  • The Right Opinion: What Happens When Your Channel Goes To The Dogs - Brooke Houts | TRO
    Intro:
    My content has been a long journey from 2016, where I would rant about domestic UK politics and figures who most people watching this video probably wouldn’t even know in the slightest, to 2019, where I make long form videos on drama and conflicts, and the sorts of mentalities that lie behind them. However, one thing has never changed, the fact that I do care deeply about the topics I discuss. Every now and then I get the comment about how I’ve changed from what I used to do and honestly I have, and it has brought me more considerable success than previous topics of interest, but honestly if I wasn’t interested in the topics I spoke about, if I wasn’t invested in it, if I didn’t think I had something to say, then I probably wouldn’t have the tolerance to talk about it for half an hour in multiple videos. Make no mistake, you don’t have to like my videos, but I definitely care about them.
    And that’s the thing, I’ve always loved talking, in case you don’t have that impression already, and I love having opinions on everything, and honestly if I don’t have an opinion on something it just probably means that I haven’t had the time to look into it. I’ve always argued that it’s important to care about the content that you’re actually making, I obviously can’t sit here and look into the mind of every single person that I’m analysing in my videos, which is why I don’t tend to state intent, but I obviously have my own opinions on why I feel they made their videos, but it would be such a level of conjecture that I seldom include speculation. Personally, it’s always safer to side on the benefit of the doubt when making videos about people’s intent because I think a false negative is much more harmful than a false positive. If people take the assumption that a person is good, then that may still have grounds to be changed in the future about that person, however, if the community assumes a person is bad, then I do think it gives that person a tougher job. Nonetheless, when someone behaves in a way that I feel does underline a much deeper mentality of that creator then we should take the chance to call them out, not just for audience awareness of the specific situation, but of the underlying mentality that can often drive these incidents. This is where we meet Brooke Houts.

      No it’s actually very much the opposite, she’s trying to hard to train him to be a calm idealistic dog, which causes stress over long periods of time. She’s trying so hard it’s wearing her thin which causes a short temper.. which in turn can cause abusive scenarios.
      It’s ALOT more complex in her case, she’s not just abusive by nature. The dog type she got can also be extremely hard to train, takes more of an owner unbothered by jumping and other behaviors, she’s strictly training the dog which is causing a strain between the two, it sucks because I KNOW she loves that dog. It’s just a bad combo honestly but it’s much much more complex then this comment states. This comment is actually the exact opposite.

Maybe she loves her dog, but she clearly can't take care of him. Once you realize you cant take care of your dog properly, you do two things: step up or give him to someone who can. When we got her she was scared of everyone, didn't know how to run or play or ask for affection and flinched every time we went to pet her. When the dog didn't comply with her wishes to calm down (after she got him excited in the first place, no less), she felt this intense hatred towards him, as though she was taking his playfulness as a personal attack against her.

And then around like 11pm they are satisfied and tired out. So much energy in big dogs, it's important to let them stretch their legs. I guess it depends on whether or not she adopted a dog that had had the procedure done, or if she did it herself (paid to have it done). Lots of people simply don’t know about the practice. I certainly had no idea that this wasn’t their natural look. Basically there was a plausible deniability, or was until older clips of Sphinx were found.

    Those clips of her abusing her dog make me so angry, dobermans are an especially energetic breed that need a lot of exercise and training because of their intelligence! It's my personal dream to own a doberman someday, but I won't get one any time soon because of how much space and attention they need to flourish.
    To see this woman just tackling her dog and spitting on him makes me so furious that people like her are even allowed to own pets when they don't know the first thing about raising one!

    This is the first time in my life I haven’t had at least one dog, I can name and remember each one for over 50 years. Judy, Soames and then Lassie were the dogs that had an affect on my childhood and early adulthood. With Otis, Makeda and Franklyn effecting my adult life and Otis especially saw me through some bad times. I’m no longer able to walk a dog and I’m often too ill to even go out on my mobility scooter so it just wouldn’t be fair.
    I’m one of those people who like both dogs and cats and thankfully we have a brilliant 21 year old cat that has more character than any cat I've known. He is costing us a fortune in pet bills as he has a dodgy liver and a growth on his lower bowel, I don’t resent a penny and he is still very happy and spoilt.
    When you get a pet, be it from a good breeder, rescue place or the newspaper you sign a contract with that animal to treat it kindly and with respect. She did not do that, she used that dog for clout and nothing more. As for the guy with the miniature schnauzer, really? You let someone throw your dog around and you did nothing? You’re not on any higher ground in my book.
    To me she’s just like the Stauffers and has the same mentality of using a living being for clout.
    If you read my comment, which I doubt, I did it on purpose as it’s a pet hate of mine too. It’s like people mixing up 'lend' and 'borrow' and 'who' and 'whom'.

  • @queenofjensylvania
    @queenofjensylvania Před 3 lety +45

    She probably missed to train her dog from the start. It happens often, when the dogs are still small and cute that the owners let them get away with everything. Teach your dog from the beginning which behaviour is good and which is not, just be loving but consequent in telling them no, don't hit, don't yell, it's not necessary. No exceptions, it's confusing for the dog if things are allowed sometimes. Think about the rules beforehand and teach your dog to follow it. Give it enough exercise, dogs don't learn that well when they are all hyper. If the dog is very active, try more things that challenges his mind, my dog absolutely needs this to get tired, movement alone is not enough for him.
    Always praise your dog for the good behaviour too, don't just correct the bad behaviour. If you have a good bond with your dog it mostly wants to please you and will behave very well.
    And most important of all, just love your dog and give it affection.

      Exactly this - my psycho mother taught her mix breed fancy tricks like counting, but not to jump up, and he was only 1-2 years behind my foster mum's black lab. The difference was astounding - Rebel knew by a few months old that inside = calm and outside = run. I'd take him out the front, and he'd immediately kick into tag mode, zooming around and playing tag - he'd run over, bow in front of you, and zoom back off, swapping to chasing you if you tapped him. He would also occasionally gently headbutt me hard enough to put me on my bottom, then climb onto my lap for a snuggle, and only ever did this outdoors. He'd also leave off if you told him to. Meanwhile, my bio mother's dog still ran the risk of playfully nipping you at 10 years old. That is puppy behaviour.

You don't scream and shout at your dog, you don't spit on him or push him around. As far as I know there are physical corrections you can use without hurting or scaring the dog, but what she did is definitely not that. It was eye-opening and gut-wrenching when I realized I grew up with animal abuse. I had family members that treat their pets poorly and I was taught it was to "discipline them." Then I moved out for college and established a life there. One day I went to a now long-distant cousin's party and I was HORRIFIED by how they were treating their animals, even more so when I was realized I wouldn't have even noticed 5 years prior. That abuse was so normalized growing up that I'm honestly glad I didn't own any pets during those years, although I'm ashamed to admit it. Instead, I had friends that treated their pets like how they SHOULD and since they never did anything to hurt them, I felt like it would've been overstepping if I "disciplined" their own fur-babies. In hindsight, now I'm aware that some of the closest friends I have would've beaten the shit out of me and cut ties long ago had I hurt their pets.

      1) Discipline for things that are actually bad behavior, like eating shoes, pooping where they shouldn't, getting aggressive. She seems to be disciplining Sphinx for....wanting to play, or be affectionate. I will admit you should discipline a larger dog not to jump on you, but that leads us to
      2) Hitting is not discipline.

    So here's the thing, I have gotten mad at my dog, but it was for peeing in the house because she didn't want to go out in the rain! 😆 And I am laughing because after I got mad I started laughing because if you think about it, who wants to go out in the rain and pee! So, I felt TERRIBLE, started loving on her gave her tons of treats, begged for her forgiveness. From then on when I make her go out in the rain (she is a big GS) she comes in I make it fun, dry her off, sit there and comb her (she loves to be combed), and give her a treat. No more problems! My point is people can make mistakes, but this girl, just kept getting mad because he was ruining her video, became physical and you could see the hate in her eyes. Since then she gave the dog away (thank goodness) but literally blames it on the dog, saying he could not be trained. 🤨🤨 Bullshit.

    I have lived with a disturbing amount of roommates that displayed behavior like that towards animals. People like them get animals either out of impulse to fulfill some emotional need without thinking about the animal as a living being that requires care and work, or in Brooke's case, for content fodder. One of my last roommates did exactly that with a rat, until she got bored and realized taking care of it was more effort than she was willing to put in. You can bet Brooke emotionally neglects that poor dog at the very least most of the time off camera, which is why he's so hyper on camera. That's probably one of the only times she pays any attention to him.

We had a narrow gate to get through, which with a lovingly clingly and long black Lab was a wee bit awkward, and 90% of the time, I'd accidentally graze one of Rebel's toes with my wellies while trying to turn and lock it behind me. He was so mild mannered and understanding that he'd look *confused* when I apologised and tried to make sure his foot was fine. Dogs know when someone means it, which is why it hurts to see that dog flinch from her hands - he knows she is capable of hitting him, has hit him, and yet that boi loves her anyway.

  • @devoutlem8137
    @devoutlem8137 Před 4 lety +253

    The thing that makes her most guilty in my eyes (other than the blatant evidence of animal abuse, obviously) is how reminiscent her language is of domestic abuse. I had an abusive father who abused my mother when I was a child and she told me how he'd blame her and she'd feel like it was her fault if he got mad or hurt her and the whole "not real abuse" thing is the same way my mother was made to feel about her abuse and a big reason she didn't leave sooner. Seeing movies where women were covered in bruises head to toe after being abused and the way her husband acted like nothing he was doing was abusive made her believe that the little bruises she had and the guns being held to her head were just the result of her being a bad wife and she thought it was what she deserved.
    She is gaslighting so hard in her apology and that is the exact behavior I would expect from an abuser.
