    The 20V rechargeable battery on mine just gave out and it can't be replaced (according to B&D support) since it's over 2 years old. So, you can throw away $100 for another one of these vacuums or look for an alternative. It's too bad, cuz this vacuum worked great. Planned obsolescence at it's finest!

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 3 lety +1

      someone mentioned this issue with their 20v decker. battery went and basically so did the vacuum. now that it's being mentioned here and it's happening rather frequently that does it i don't care about it's great suction power or ratings. i just ordered this thing from amazon yesterday. when it comes i'm gonna give it a try and it's going right back. i'm not paying ~$80 for a 2-3yr product. gonna go with the bissell clean view. this is pretty shady of black and decker.

    I've owned 2 Black + Decker Pivot vacuums and have a love/hate relationship with them. While they work at full power they're fabulous. But once the battery dies - and in my experience it's about 18 months - they're useless. Basically it's a consumable product. We're now looking for a handheld vacuum with a replaceable battery which wouldn't be B+D.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 3 lety +1

      This seems to be a common problem among many cordless handheld vacuums. The batteries usually go 18 to 36 months before dying, and replacing the battery is often as expensive as the machine itself.
      You may just be better off with a 2-in-1 cordless stick, like the Dyson V10 / V11, or a corded handheld.

      You'd be better off with a full sized vacuum like the Dyson V10.

    I've had this Vac for a couple years. It has good power for what its designed for. recently the battery life started to decline. I think the rechargeable battery should have lasted longer. disappointed that i cant replace it. Not done trying. I did manage to take it apart to expose the battery (s) but the metal tabs on the battery terminals look like they are glued in place. There are 5 separate batteries wired in series and connected together. Anyone else having battery trouble.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 4 lety +1

    BATTERY: Yep, that's the issue. I have the old Ni-Cd Pivot and loved it. When the batteries went dead, yes you could find them online for they were like $50 so it didn't pay - throw the old one away or maybe you could use the filter on the Li-ion model.
    If you price Li-ion batteries, again, you'll see that they are about the price of this vacuum. So again, why replace the battery when for another $20 you get a newer unit?
    FINAL QUESTION: One begins to question the true cost of batteries. If they really cost as much as they charge, there would be no way to manufacture this vacuum and make a profit - you surely can't make money on replacement batteries either. It really suggests the battery market is overpriced with pricing that the market "will bear."

  • @vw3276
    @vw3276 Před 4 lety +2

    The pivot is a good vacuum when it works. The 2 years battery life is the weak point of the vac. There are 5 x 18650 (3.7v each) batteries connected in series to generate the 18.5 volts to run it. I believe it is bad practice to charge 18650 cells in series at ( ~ 20 volts?) which is what I believe is causing premature failure of the Li ion cells. These cells should be charged at no more than 4.2 v each in parallel. Programmed obsolescence by B&D?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 4 lety +1

      Perhaps? I don't know enough about those specific batteries to say for sure.
      However, I will say that it's pretty common for most rechargeable batteries to have a 2-3 year life in vacuums. To me it doesn't feel like B&D is doing anything all that different than other vacuum makers.

    The testing of the vacuum was limited to just hardwood with various selected debris fields in which for the most part the vacuum performed well. I would say most folks would use this vacuum on the carpet, for instance, stairs and the car. Why not test the vacuum on the carpet? This would have made for a more complete analysis of the vacuum and gave people a better understanding of the product if it was worth the buy.

    We have this vac and we liked it but it has a problem that it turns it’s self off ,apparently from other videos it has a faulty thermal breaker diode that needs to be replaced . I think B&D should offer to fix it but most likely they’ll not so it is the last product we buy from the the brand . And we tell a friend and they’ll tell a friend . Igloo made acrappy coolers when the cheap latch broke after a few months you had to buy another cheap latch for 18.00 dollars back in the 80s . Now there’s dozens of coolers far superior to the igloo and they where the big boys in that market

    I know this is an old video but just a bit of advice
    .. You should NEVER cover up the logo or name of your company which you are in this video! You should have it off to the side so that it's always visible to your left or right.

      As far as the wattage, I'm not really sure what you're asking. The power brick doesn't include any info on the required watts.

    Don't buy this product. There are many cases of controlled obsolescence on his model. The battery will stop running precisely after the warranty ends and there is no possible replacement. All the plastic pollution caused by this makes me really angry.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 4 lety

      Fair point. It's a cheap handheld vacuum designed to last anywhere from 2-5 years.
      But what would you buy in place? Basically all standalone handheld vacuums on the market are of a similar price point and quality.

    • @davidkelly6842
      @davidkelly6842 Před 3 lety

      OK I have essentially the same battery criticism. Are there no handheld vacuums with replaceable batteries? My battery powered garden tools and drills all have replaceable batteries. What's up? Sounds like a marketing opportunity for some company.

      @@davidkelly6842 Nothing great that we've come across yet, especially no clickable systems (like you'd see with those powered tools).
      The handheld vacuums are just so inexpensive I imagine most companies just don't think the added complexity / manufacturer cost is worth it.
