    Hoi Moreno! Ik ben totaal geen ondernemer maar het is altijd al mijn droom geweest om mijn eigen groenten tuin te hebben. Mijn man en ik wonen pas in ons nieuwe huis en ik was eigenlijk opzoek naar videos om in mijn tuin een klein moestuintje te beginnen... Mijn man is echter een echte ondernemer en heeft het al zo lang ik hem ken over het beginnen van een eigen zaak. Hij heeft al honderden ideen gehad maar laatst zei hij ineens dat hij een stuk grond wil kopen, ooit, gewoon voor kippen ofzo.. maar dit is misschien de perfecte combinatie voor ons! Hi Moreno! Do you use the same soil or compost for everything, that you grow? Next week I get a ton of compost and I plan to put it everywhere about 15cm high and I want to plant a lot of different things this year. I tried a lot before, but some plants just did not grow, like beans, onions or carrots. Hopefully it will be a better year. Thank you for your videos, you are living a lot of people’s dream and will inspire a lot to get started! ♥️

    I am so happy I found your channel. Your farm was featured by another channel and when I learned that you are in France, I became very interested as I do not speak good French and you do speak English. I am from the west side ( Britanny). You mentioned in one of the comments that you ordered your compost from a company, do you happen to know where else I could find wood chips in big quantity aside from the ‘déchetterie’ ? I only have a small home garden but I found out that wood chips really retain water so well that I do not have to water my veggies often. I had some wood chips once but the person who provided us for free had passed away so I do not know where to buy them. Thank you so much for your time.

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Před 4 lety

      Hey there! You're right! The wood chips really retain a lot of moisture. Ever since we've applied it we've noticed reduced needs of irrigation :) We get our wood chips from a local tree service company. We looked for these companies in our area and simply called all of them. One was kind enough to allow us access to their property and we're allowed to grab it whenever we need it. We could also get it delivered here at a delivery cost. Hope that helps! Happy gardening :)

    Your Videos are fantastic, you bring so much Information to us viewers which is really unterstandable. Thank you! I love your farms set up especially the trees! I think you mentioned in a previous video the plot was an old orchard? I just have one question, don‘t the trees cast too much shade onto your crops? This fascinates me because I love trees and want to incorporate as many into my plot as possible :)
    Thank you again and I look forward to many more videos from you.
    Best wishes from Austria

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey! Thank you for the kind words :) We love the trees too! It was a small family style orchard. Most people back in the day had one in this area. At arrival we've made sure to give the trees a heavy prune since it was simply too dark under them. Now it's a lot better and much less shady. Even though it works really great, I would personally put more thought into the actual placement of the trees and the actual species. It lacks support species (e.g. nitrogen fixating trees). Also we have a large walnut tree on the east side of the plot which does create lots of shade at a small section of the production. Here the crops tend to take much longer to reach maturity. These things can easily be avoided with a proper farm design before implementation ;) Hope that helps!

      Hey there! Thank you for the kind words. Just a small word of advice, just because I do things this way doesn't mean you can literally translate my approach to your own climatic conditions. In the more arid and tropical regions of Kenya you'll have to work with more mulches on top of your garden beds to prevent too much evaporation. In the mountainous regions of Kenya where lower temperatures are normal, you could possibly translate the approach we use to that situation. Good luck!

    Great video. The compost you put down on your beds looks very woody, is that the same quality you used over the growing season? If so, did you have any germination issues with direct seeded crops in it? Thanks!

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Před 4 lety +3

      Hey Steve, sharp eye! The compost is indeed a bit on the woody side. The company we bought it from actually delivered a coarser screening end product to our farm. Normally the organic material we use is much finer and completely decomposed. On the other hand we got an extra truck and we could also amend the beds with a bit of pelleted chicken manure for extra fertility. It shouldn't give any direct seeded germination issues though. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Jan. I wish I had an easy answer but it depends on several things, including distance to market, the type of market streams that are available, experience of the farmer and his/her ability to market the crops, the quality of life you're looking for, your customs, and a whole bunch of other things. We're on about 1500m², but another 1000m² would be optimal for us (we also do microgreens and have fruit trees). To start off, I wouldn't recommend you start with more than 1000m². It's a great starting point to learn all the different aspects of farming. Hope that helps!

    Hey Moreno just wondering your thoughts on regular ground gardening vs raised beds. Obviously you don't use raised beds so just curious about your pros and cons.

    • @TheDutchFarmer
      @TheDutchFarmer  Před 4 lety

      Hey Erik. With the approach we take to market gardening, the 'no dig' approach, you're automatically raising your beds through the large initial application of compost. You can't see that my beds are raised because of the wood chips in the pathways. I guess it all depends on climatic conditions and the approach of the farmer. I know that when I had my raised beds without the wood chip mulch application in the pathways, we had some issues with the sides of the beds drying out too fast during the hot months of the year. If you have for example very clay-ish soil, you could benefit of raised beds by improving the overall drainage. If you're in an arid, desert type climate, your production might benefit of 'sunken beds'. There's not one perfect universal application.
