I first heard about Emma Chamberlain when a friend mentioned her to me in passing, told me that it would make a good video and there was a lot of content to discuss. I encountered here again when I was making my Beauty Community video, I was doing research of people who were involved in it, and she came up, now I didn’t include her in that video because I didn’t really consider herself necessarily part of that community, but she was working with individuals like James Charles and so I stumbled into her, I knew that there were a lot of videos being made, and I was like, alright, well she looks like a fairly regular lass, you know, whatever floats her boat.
There were more videos, and more videos, and I didn’t know what was happening, but now I finally had a bit more time freed up, I decided to look into it because now, with a bit of research I can fairly affirmatively say that this is a very interesting case. So, Emma Chamberlain is a 17 year old Vlogger, which you know is incredibly depressing but hey who cares, definitely not me, I don’t care. Sigh
Anyhow, she started her vlogging channel last year, and vlogging is an incredibly saturated genre, I’ve had friends who tried vlogging and it didn’t work out for them, mainly because I think it’s so hard to define yourself with something that like 99% of other people have, the only thing is that I do receive the impression that a lot of people enjoy vlogging, which probably explains the numerous creators, I mean, in a way, if I could do something like that, I probably would, one day, my friends, The Vlogging Opinion will I’m sure be a reality…
But Emma Chamberlain isn’t just any vlogger, in fact, many have branded her the anti-vlogger, and I think that’s a really interesting way to describe her, you see, her brand is definitely unique, and it’s clear why her ascension to the top of the CZcams totem pole was so rapid, she has this very sardonic tone that doesn’t really fit in with the normal CZcams vibes.
There has been this narrative drummed up recently that many creators themselves have fallen out of touch with the desires of their viewers, I’ve heard it increasingly of recent, and honestly, on one hand it’s a sentiment I agree with, particularly with that in the vlogging industry, but on the flipside I also feel part of that change has been undertaken by the audience, the shift in general sentiment, rather than the creators necessarily, that’s just made their ploys more transparent, on one hand, fame definitely pushes people out of sphere, but I think people are just increasingly aware of it. Emma Chamberlain definitely plays into that self-awareness, with the sort of snark and sass definitely needed, and we’ll explore the success very soon, but it does have its flaws.
And in the last few months, as noted Emma Chamberlain’s been in a bit of hot water, drama, after drama, after drama, firsty for a merchandising situation, and then for behaviours that show a double standard that didn’t match the attitude of her old content. This in a way, goes hand in hand, with a lot of the rise of commentary on these creators, we’ve definitely become more critical towards the vlogging community, this is for better, and for worse, as documented in my previous videos, on one hand it pushes the community for higher standards, on the other hand I think sometimes the criticism can lean into unreasonable territories, and at the end of the day it’s important that we, as creators have some sort of gauge on our own criticism.
I’ve often clashed with fellow creators over the notion of criticising our peers, because in many ways, a cohesive community is a functional one, and doing that is often seen as burning bridges, but at The Right Opinion, we always come equipped with a molotov cocktail, so cheers to that. There will be sometimes when I agree, sometimes when I don’t. Today we participate in that exercise of critical thinking because Emma Chamberlain has been the subject of extensive criticism, that itself should be brought into the light and scrutinised, just like Emma Chamberlain has been.

My only real issue with Emma is that she constantly complains even when she’s doing something that anybody would find fun and is expensive. She recently flew herself to New York on a whim and spent the entire video sitting in her hotel room eating and complaining. She also went to Hawaii and complained the entire time.

I remember the first few videos. Loved her. Thought she was actually relatable to a degree though she had a LOT of independence for a girl her age. She seemed so aware of how often people change when they move to LA and regularly joked about it, how she would never become one of those people. So much for that. He *expressly* states that she acts exactly as she always has -- just that her circumstances have changed. It's kind of inexcusable how poorly you understood this whole thing. It also helps to actually watch her videos enough to have an understanding of her persona -- especially considering it has been her journey from 16-19.
She's earned everything she has gotten -- she worked hard to create a very effective vlogging style. It's painfully obvious she has done very little to maximize her earnings or fame, and is going to do what she wants to do primarily by her own terms. Most people sell out, and their relevancy wanes. She's almost at 10 million subs -- and has compromised nothing in the process.

Chamberlain is just normalising and selling mediocrity. This is why she is so popular. She incarnates the "it doesn't matter/why not/I can't be bothered mentality".
It was Nietzsche's idea that mediocre people needed mediocre works and great people great works and thus mediocre works were so numerous.
Oh and being relatable is the cancer of our society. Every mediocre thing that we do is okay since everyone does it. No models, no aspirations, nothing.

when your brand is “relatable content” on CZcams, and you get big, because, hey, everyone is wants to watch someone that they relate to and admire who is just like them, you can’t take that brand to your new life of wealth, it just doesn’t work that way. Nobody identifies with you anymore & if that was the only thing going for you, then you essentially lose people’s interest, your likability and trustworthiness, and nobody cares about your rich CZcamsr life-you’re just like every other CZcamsr now
I would argue that Emma’s hatred for the system has only been seen when it doesn’t work for her (school). Dwight, on the other hand, loves the system because he can usually use it to get his way and becomes distraught when he can’t. Both seem to see the system for what it is, to a degree. The important distinction between them is that Dwight is much better able to make the system benefit him than Emma is.
I'd argue actually Chamberlain also plays the system because of her success on CZcams, she channeled her hate of the system, onto the system that brought what she stood against (happy next door vloggers). Maybe not on Dwight's level, but shes clever enough at least to cater to what she has identified as a previously unexplored market.

She actually strikes me as kind of lonely.
When I scroll through the trending page I'll always watch a Chamberlain vid if it's there, and there often is.
She's funny, I think genuinely self-deprecating, and though I agree it can get a bit overbearing, her skills as an editor are impressive.
But one vid I watched of hers recently showed her going to a spa by herself. Another vid recently showed her going to New York by herself.
Sometimes she has supporting players. But usually it's just her doing something like cooking...by herself.
I remember one vid last summer she got a cat. She said it was because she was lonely.
Maybe the crown weighs a bit heavy these days. Who knows. I think she seems like a decent, intelligent kid, and a gifted storyteller. One of the few CZcamsrs who I believe is likely not subhuman trash. I wish her well.

I’ve never understood watching vloggers. I believe it only breeds jealousy and a false sense of reality. What’s fake or staged is presented as real. You only see people at their best, or get fake positivity messages that anyone with a brain can see through. None of these people should be looked up to. They should be put on the same level as reality TV people. They’re literally only here to entertain us, nothing more. They’re no different than a dancing cat video that makes us smile or laugh. This is what kids need to be taught
I agree with that but keep in mind that these type of contents bloggers meant for young audience and the young audience want to see something like superheros and something more like paradise kinda thing yeah not all of them but the majority of them they are not adults like us facing everydays struggles with saddens , pressure and anxiety keep in mind that they are such kids ik one day they will wake up on reality but until that happens let them be innocent and happy
I follow one vlogger and that's bubzvlogs. She is a former beauty youtuber and then she got kids and now just shows her life. I like watching her because she seems real and also has a great attitude for life. She is also a grownup and not a teenager.
Some of the vloggers (usually not the big or popular ones) are real people who vlog about their real thoughts and feelings and struggles. I like listening and it’s refreshing to hear real people be so “raw” with their feelings instead of trying to play a narrative or hide their real emotions out of fear of being vulnerable (which is a reasonable fear since people can be so cruel). It’s less lonely sometimes when I watch these small, rare type of vloggers.

This reminds me of the episode of bo-jack horseman where they are talking about LA. They basically say its shallow and terrible, and that feels great. I imagine, once you're in that setting, it becomes a coping mechanism to pretend that things like fashion really do matter, and by participating in it, you're doing right.

I think this is similar to Bobby Burns going from hating Shane Dawson's content, to working for him and completley changing his content to be more like Shane's. Sometimes envious people do this. For instance, an obese person might insult someone thin out of jealously. They feel they'll never be that way, so they might as well try to convince themselves they don't like that lifestyle as a way to cope with / get rid of their envy.
However, if they were to one day be thin, they'd put aside their previous opinions. Which would look like a drastic change in opinion to others, when in reality that's just always been something they wanted but never wanted to appear jealous.

@@romy8792 you'd probably attempt to stick to the same thing that got you famous, while also trying to incorporate other factors like a massive swell in audience and money slowly. not all at once - as your popularity grows, you'd try to spice things up but not too much all at once. stick to the basic formula and add up.
other teenage youtubers are doing it - they'll continue to go to school and university. fame, so far, hasn't gotten to their heads and they want to continue on the life they chose.

You can really see it in her eyes and personality just from the few clips we see in this video.

I don't know who this person is, or why this video was even recommended to me so I'll just say this: I always feel really sad knowing that some of these young kids are gonna grow up with little to no skills or knowledge beyond final cut pro and hash tagging. When the well of money runs dry (and it usually always does) and they no longer have the built in bank account of 6.whatever million subs, it will be hard for them to cope and deal with the real world beyond their cameras.
I hope that she's investing her money wisely.
honestly I think you're underestimating just how much these youtubers are making. We're talking $10,000 per million views and that's before brand deals, appearances, merch, investments etc. Emma has around 700 million views, thats $7 million she's earned off youtube views alone (give or take a couple million due to her not being monetised at the beginning of her channel). These people are becoming multi multi millionaires within months of starting channels. She/they genuinely will not need "skills" like normal 17 year olds would. All emma needs is a solid accountant to keep her right and she'll be set for life even if her channel falls off in the next year or so (which it wont). But fuck it, fair play to her, she will never have to work a day in her life, no shit job pushing paper for someone else, at 17 she, and her family, have escaped the rat race, which i think is highly commendable.

Sure they have all the money they could ever spend, but they also completely disappeared from the lime light and the couple times they do appear here and there they just seem extremely unadjusted. If you have earned every penny you could ever need before you're 25, how can you find meaning and motivation for what's to come? Fame and money at such a young age is incredibly dangerous and suffocating (I would imagine)

Whatever you think of Emma Chamberlain, she's clever. She's the natural perversion of that dreamboat-next-door trope, as her sardonic persona is so much closer to a real person actually acts. She obviously has a great work ethic and a head for the business side of things, but the damage control of her merch really did reverse that. It's hard to have that respect for someone's genuine aura after they mess up and have to clutch at straws, no matter who they are. She has become what she once mocked, but that's okay because her humour can evolve alongside that. From what I can tell, it has. The introduction of more resources to make her videos interesting does harken back to that bedroom vlogger turned mansion culture, but she's figured out how to make that a shared experience with her audience.
I think that's why it appears she has changed, along with the move to LA. In the same way that Dan-and-Phil era vlogging fell through, she can't simultaneously remain a relatable character and a successful person. Whilst her content isn't my thing, I maintain admiration for how well she balances the two. She's so young and yet already so influential, and I think she represents the kind of genre-straddling content that the new generation of CZcamsrs have to use to survive. Someone will figure out the right combination of gaming, vlogging, commentary and reddit safari soon enough, and then Emma will be quaking along with the rest of us.

No. No on every account. People are not instinctively assholes to others, as doing so renders you deservedly hated and alone. I love this kind of analysis. I have never really related to Emma chamberlain's vlogs but couldn't put a finger why I didn't really care for them. I am not that interested in a nihilist/hedonist perspective, so thank you for giving me the vocabulary to think about content more critically. Despite my personal preferences, I still respect chamberlain -- she's very intelligent and a good creator to have on the platform.

Emma always was the type of person to take advantage of the platform to make money without caring too much about what happened. She was always a regular person that's careless introspectively and just wants a better life. There was no humbleness or anything implied there. Emma's just another not-spectacular person with spectacular savagery who ended up just performing more and more after time, especially with her circumstances improving. And turned out she was always "like us" not because of her poor circumstances or being "real" but because she's salty and beset by a typical mix of angst and ennui...despite her life not at all being proportionally worthy of spite and, well. Being a deeply privileged person.
TBH, I don't even get how tf a person can have so much energy to be that sassy and fed up with the world anyway. That already makes her impossible to relate to. @_@

I'm the same age as her, and there were quite a few people at my school with that attitude and sense of humour. While they were good for a few jokes and okay to know as people, I couldn't be friends with them; it was too draining. They were constantly negative, ready to rip into and laugh at anything, which lead them being a bit toxic to the people around them. I couldn't watch her videos, as it would be a callback to that toxicity I was eager to avoid
I get that a lot from her, but for me, she was a missing piece of a puzzle for me, a breath of fresh air, to me she felt like an everyday friend and that's why I watched her. My friends aren't always supposed to make me laugh, I'm friends with them because of their personality.
