblazoned with “Book a test drive today”). He directed me toward an NV200.
    I’d already explained I don’t want just a van. He insisted I’d be better off forgetting about EVs. I walked away, when having enquired about a Leaf, he replied, that even if I walked in with the proceeds of a bank raid, he still wouldn’t sell me an EV. As they just weren’t worth the cost of ownership and had been proven to be unreliable. Ironically, a friend later leased a 30kWh Leaf from the same place. After 6mths., they returned the car and asked the cost of a new Leaf. The dealer said if they really wanted waste their money, they could buy the same Leaf they’d been driving but not to be surprised if it broke down in another year.
    Well they still have the 30kWh Leaf and it’s been faultless. But every time they took it in for a service, the dealer would try to sell them an ICEd car. And while they waited for the service to be completed, if customers walked in and enquired about an EV, the dealer would point to my friends and say things like, “They bought an EV and have had nothing but trouble” or “They’re only getting a twenty-five mile range.” My friends tired of this and now get the Leaf serviced in a different place. Plus they’ve added a Hyundai Ioniq 5.

    Hello Ginny & Nicola, To the whole team... Why do you think Stellantis would collaborate with a Chinese company, when everyone could guess that the Chinese company will just under cut them on the price of EV's, which is why the C10, which looks like a copy of a 'Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV' could be priced so low. I wonder how big the loss to the Stellantis group will be, during this time, and on the point of time, is the collaboration a short term or long term arrangement ?

Especially those with a mix of charging suppliers, saw prices of 49p per kw for off peak open tesla superchargers across from other suppliers fast chargers at 79p per kw and the Tesla ones weren’t even being used and all the others were full so they were all paying far higher prices. I suspect that car dealers don't like electric cars as there's little profit in them, and dealers make most of their profit on after sales servicing, which EVs don't really need.
    When I worked at a dealer (albeit 25 years ago) a major part of the operating profits came from servicing and repairs, but only a tiny amount came from selling the actually cars.
    This I believe is why dealers are reluctant to sell EVs, as they're going to be loosing out on regular maintenance income in the future.

    • @TroggyPB
      @TroggyPB Před měsícem

      You’re absolutely right. Same thing happened with home printers. Started off expensive then makers realised the profit was in “repeat sales” of ink. Now they’re dirt cheap.

  • @alistairl
    @alistairl Před měsícem

    The Westmorland family also operate Cairn Lodge Services in Scotland - not particularly relevant in the past to this audience but I had an email recently saying they'd finally installed EV Charging there too. Up till now it was just a great place for a meal and an excellent shop (but no ducks like Tebay).
    On another topic - a bit of an industry one but I've been a bit of a loyal VW driver for a few decades and the salesperson I dealt with last was pro-EV but the incentive from their side is a bit strange with the change to Agency model for just their EV models meaning they can't negotiate on the new Volkswagen ID cars. I like that pricing is consistent but I don't like that my loyalty to the local dealer is pointless and that they have a two tier arrangement between Electric and ICE cars.

    • @geoffreyjones6019
      @geoffreyjones6019 Před měsícem

      Re second hand values and insurance I’m pretty sure they’ve covered both of those in the past and as far as H2 and ammonia go there's not really anything to report, closure of the handful of hydrogen refuelling stations I suppose but that wouldn’t make for scintillating content.

    • @jonwragg3822
      @jonwragg3822 Před měsícem

      Hydrogen requires approx 3kWh for every kW hour of energy output. Ammonia is made by combining Hydrogen and Nitrogen using a catalyst, so uses more energy. Put 3kWh in a battery and you get nearly 3kWh back. There is no point using Hydrogen or Ammonia in a combustion engine for domestic vehicles. Add to this that ammonia stinks.

    I have been a Ford Fan for over 30 years, but just recently they have been making decisions that don't suit me (personal opinion obviously).
    Naming an SUV "Mustang", and probably calling another "Capri"?
    Then killing off their hatchbacks, which I believe Ford Europe excelled at.
    So my current Focus ST may be my last Ford. Hoping Hyundai can make a smaller hatch like the Ioniq 5N.

    I drive a Cupra Born. It looks great, drives great, is a great place to sit. But, the software is an absolute car crash; it really lets the entire car down and I can't wait to get rid of it. It's such a shame. VW have had years to sort this out now, but just haven't. I hear the newer models have the newer software, but that still leaves thousands of us struggling with even basic functions. Their actions imply that they don't care about current owners. It's also been back to Cupra 5 times in 18 months with different problems; headlight and controller died, water in the boot well, stuck charge flap, clicking noises when turning, constant fogging problems. Because of all of this, I won't be buying a Cupra again.

    It's not a very valid point about the AC charging cable being stuck under the rest of the luggage during a long journey. If you are using an untethered AC charger on a long journey then you are stopping for hours so it's probably a hotel or holiday let so you've taken the stuff out

    Car salespeople tend to have little to no interest in EVs in my experience. I find they know less than I do and zone out when I start talking about efficiency etc.

    It's ok buying cheaper ev's But then you have to do with the issue of public charges When you can't charge from home they cost a lot more Then say tesla The government are taken their Time To get a grip on the prices because they are making a hell of a lot on all the VAT, If Tesla can do it right? Why can't everyone else after all these years What do you think

    Stellantis bringing in cheaper Chinese EVs. By the time they get to the UK, they'll suffer all the import and tax duties, making them just as expensive as their own vehicles, £30k for a super mini with 200miles of range isn't going to convert anyone, great video though.

      Not necessarily. A recent EU study found that even with a 50% tariff the Chinese brands could make more profit in Europe than China. I think the Chinese brands so far have had little incentive to price low. Stellantis and Leapmotor (who don't sell particularly outstandingly in China) might have a bit more incentive to price low.

    I don’t know about journos, but UK punters seem to have little to no interest in BYD. Hopefully BYD sponsoring the Euros may shift perceptions.

    I see BYD being the Toyota of EVs. Boring, all look the same, predictable, reliable with a strong following. They'll be the EVs that little old granny Mavis will drive to church at 40km/h in an 80 zone on a Sunday morning.

    Why aren’t charging rates advertised like petrol prices at charging and multi fuel forecourts?! Especially those with a mix of charging suppliers, saw prices of 49p per kw for off peak open tesla superchargers across from other suppliers fast chargers at 79p per kw and the Tesla ones weren’t even being used and all the others were full so they were all paying far higher prices. Why is there no regulation yet on charging prices?!
