Finally a simple and strait forward video to understand tomato pruning, thank you Moreno🙏
Love your vlogs and your garden/weeding tools! Thank you for your informative vlogs on vegetable growing. My father was a dutch immigrant to New Zealand 75 years ago. Hard working and industrious he worked various jobs. Lived off an oily rag, purchased a little land, grew vegetables sold them, eventually buying more land. Married had children diversified into poultry farm and market gardens. Us kids spent many happy, summer holidays taking out the laterals on tomato plants and stringing up. Even back then we knew that disease could jump from the ground to the plants and lower leaves were never allowed to touch the ground. Hygiene was paramount. We had to clear up all the laterals and burnt them or buried them off site. We had no shears but if you snap the laterals between thumb and fore finger you can get a clean break. Momma had a natural Italian madeup sticky substance (honey/ willow bark/turmeric and something else baking soda could be epsom salts)? Not sure) she made it up herself from a recipe from nonna we called it dobbo it tasted great and dabbed on the break where the lateral was. Dobbo cleaned our hands good after lateralling too. I remember cod liver oil, seaweed and epsom salts were used for foliar feed, as well as ground feed. Chicken manure was used on all crops. We always rotated crops each year. Alot of time was spent weeding and cleaning. We each had 2 rows of 50metre long tomatoes to keep clean and maintain. We each had a self regulated strict schedule and gained 50% of the turnover. Competition amongst us siblings was intense on who could get the most yield. It was fun getting up at crack of dawn to work b4 school. We let out all the chickens in morn they spent all day pecking in the field next to the market garden. They spent all their time trying to get into the veges and peck them. The greater tomato yield more cash in pocket. Strawberries were another big summer crop. We sold direct to the public from our farm shop. Skills learnt at home doing this work set us all up for life.
I bassed in the most southern tip of Africa and just had to prune my tomatoes for the first time this season, to be honest I have never farmed before and this is a first in my life.
Thank you also for the detailed show notes. You put a lot of effort into making these teaching videos, and we all benefit from it!
DUDE! Thank you so much! For the first time after watching countless tomatoe growing videos have I actually learned HOW and more importantly WHY.....!!! Pruning and trimming can be beneficial. It makes perfect sense now! Hallelujah!!!! I also use to Overthink transplanting plants but I feel more confident now seeing your simple steps. Wish I was closer to purchase some of your produce and support you. Beautiful farm and great video!!
Your videos are always so packed with the best information. We use pretty much the same trellising method, but this technique fills in some important gaps in our knowledge, There are so many take aways, but keeping only the main stalk and pruning so much of the bottom makes a lot of sense. Thank you, Moreno!
You have outdone yourself once again Moreno. Thanks for your generosity., sharing knowedge is priceless. Another enlightening video to my project.
Gracias Mario!
I came across this channel 2 days ago, and I simply cannot stop binge-watching. The information is perfectly detailed and the presentation is great. Moreno, by far, has the best Gardening channel on CZcams, hands down.
Lived in Florida all my life and never knew how to prune tomatoes properly. Great video, great explanations. Thank you!
Goede duidelijke info. Blij dat je niet teveel video’s maakt, maar juist heel beknopte met goeie tips 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Bedankt Annelies! :)
Hello, I have one beefsteak plant in what I believe is a five gallon container. I've never grown produce and was having trouble "getting it" when I read about or listened about the pruning process. I resorted to Google for some "pruning tomato plants videos." Watching you show it and tell it helped me "get it." Yaaay! A person in Chicago showed and told about pruning them in containers. This video is so understandable as was hers . Thank you!
Watched again as the tomato planting season is getting near. Looking forward to new videos!
I am a very visual learner. Thank you very much for the step by step instructions and accompanying actions. I've read these instructions before, and other videos talk about it but don't show the actions. This is going to be a great help to me this season. 😁👍🏽
I started pruning my tomatoes a lot more this year. They are doing really great, probably because it is less likely for them to get disease. I grow them outside, can't afford a green house, since I grow them for myself, so I'm using stakes to keep them up. I have long metal clothlines (old house) so I can tie them from the lines if they start getting too heavy. Still a fan of this channel.
This is the best video I found for pruning the tomatoes. Subbed.
Amazing greenhouse :)all plants looks very healthy there
I'm trying this. Thanks for your enthusiastic instruction.
Thank you for this direct and helpful video regarding tomato pruning. It's a very well done video.
Thanks, I realise the mistakes I’ve made with my plants, you’ve left me a bit wiser.
Last year was my first year gardening, had no idea what i was doing and just grew huge bushes with fruit that didn't rippen.
This year im doing 2 leader pruning on large tomatoes and 3 leader on cherries. Thanks to this method i already have a ton of fruit on the vines with some of the cherries almost being ready to pick.
Loved this pruning video. Thank you so much. Such a useful site.
I really like this pruning technique. Thanks for showing me what to prune.
It always great to learn, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Greetings from 🇧🇿 God bless you!
Awesome video, as always! Thanks a lot, you're a generous and insightful farmer. Your contribution to the world of organic food production ( and beyond ) is much appreciated!
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Another excellent video Moreno! When I start my farm then I will use your videos a lot.
Found this tutorial very helpful in showing me how to increase my yield of tomatoes.
I have never pruned my plants and found that I had yellowing leaves on my plants and bushy plants but not that many tomatoes. Ready to go out and prune them now!
Я просто влюблена в этого человека! какой он молодец!! какой трудолюбивый!!!
Thank you for the tips. I will surely implement them for my tomato plants 😃 Can't wait to watch more of your videos 👏
Very informative. I’ve tried a variation of stringing them up and it works. Another great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 😊🍁♻️
You're a good teacher. Thank you
Your videos are so great and informative, my garden will definitely benefit from this
Dank je , finally a good explanation for the tomatoes
You’re the first person, ever, to address the issue of bifurcation of tomato plants and how to deal with this. Thanks so much. Happy gardening from Canada.
Hey David! Thanks! You too happy gardening:)
The other option to not prune is a gain in fruit number and more important the taste ! the more there is leaves and branches the more it produce sugar for the fruit, removing them make fruit to be tastless and they tend to mature slowly. You can compare the same variety of pruned and not pruned tomato, this make hudge difference in taste.
But i admit it is dificult to have big unpruned tomatoes inside a tunnel for easy production, this plant is so exuberant it can be monster plants.
Thanks for the input. It's indeed important to find a balance between leaves/fruit amount. Taking off too many would hurt the plant and it's fruit production. Leaving too many, in the setup we have, is asking for troubles! As you say, tomatoes are very vigorous plants!
Hi Moreno, thanks on great information! My tomato outside will be ready for first pruning in few days, perfect timing with video. Regards!
Thank you as always, for great info and for sharing your brilliant techniques. Much appreciated 👍
Thanks!
Best video on tomato plant I’ve seen 🙏🏼
Wow I learn’t a lot about growing tomatoes. I might plant a few in my garden
Great insights. More of these please!
Excellent video, thanks! Here in east central Florida with it's heat and humidity, tomatoes are really tough to grow outside in containers. Gonna try a new soil recipe this fall I got from an experienced local grower. With the cooler and drier temps coming soon, I really hope for some success. This video provided some great tips, thanks again!
I am so glad that I stumbled across your video today. I was very intrigued by how you grow your tomatoes. So much so that I decided to take notes and use your techniques with my own tomato plants. I can't wait to start this. Thank you again for such an informative and easy to follow video. I am now a subscriber.
Hey Beppe, welcome to the channel:) Good luck with your tomato plants! Hope they'll provide you with plenty of fruits!
I really enjoy your video's they are educative just came your channel today. Good work keep it up am learning alot as a beginner. Thank you
Thanks for making this video! I wish I knew all this when I planted 5 tomato plants in the indoor windowsill of my apartment a couple years ago. I just let the plants run wild and it was like I had a living curtain covering a 7ft wide and 6ft tall area. It looked cool but probably wasn't the most efficient setup in the world.
A living curtain is also great to have! :) As long as the plants provided you with sufficient tomatoes it's all good. There's many ways to achieve the same thing, but we personally like this approach to pruning.
I want to start my own kitchen garden With more Varieties of vegetables, this summer. You give great tips with tomatoes plants. I had one tomato plant last Summer, I just let it go bushy. I will have afew this summer and use your planting system. awesome vid.
Great video.... I really enjoyed watching it and will be implementing many of your tips.....thank you 🙏
Beautiful farm. Love your videos!

This is my favorite channel
Awesome video! Very informative. My tomatoes are doing well, but definitely need pruning, thanks!
Thanks! Good luck with your tomatoes! :)
It will be more helpful to see the pruning all the way to the top. This way it will be really straightforward maintenance of the plant for a full season. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us , so far is been really pleasant to follow you👍👍
Thank you for the precious information.
There is one guy in USA, California, vlog Khang Star, he is more into cross breeding plants and growing new variations. He has a small garden around his house. He is very passionate of what he is doing. He gets different seeds from different countries and works with the. You can see his videos when having free time.
Fantastic info. Appreciate your work.
This is WOW.. Thank you so much🙏
Thank you for the very informative video!
Great info and perfect timing!! My biggest take away.....I’ve been worried about trimming off one of the larger branches where the main stalk splits in two, but this video cleared that up. Thank You Moreno!! Great Video.
Hey guys thanks! Glad it gave some clarity :)
@@TheDutchFarmer um how can you protect your garden tomatoes from freezing
@@jimka7792 We don't! We're in the Northern Hemisphere. It's spring now :) As soon as cold sets in during fall we transition into growing cold hardy crops.
@@TheDutchFarmer oh😢
You should write a book. 4 parts: 1 planting/ prep in seasons calendar, 2 how to start with your adapted method ie your garden setup, 3 listed details per commercial plant, 4 your insight of commercial farming. No nonsense around soil conditions etc as it's no dig anyway. Your video's can support your book
Yess! New inspirarional video! Goed bezig Moreno!
Thanks Jelle! :)
Thank you for sharing and good job for you
Awesome content! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Ronnie! :)
Lovely video and beautiful tomatoes
Stumbled upon your videos ... love the systematic methodical way about getting things done ... any videos for doing on just a family garden scale?
Wow..awesome your garden i like that 👍❤️
Very nice with informative video upload! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thanks for educating us.
Hope it's useful! :)
Extreamly valuable knowledge Moreno. Keep up the good work I hope in my life I can do this as well. I believe even though it's commercial set up you have but sharing this knowledge will help us to save the world. One small step but one giant leap towards protecting the planet from horrible Monsanto and alike monsters. If many people do this and habe many farms in cities there will be less carbon in atmosphere and maybe reverse global CO2 emissions.
Appreciate your talent
Very knowledge lndeed. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it :)
I love your idea
merci beaucoup Moreno!
Great video sir! This info. just came at the right time; we're planning to grow our tomatoes outdoors since we have no greenhouse/ tunnel at the moment. Is there something else to note, while we apply this technique here? (especially with the pests and diseases) You are an inspiration Mr.Moreno!
Thanks Moreno!!!
You're welcome! :)
More wonderful content Moreno!
Thanks Erik!
Great tips!
Thanks!
Thank you for your great share
Moreno, I need to say, you have very good English! So does that mean you speak 3 different languages???? You are very easy to understand and I appreciate it.

Q: what plants are beast to grow at the base of your tomato plants?
Nice info good job
I love the way you use the high tunnel for growing tomatoes! They look so uniform and neat. What size is your high tunnel and how many rows can you grow in it?
Very complete explanation, gasten
GOOD INFORMATION
Nice video! Clear and informative. Do you remove sucker from determinate tomatoes? I heard it’s not necessary. What’s your suggestions? Thanks
greeting form Nederlandsch-Indië
Thank you so much! I just purchased several bushy tall plants- running to rescue them right now! Lol! Curious what other plants one can plant at the base of the tomato plant? Great video!!!
cool, thanks.
Is there ever a need to remove some fruit early because there is too much? To improve the taste of the fruit left on the plant.. I’ve done this pruning this year for the first time and they are going great!
The suckers I take off, I put in water to root, and then I have an extra plant.
Concise!!
T'is awesome.
I do that outside only I use stakes and keep tying the main stem To stake all the way up.. I plant my tomatoes deeper than you do from what I saw. I find it makes the stock thicker and sturdier and takes up more water
