Intro: I thought it’d be neat that we begin this video with a story because I love a good story like anyone else. When I was growing up, I wasn’t really the type of person who used Twitter, or any the social media sites that I used today, I remember when I was around 13, I was at school, and back then the only app that was really considered fashionable was Facebook, now this is before it was taken over by the Minion moms, but just take my word, at one point, Facebook was cool, I promise guys, please don’t reject me.
Whatever, at that time it was also cool to follow ridiculous numbers of Facebook pages, and before they were taken over by cash farmed sponsorships they had the capacity to be pretty funny, to my juvenile brain at least, however, it was one day that I clicked on one of the videos, I highly doubt I could find it now, but I remember it being this page called UniLad, and I clicked the video, and it was this guy, with this really strange accent, talking about Manly Drinks vs Girly Drinks? Basically mocking the gender stereotypes behind alcoholic beverages.
And to be honest, I didn’t really know what to think, it was alright enough, and I did agree with the sentiment, I’d personally take cocktails over beer and so on any day, though I do like penis, so I might be biased. Either way, I didn’t really think too much about it, my life had very little to do with CZcams, the man in the video was GradeAUnderA, or Grade for short, he is a commentator with a very distinct style, I’ll talk about the styles that he was inspired by in a bit, but as you can see from that clip, it bathes in its rather amateurish charm. Currently Grade sits on just shy of 3 and a half million subscribers, and is very prolific in the commentary community for both good, and not so good reasons, but I didn’t know that back then, I was just a pleb.
Fast forward a couple years and I was much more engaged with the commentary community, all this drama with Leafy was transpiring, I wasn’t really an avid viewer of him but I was thoroughly involved in the whole feud with Keemstar, and I remember really rallying behind Leafy, I think I even sent him an email in support, that was incredibly sad. Not just the sentiment of it, but the fact that I used email, I’m like Benjamin Button because I used to be a boomer, but now I’m a epic woke man.
Then iDubbbz’s Content Cop dropped and I had my perception completely 180’d, everything I thought was fact, was not, and iDubbbz did a great job at destroying Leafy, who only managed to destroy himself with his response video, proving he was well out of his depth, but maybe that’s a story for another time. Grade was dragged into all of this because he’d made videos on the situation, and jumped on the train, in fact he’d been heavily involved in the drama, until the Content Cop, in which he just dropped off the radar. What a surprise.
And after a few more months of videos, people just kinda moved on, there were a few thought pieces, asking where he had gone, how he had fallen from grace, and so on, everyone kinda knew he’d return, and at the turn of 2019, he did. How long he’ll be around for again we don’t know, honestly he might have left already, but at the same time his return did complete the arc that I felt necessary to make this video.
I always felt there was more to his story, because my two experiences with his content were radically different, covering themes that could’ve been related to a different channel, my perception going into this is that of a person who became something else than he initially set out to be, from that person on my Facebook feed, it never felt like he was setting himself up to become another channel caught up in drama, so today if you’re not familiar with the tale of GradeAUnderA, I want this to be a learning experience not just for you, but also for me, understanding his rise, his peak, his fall. But we’re not just going to be documenting how it happened, we’ll ask why it happened, and maybe provide some opinions on the whole situation, let’s just hope they’re the right ones.

I've never minded the longer uploads, am I the only one?
30 minute videos are perfect for ly taste in this video. But those videos recently that is close to a full hour a video, is a little much. So i am glad this video is a little easier to digest
I’m really into the longer videos but by the time they do end I worry about my spent time :p 30-40 minutes suit me tbh
I do a lot of driving, so I like to save his longer videos for those longer trips and it really helps hours feel shorter.

the 2016 drama was one of, if not, my favorite period in youtube's history. It's just like every day for 3 months, something new emerged, it was so exciting
To me what i love about Grade the most is what he represents. Not in his person/character, but his style in videos. Quality never matter to him. Even when Arin from game grumps offer an mic, and he said no. He works with what he got, in a time where people is hungry for the highest quality. It brought me back to the classic days where the internet was nothing but that, but it had its own charm.

Absolutely. Grade's pathological lying became so blatantly obvious when he jumped on the Keemstar hate train. Half of the stuff he said was completely unfounded and the rest contradicted his own on-stream statements.

but I really miss Mumkey. I was hoping we could become friends or something. I had been working on a comic series and fanart for him. his channel was everything I love when it comes to entertainment. I haven't posted on CZcams in years, I'm grown now and looking back, my dumbass videos were inspired by him. Mine sucked- but at least I was keeping myself entertained. Like, I THOUGHT I was cool and that was good enough for little me. Eventually, for the better in my opinion, I was able to move on to more animation and art specific activities that I'm much better at because I realized I didn't have the effort nor drive to make CZcams videos or skits in such a way, BUT some people do.
I know this probably doesn't make ANY sense but I don't know how to really explain how the process went. Kind of like, through a very long chain of events, Mumkey's videos were a crucial part to me finding my calling and if he sees this for some reason, I want to thank him.

I love Grade, the internet drama saga was a bit of a disgrace, not because lack of humour but because he showed how easily people could get to him. he also suffered some unfortunate mental health issues during that time and that compounded with his internet presence took a toll on the content and led him to move from the platform for quite a while.
He's back and I hope we can get more comedic gold from him, he's hillarious, I specially love his video on the Kardashians.
i hate how everyone says "his drama saga was bad" but ppl fail to realise grade cared more about whats right rather than just printing money, thats the reason he called out bs from yt like demonitizing etc lol

I've been watching your videos the past few weeks and I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your content. You do such a good job explaining these situations in depth and you do it in a very polite manner. So much of youtube can be described as toxic and I find your content the exact opposite of that. I love these videos because you are talking like a historian would talk about a war but this stuff only happened a few years ago.
It's amazing how quickly the internet moves, the culture adapts and changes; in only a few years the entire landscape can change. I also really like the rather meta way you approach and discuss the internet pointing out the cultural norms that we naturally have grown to accept and it gives a clear picture of how the internet is progressing and figuring itself out.
It's also fascinating to watch this as someone who watched GradeA back in the day. I remember starting with his comedy videos that I liked and I think that I stuck with him through his drama section for the humor mostly without knowing or caring about the targets of the drama. As he got deeper in drama, I think I remember fading out on his channel until he stopped posting completely for a time after I think Leafy/Pyrocynical videos.
It's a little weird to look back with such detail and meta-analysis at something that was a relatively small part of your life but was still a large event in a sub-culture you took part in.
I liked him, I remember watching him when I was a Sophomore in high school (I’m graduated almost a year now ) . It’s interesting to see he is still talked about.
I love how I ring the bell and don’t get notified when you update.
I wasn't around during this era but I stumbled onto grade's channel a while back and I really like the guy, glad he's uploading again.. Can't wait for part 2 of this series.

oh god wow this video brought me BACK. pretty much all of the youtubers mentioned were my bread and butter in like 2015-16... Buckley was my first taste of the commentary genre
Hearing that you heard of the youtuber a dose of Buckley, this made me very happy and more excited to see a video on him, the angry Canadian, having a minefield of great videos, it would be interesting to say the least to see a video on from his tiny rise in a corner of CZcams to his current hiatus.
Would love to see you do a video about the weird, brief, meteoric rise of "Triggered Tro" - went super viral and gained a ton of subs and views and then just.. disappeared. I was never a fan of his style of content but it was a weird rise then sudden disappearance.

Another great piece of content. Not sure if I would prefer single longer videos or videos split in 2 parts. I thinks this one works well in two parts though. Thank you for the content.
