An Improved Support Foot for The Benchogs Guide Rail Square?

- It might just be me....but I've been bugged by the tiny support foot/rest on the Benchdogs.co.uk guide rail square since I've been using them. If you're ripping something down, narrower than the the distance between the rails anti-splinter strip and the support foot on the square, the rail square can wobble and sway about when you're trying to align to a mark for a cut. Not a deal breaker, just irritating.
Well, I've finally done something about it! I show 2 simple fixes in the video. If it's something that's irritated you too, hopefully this will spur you on to just sort it. - Jak na to + styl
What makes these great is that you explain in-depth the whole process.
Good to hear. Thank you!👍
Nice, my biggest issue with the mk2 square was pushing the cams to lock them, would find them working loose when positioning the track with the repeat stop attachment on, simple fix was to swap the cams over so they worked by squeezing so now if I pick the square up im locking the rail at the same time. With that 2 min fix found the square more usable, will deff be adding an L plate to mine
Yeah, someone mentioned that to me on my mkII review vid (now deleted due to getting messed about by BD with affiliate monies!). I've done the same to the cams on mine. I think it's better but, still have to retighten sometimes. If you kept it on a dedicated rail, I think it'd be better to fully tighten the nut so they don't move.🤷♂️
How strange and timely. I used my new BD rail square for the first time today (only been in the box 7 months) and came across this same issue. Will give your fix a go tomorrow. Cheers.
7 months?! Good Lord😂 I'm actually a bit jealous you're set to solve the issue straight away. About 2 years now I've been saying to myself "I must do something about that".🤦♂️
You read my mind! I was just thinking about purchasing the benchdogs rail square and this popped up on youtube. Reckon I'll be making this mod too so thanks!
Nice one. Worth doing this simple mod I think. Don't put it off like I did!
@@BischBaschBosch yes indeed, will use your link, thanks again!
I bought in to the rail square early on with the TSO system....for years I have put up with tippy rails and much faffing about to get accurate cuts, all whilst thinking 'I should make a little lip to support that'. Thanks Stu, for the boot up the derierre....I'm going to make one this afternoon!👍
Nice one David. Funny how long we make ourselves put up with funny little annoyances sometimes. Get one made!😉👍
Neat solutions, I’ll have a go at making one, will definitely make the rail square more flexible.
And new lights Stu? Definite improvement to the video
Cheers mate. Yeah, give it a go! No such luck on the light front mate. Just been messing with the light and contrast in the editor to brighten things up a little. Another thing I should have started doing ages ago!👍
Awesome!!
Great little mod! The Bosch rail also frustrates me at times (especially the FSN800-32 rail), but next time I know I can just take 5 minutes for a very simple mod. Thanks very much!
Nice one mate. Worth doing I think. The L shaped aly one I just keep attached now. Kept the little wood scraps one too just in case. It's definitely better in an 800 rail.👍
Brilliant, it's funny, sometimes we spend days making the world better in our workshop building furniture, toys, other strange contraptions... But its the simplest, most overlooked things that truly make the difference!
Nice one bud! Can’t honestly say that it’s been a bother for me, but totally understand the need to scratch that itch! 👍👍
Cheers Peter. Did wonder if it was just me irritated by it but, seems it niggles a few others in the comments too. I use it mostly for breaking down slabs for my max planer width now, which being rough sawn, tend to be uneven. Probably doesn't help. Still, quick and simple fix for anyone it does bother.👍
Your builds and problem solving are second to none .also your knowledge of mafell is great. Im new to mafell and im blown away by the accuracy.could you tell me what kind of blades could i use for the plunge saw.would i have to leep buying mafell blades or are there cheaper ones that work the same .thanks
Cheers mate. Yeah, mafell is solid as tool manufacturers go. Key Blades and Fixings do "mafell fitment" blades - exactly the same kerf and dia etc. They're cheaper and a good selection (ripping blades, triple chip for laminates etc). Easier to get a range from them than Mafell. Specialist blades from mafell can take some hunting down. Key Blades don't advise re-sharpening. Though, I've had a few of theirs resharpened wuth no trouble. The Mafell blades should be good for multiple resharpens though and they do last really well. I use Mafell 48 and 32t blades in the plunge saw for general cutting, sheet goods etc. I use key blades for the rip and triple chip. Hope this helps.👍
beautiful solution mate
Thanks mate. 👍
That’s excellent Dude. I was ‘ripping some MDF’ using the Mark 2 version with the same issue. I haven’t used it enough to snap yet. Good to see an innovative and easy fix. I can’t see why they wouldn’t add the feature. Since I got the rail square I have not bothered with the mft table. Perhaps when designed, the versatility of the rail square was not fully appreciated.
Cheers bud. Glad it's not just me. Sure it's something they could add for a mk3? Kind if love both the mft and rails square for cutting. Just for different tasks. Yeah, I'm pretty sure rail squares came some time after mfts. Interesting to think whether it'd have made any difference to mft design and features.
This is a great hack 👍🏻
I can vouch for this being an issue on the Festool rail as well. If you made the screw holes into an open slot you could swap sides without taking the screws out.
I made a repeat stop with a bit of 700mm 2020 ally profile and a few screws for mine
Thanks mate. Good to know. I like the idea of making my screw holes into a slot. Easy enough with the bandsaw.👍 I have an old video in my benchdogs playlist somewhere where I made a repeat stop too. Used a piece of t-slot track for mine (the size used for mitre gauges). Still use it too.
The TSO rail square has 6mm holes along its side for attaching a bit of scrap 6mm ply to to hold up the square . Works great as well.
Good to know. Thanks Warren. I've noticed now that some folk are selling a 3d printed accessory for just that for the tso now too. That the top of the tso sits flush with the workpiece makes it easy too.👍
I did virtually exactly same as your scraps version
Nice to know I am not the only one with this problem
I was going to email Bench Dogs about it but in the end I said to myself, S.. em, they should have foreseen this ..... oh well
😂😂 I'll do an Insta post on it tomorrow and tag them in it. Give them an idea for the mk3 square maybe😉👍
👍👍👍Thank you
Cheers mate.👍
Great solution, I like the second option better, then the original slider stays in place 👍. Also, BD now supply colour matched sliders too 😍😂.
Cheers. Yeah, if you add the slider back in there's almost full coverage with the janky wooden one. 👍
I have the Bosch FSN WAN angle guide , that cost almost the same as the Benchogs one , but Bosch angle guide has one predetermined indents for 90 degrees cuts but it doesn't work its always of Square no matter how many time it checked for Square before a cut , regret not but a Benchogs Guide Rail Square now even though I don't use me track that often I usually use it for angled cuts anyway on sheets ,it would still be useful to be able to do Square cuts with it.
Used to have the FSN WAN myself Paul. Had the same thing. Used to set it with a square or digital angle finder. Can't believe they've never changed it to improve it. Even the mafell branded one! 🤷♂️
Ralph at BD making notes for MKIII 😂. A second groove in between the four holes you used for the ply support would work. Local machine shop could sort that for you.
I would get mine done but I only have the MKI 😉
Yeah, another slot would work. I'll tag BD in an Insta post tomorrow. You never know😁
@@BischBaschBosch I will split 50:50 with the second groove idea with you 😁

lovely job
have you any experience with both festool/makita track saw compared to the mafell if so whats your opinion on the festool/makita
Cheers. I've used the festool, Makita, Bosch and dewalt. I'll be honest, they're much of a muchness. The things that seperate them are negligible for the most part. I would lean to the festool of that group purely as I think it's base is quite a nice, substantial lump. For me though, the quick blade change, near zero dust, one lever bevel adjust and micro adjust of the mafell wins out. None of the others have this.🤷♂️
@@BischBaschBosch
Cheers
I was looking at both the festool and mafell in a shop the other day but there is nothing like hands on experience 👍
It's interesting I use my rail square at the top of the rail rather than the bottom not sure if it makes much difference but I prefer to hook it on the end and square it
Wouldn't make any difference to the wobble on a narrow rip bud but interesting you prefer it that end of the rail. I prefer it at the cut start generally as then, it always feels like you're pulling the square tight to the reference edge as you cut. I do fix it to the backside sometimes. Usually if there's a waney edge or something at the front and I can't be added to flip the board round.😁👍
What are the fs versions like ?
Sorry mate, what do you mean by "fs versions"?
I’ve got the dewalt track saw,had the bloody thing for years. It’s pretty good at breaking down 8x4 sheet materials accurately. Track saw rails are straight, all you have to do is mark your ply/mdf at the top and bottom of the sheet, align your track with those marks, then plunge and cut,no need of additional gadgets, regardless of how ingenious they are. We carpenters spend enough hard earned money on unnecessary shit as it is. That said,I really want one of these sodding things, sad.
I know what you're saying mate. I used to poo poo the rail square saying much the same thing...until I got one. They're just more accurate and efficient. Accurate without thinking sort of thing. I'm all for a bit of that these days. If you do change your mind and give in, BD do do a dewalt rails square.
Best thing you can buy for a rail, who’s got time to make TWO marks !
When you’ve got one you’ll wish you got it sooner especially with a repeat stop that makes it a game changer
Nice hack!
Cheers mate 👍
You've done a new job but it does seem odd to have to add fabrication to £100+ product.
Cheers. I mean, it does come with a rest to be fair. It's just that the workpiece needs to be 320mm+ wide to make use of it. These days I mostly use it to break down slabs for my max planer width of 240mm rendering the rest useless and annoying. Could be one of those things where, if customers haven't made a fuss, they don't know to fix it?
@@BischBaschBosch I'm new to the world of track saws and their accessories so after I've worked through your CZcams channel library I'll cast my judgement 😂
@@kevocos You must be a sucker for punishment 😂 I do have playlists for Bench dogs and Mafell videos, most of which are plunge saw related. Should make anything you're interested in easier to find 👍
