  • Reviewing the dowel maker proved a bit of a challenge but some top tips for perfect dowels discovered along the way. Both it and the feature packed saddle square - both all metal - very nicely made, reasonably priced and do what they're supposed to.
    Many thanks to Banggood for supplying the items for review.

    I can't believe you have found a use for one of those sockets - yes I have one.

      🤣 Crazy eh? Many a times I thought to include it in a charity or recycle centre box. Perfect for this though!👍

    Stu, man with patience….
    You turning technique for dowel going down sizes makes perfect sense when considering how this would work on a lathe. Knock the square bits off and work in 👍🏻

      I was very close to admitting defeat tbh. Glad I didn't! Yeah, exactly. It's what I have to do turning dowels on the over-router too - knock of the edges, then work in slowly. 👍

    As always... great video review!
    Finally a legitimate use for that pin socket thingy! And if you were to cut the stock perfect square so that the corners are all snug, it would be perfectly centered every time... no wobble.
    Another thought would be to duplicate the jig's hole pattern in a piece of plywood and set it 4 or 6 inches back from the jig. (another jig but with no blade) Both could be mounted to a single base for alignment. Probably chamfer the holes to funnel the dowel thru. It would catch _finished_ dowel as it is pushed through, and further eliminate wobble.

      Cheers mate. I like the idea of a ply mirror behind it might try that. Yeah, my stock was square but, if less than 19mm square, it's pretty easy to seat the stock off square and get a wobble (like in my last pass😁) with the universal adapter . Still think it's the best thing to hold the stock though.👍

    I recently chucked my socket multi thing during my move because I’ve never found a use for it, goes to show my wife is wrong when she says I should throw stuff away that I don’t use 😂

      😁 Normally I'm a real "if I buy one thing, i have to give up two" kind of guy. Somehow, that stuck around. Finally glad about it!

    I got one of these, the manufacturer escapes me, because I wanted to put in some wedged dowels to attach some legs to a bench. It worked ok, but I see I was trying to be to greedy hogging off the corners! Thanks, learnt something from you again!

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 15 dny

      Thanks mate. Yeah, it's a shame that because I found you have to progress through 3 holes for finish size, it kind of rules out using the largest 2 holes (18 and 20mm). As these are a good size for furniture fixings such as you mention. You could maybe block plane the corners first, then send through the 20 then 18 for an 18mm dowell? But has its limits. Strips no more than half mm larger than finish size really helps too I found. Hopefully you'll give it another go. I very nearly launched mine!😂

      @BischBaschBosch I've used it since for some smaller dowels and it was fine, but I suspect it will be better following your method. Cheers Stu, always a pleasure.

      Always pays to look at whatever you're thinking of buying from them carefully. But yeah same - bar a couple of exceptions, everything I've bought or been sent by them has been OK. Some bits, like the Hongdui kit has been exceptional!

      Yeah, like I said, having used it I totally get the negative reviews. But ultimately, i came up with a method for creating dowels I'm really happy with. 👍

    Sorry if I have missed in a previous video, but how do you mark out for locating dowels accurately? Any jig or similar?

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 16 dny +1

      As ever, depends what you want to dowel. I just measure and mark on my chairs as they're just fixing covers. If you want to join with dowels, then jigs are really useful. I have a Drillpro Self Centering dowel jig from Banggood. I think I reviewed that in my very first banggood video actually (link below if interested). Very handy!

    I ordered the saddle square and two other items over a month ago, cause one thing was out of stock Im not gonna see anything till bloody June! Bit of a difference to the delivery of the mitre fence dude. I get the feeling Banggood are becoming so last year as we go further into this year.

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch  Před 16 dny +1

      Aw mate, that sucks. It's happened to me a few times, and not just with Banggood. Why these places can't just take the initiative and send you what is in stock in the meantime is beyond me! Hope you're happy with your bits when they eventually arrive.👍
