When I was a very small commentator, I made a little video called Matt Hoss Could Win, in which I expressed my feelings on his whole lawsuit and how in fact he could be successful, at the time Fair Use was still a very untested concept, and there had been cases in the past where creators had lost against claimants, so I was especially sceptical of how some out of touch court might handle the case, I think it was a justified concern, and at the end of the video sister snapped and went off on a memorable rant that today would make such a typically placid individual like myself cringe.
That video was really the first taste of any success I had as it amassed approximately fifty thousand views at the time, and I was pretty excited, I mean what would this spell for an aspiring commentator like myself? Well, basically nothing for another year as all my videos afterwards didn’t really do much, but I guess today, like Chris Martin once said, we’re going back to the start, because I do find Matt Hoss a fascinating bloke.
Matt Hoss’s channel is known as the Matt Hoss Zone, he did used to have an Instagram but that’s gone, and he has been relatively inactive on all platforms where he expresses his distaste of Donald Trump, and promises his inevitable return to the followers who are eagerly awaiting another masterpiece from the maestro himself. As a creator he is fairly established, running on the platform for a few years, with a fairly respectable backlog of content, his description reads: “Original comedy, action, horror, and fantasy short films. With electronic dance music. From the mind of Matt Hosseinzadeh.” Hosseinzadeh being his full last name, which you know he has mercifully shortened so I appreciate that, it’s going to probably knock around 10 minutes off this video. The original comedy, action, horror and fantasy short films, were a mix of him picking up girls with his mad parkour, and vampires, I mean that’s a simplification, but I think the emphasis on his description is “Matt”, there is no other way to describe his channel, other than it is Matt Hoss, unfiltered Matt Hoss. Like The Room was unfiltered Tommy Wiseau. This is where h3 are introduced.
Most people know how the story goes, that basically Matt filed a civil action against h3 under the premise that their use of his content wasn’t fair and defamed his character, h3 disputed this, and this then escalated to the courts, fortunately this time round, the judge then, Katherine Forrest, the absolute legend, ruled in favour of the Kleins, it was probably one of the most famous motions and it was really heartwarming to see an often divided community uniting for the cause of something that transcended the differences.
Matt Hoss, the man at the centre of the lawsuit, became the sort of Disney Villain of CZcams, he himself was a content creator, and thus the lawsuit felt very personal. I spoke about this in the Smosh video, but often when businesses file lawsuits there is a lack of accountability, we’ll hate the business, but they have no personality to hate, they have no face to lambast, Matt Hoss put himself at the front and centre of the controversy, and there were very few people who were willing to defend him, he didn’t set himself out there as a likeable character.
He often came across as highly egocentric, and narcissistic and people tended to hone in on this, people hated him for it, and when videos came out, they were very critical of Matt Hoss in the moment, but no-one really asked why he did it, and in a way, when the situation is transpiring, I wouldn’t expect people to, the stakes seemed very high and theorising over motivations when they weren’t exactly relevant to the outcome seemed unnecessary, but I feel like now the time has passed, and we’re all on the Tubes, just chilling, like the fellow kids we are, I feel maybe we have time for a discussion, because as I said, I really do find the character of Hoss a very one.
I think many people at the time just saw him as this delusional reactionary, completely high off his own hubris, and with this image in his head that the persona that he had crafted in his content had been completely undermined, and you know when you look at the evidence, it’s one hundred percent a credible point of view, and one that I may even agree with to an extent, but I want to have a discussion, because I think there was a level of calculation that many people didn’t pay attention to, and I want to watch his videos so we can perhaps understand the mind, and motivations of Matt Hoss.

metallicarabbit I disagree, TRO had the right idea when he guessed that Matt purposefully sought out hate to help build his case.
The main point in Matt’s lawsuit was that H3 damaged his brand by making that video on him. What better way to prove that than to show examples of defamatory comments by H3 fans? The thing is, he needed more to help his case more. That’s why he struct down some random video. It would garner the quickest and harshest reaction he needed to compile for the case. He also documented the hate comments in a video of his own, perhaps to bait out more or to use it in court somehow.
The guy knew he was grasping at straws, so he tried every resource he could to keep his flimsy lawsuit together.

I feel like you give Matt Hoss too much credit; it's well known CZcams promotes channels that appeal to children, so he made videos that edgy 8 to 15 year old boys would love. When that was taken away from him and he was deemed uncool by the h3h3 (who teenage boys LOVE), he tried to emulate Ethan and Hila with commentary videos. He just seeks to exploit ANY CZcams audience, hoping to gain some sort of positive attention. This is a man that pays young women in his videos to kiss him, mind you; regardless if 'Bold Guy' is a character or not, Matt Hoss is the one hiring and directing these women to get physical with him. All of his actions show delusion and entitlement. I just can't imagine any intelligent person going through with that lawsuit, thinking they would be able to have any internet career after, let alone win.
At the time it was very possible that he would've won. Most judges didnt really care about fair use, it was a shaky argument at best with the time. If H3H3 didn't get a lawyer who did actually care and pay attention to the fair use laws they would have lost.

So he's a calculated mastermind YET he took another channel to court not knowing if he would win or lose and when it started to look like he was going to lose he panicked and tried to play the victim of harassment as a last ditch effort instead of just dropping the case? Unlikely. It's more likely he got mad when someone with such a big following made fun of him and made him look like an idiot when his channel was already slowing down and his ego took over.
He's not some genius who plans every move while playing 4D Chess. He's a guy who thinks he's amazing and that has an ego the size of the Twin Towers who instead of taking it like free publicity(which is what someone who plans every move might do) , and maybe did some kind of response making them look dumb, he jihaded his own carrier and went down like the Twin Towers.
This is why people should be prepared to take a huge of criticism. The dumb fuck would have been living the life making shitty videos and having decent viewership. Instead of riding out the big wave, he went out faced head-on and not surprisingly drowned. He should've accepted that his content is just some cult egdy teenage bullshit instead of pretending it to be some kind of masterpiece. A world where the fuckheads are confident and the talented are cowards.

Jason Edson agreed 100%. It does seem like he has some ulterior motive but no potential endgame supports this. You’d assume he just did it for the PR (good and bad) as he’s obv a narcissist and wants the attention, but his actions after filing the suit don’t support this. It doesn’t make sense that he’s trying to protect his incel fanbase because each move he took further comprised this with the massive PR hit. It was very clear in the beginning of the suit that there was no going back to the old days for him so in the end I think you’re right- he’s just a guy who thinks he’s smarter than he is. It may appear he has a grand master plan but he’s really just a self-centered nerf herder who’s out of his league.

The documentary style video isn't something that I can find from other channels, I'm glad that it has been kept up this long as opposed to the more political niche which was rather overdone.
Fredirck Knudeson has some pretty similar videos in style. However the topic and tone are way off. If your into a more depressing vibe I'd say its worth it.
If you like this in-depth documentary/video essay type content, Down The Rabbit Hole is another channel I found recently that puts up some really nice stuff. He talks about a lot of infamous Internet topics, similar to TRO

I absolutely think Hoss saw his characters as an extension of himself which is why he became so incensed at H3H3's unflattering commentary, or at least it was commentary that he saw as unflattering. In reality, while Ethan did make fun of him and refer to him as part of cringetube, he also seemed to have a grudging admiration for his shtick. So it wasn't all bad. However, to someone like Hoss, it was devastating. The smug, arrogant way he spoke about the lawsuit demonstrated that he's an egotistical narcissist. The reality of his life however, is that he's a middle aged, part time pizza delivery guy with no chin, which is why under the surface, like many narcissists he's actually quite insecure.

Regardless of his channel or content or how he wanted it to be perceived, he handled the criticism poorly and was rightfully punished for it. So, I got Matt’s content as an ad on my home screen. Ironically, the Bold Guy vs. Dream Girl episode with Anika. Guess he’s attempting a comeback. I think Anika got it spot on for his demographic. I was scrolling through the comment section on the infamous Parkour Girl video just to see what it looked like post lawsuit, and it’s basically a ghost town. He’s hearting the very recent comments, some from even a day ago.
I also had the videos promoted to me as “Comedy Zone” on the ad, which suggests to me that he may be attempting to rebrand a bit? I could be wrong.
I definitely felt violated by having the ad show up. Thankfully the algorithm saved me and your video popped up in the recommendations in the Next Video spot.

Good analysis but I'm going with the previous narrative of him being a narcissist with anger and self confidence issues. Sure there might be some truth on his strategies to appeal to specific young audiences, but still his actions during the lawsuit reveal an egocentric individual who thinks extremely highly of himself, and because of that can't handle criticism. He could have used the attention of the lawsuit to propel himself to much bigger things, yet he let himself fall down and get buried by hatred. That to me shows he is not the mastermind he supposedly is. Also it has been too long for him to reappear, every day that goes by without doing anything public lends to the idea that the guy doesn't know how to handle it.

I remember a video I had seen during this whole situation, it was by either a lawyer or a law student, who went over the public details of the case and searched into all of the copyright stuff Matt Hoss had. He hadn't just created these videos and then dumped them out on CZcams for the public to enjoy, but he had gone through the various legal chutes and ladders to ensure that he owned every video, every title, his image, and his character in whole. While I did see the lawsuit as very reactionary and petty, I also think you are absolutely right about his more calculating nature during that process. The guy clearly had it in his mind that this kind of thing could happen, if not this EXACT thing, from the very beginning. He found a formula that worked, and he was prepared to fight for it- I don't find it hard at all to believe he knew exactly HOW to fight for it. All in all, I'm glad that someone did this. I'm much happier it was you.

Why not both? So Hoss is a narcissist. His motivation is winning sure, but not in any one sense and not in a way that is linked to a solid identity. So he wants his "art" to win, but he also wants to win the girl, the lawsuit, the adsense, the fan base, the control of his image, all of it. What you think is the key component, his underlying personality, the core, who he really is -- is missing -- it's the one thing he is willing to sac at any moment. You see this with him switching up his content, with him trying to turn himself into the victim, with his shady dealings with the actresses and his offer to H3H3, the reason he's difficult to pin down, is because he has no core. The only goal is winning and being a "winner", being a being isn't a concern, personas are just masks you put on to win with. His promises and overtures to the actresses were not "the real him" but just a control & win seeker willing to shapeshift to get the date, to get the content, to get the cooperation of the actress, the character "bold guy" isn't him either, but he could easily be "bold guy" in real life if winning called for it, the guy that filed the lawsuit is yet another persona, the same one Onision puts on when harassing teenage girls with fake cease and desist letters, the victim he portrayed himself to be in court, yet another false persona. And finally Matt the political pundit, who doesn't know what he's talking about but tries to seem like an expert by name dropping obscure 3rd party candidates and recycling the opines of some guy on Facebook who sounded like he knew what he was talking about, but then has to fill the rest of the airtime with discussion of hot babes and pineapples because he has nothing to add, or even understands what he's saying or the implications of it.
The real error in your thesis is supposing that there is a real person there when you strip back all the layers of bullshit. There is not. Narcissists are shame based, wounded creatures with no sense of self or fixed identity of any kind. They just exist for attention. Matt Hoss, today, at this hour, has CZcams open in this web browser waiting for someone to give him that attention. Leave him a comment, and receive a like from him within 5 minutes.
