This is like a 3-day market farming course in 20 minutes :) Awesome!!
That is kind of you! :)
Absolutely wonderful video! Instructive, detailed and inspiring. What more could us, aspiring farmers, ask for?
Keep going, Moreno! You're doing a hell out of a job.
Hey Ana, thank you for the kind words! Appreciate it! :)
5:10 to 5:45 Beautifully said and very interesting conceptual understanding of small scale farming
9:18 to 10:30 Excellent explanation of using woodchips
Your information is rich, thanks for sharing
Hey Maghmuda, thank you for the kind words! :)
So much information in such a short time span. Great video!
Hey Amy, thank you! :)
Your content is amazing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thanks Ronnie! :)
Beautiful video. Thanks for the info
Thanks! :)
Best farming/gardening channel on CZcams.
Bravo ! Encore une fois, une vidéo très instructive, merci beaucoup !
Merci Julien! :)
C’est super intéressant d’attaquer cette série en Janvier! Le début d’année c’est la période de production la plus difficile à imaginer je trouve, thank you for sharing 🌾 Can’t wait for spring to come by and see the intensity rise with the temperatures 🤠
Hey James! January & February are really relaxed months, but the upcoming months are going to be entirely different. As soon as the weather clears up, the garden will be full again and it should make the series a lot more interesting ;)
hello alright i discovered your videos last night i liked it a lot, my name is Alex Pacheco from marinos Luca ,,
I could cry! It looks so nice there, while here (Minnesota, US) we have a few feet of snow on top of the garden beds and the temperature right now is -2F or -18.89 C.
Sorry to hear that! Those are some really cold temperatures you're dealing with! Good luck with everything!
@@TheDutchFarmer Hard to believe but for February, our coldest month, that is mild. LOL You get used to it.
Geweldige video👌 Duidelijke uitleg💪
Hey Remco, thanks! ;)
Great information and educated in your farm field!!
Such an excellent video!!!
Eindelijk iemand die meegaat met het seizoen en concrete tips meegeeft!
Ja ik dacht dat het wel een interessante serie kon worden met maandelijkse tips;)
Hi Monero, thank you for the videos, they very informative. I'm Freedom from South Africa. we have just acquired 10 hectares of land to use for the production of veggies, we are still researching for now hence I came across your videos while doing research.
@the dutch farmer Moreno
Always grateful to you for sharing your experience..I would like to know that do you load the bed with fresh compost, everytime you harvest before starting to plant new crop..
How often do you load your beds with fresh compost
great vid!
Thank you! :)
Careful of the animal manure Moreno. I’d run an assay on it before you use it en masse. Lots of the feed the animals consume has been sprayed with pyralid compounds (a very persistent herbicide), which remains in the animal manure and can then badly affect your crops. The feedlot owner would not necessarily know what his feed has been sprayed with, which is why you need to test it thoroughly. Charles Dowding did a couple of excellent videos on it. This is a terrific video - thanks. I’m a flower grower in Australia, where we’re heading into autumn!
Hey Smith, thank you for your concerns! It's something we've been very careful with and we only apply organic matter we know the quality and source from. So far we've only applied it for our high demanding high tunnel production. Enjoy the upcoming 'slower' months;)
super interesting video thank you. very dense packed with info
Hey there, thank you!
Great informative video, thank you. New subscriber here 👍🏼
Leuke video.
Inderdaad, nog even geduld! Veel geluk dit jaar! :)

Hi Moreno,
Great channel, very very useful!
Just a silly question: the fleece and the insect nets are 2 different things, right?
Thank you and thank you for all the great info!!
Inspiring. I love your videos. Subscribed 👍🔔
Awesome thank you! Welcome to the channel :)
Awesome content homie enjoyed it
Good to hear that! Thanks!
Great video Moreno and very informative. just put down wood chip on my garden which i found on side of road , it made a great path way. How do you deal with carrot fly with your carrots and do you have wire worm issues with gardens that used to be grass. How do you deal with this.
Keep the video's coming they are very helpful and interesting.
Hey Chris! We barely get carrot fly problems. Wire worms were in abundance though! Definitely the first season after converting the plot from grass to crops. Through constant applications of composts and some crop rotation (planting crops that are less vulnerable / or damage seems less noticeable) we've been able to handle them pretty well. At the moment there's not much wire worm pressure at all anymore. Invest in the soil and the soil will invest in resiliency;)
My 6 year old grandson just went out to take the kitchen compost to our chickens. The snow is frozen solid as it is 10 degrees F here right now despite the sun shining! This is 25 degrees below normal temps. It is going to be even colder next week and over the next 10 days. We are zone 5b/6a. Geesh. I love your videos! I know this is year later and you may not have time to answer any questions but I wonder if you transplant beets instead of direct seeding? JM Fortier always transplants from starts. I tried in the paperpot but that thing and I just can't get along. I'm selling it. It worked great for onions (which was the original intention for it's development) but it is too heavy for me. Your video on the 6row was a godsend. Thanks

Me too! :)
nice video sir Moreno.
I've watched your video several times already AnD I downloaded it offline in CZcams po
.,;) :) :)
Ive a suggestion/an idea and I don't know if you'll like it. It can increase your income. I know it's tough for small farmers even if it goes good for you but I wonder if you've a big enough house close to the farm, few extra rooms? Don't you want to start a small bed & breakfast beside your farm? Just a simple one with a special concept serving breakfast, eggs, veggies etc from the farm? Or letting the guests visit/help in the farm? I would love to do that with my kids 😄. We r lucky in Sweden that we can rent a small land in the city and plant some veggies but it's not the same to have the farm feeling. Think about it, like starting with renting out 1 big family room + 1 or 2 single/double room. I would do it if I could. Good luck with what you're doing
I am in Nigeria but would definitely love to vacation somewhere like this. Wonderful concept
Hey there ;) Thank you for your input. I love the idea as well. It's something I'm thinking of doing at a later stage. We're currently renting land. On owned land I'd probably want a camping/campsite, restaurant serving only farm grown produce and a small shop attached selling artisanal products from the farm. So many ideas and only so much time... Maybe one day ;)
Using time in my pre-farming job to build an app that specifically helps with crop planning for market gardens.
Default bed width, succession planning, calculate needed yields backwards and forwards ... gonna betatest it in a few years when I start my own farm :)
Ae Norist that would be a fantastic app my friend!!! It is badly needed in our field! This app will be such a huge help!
Good luck Ae Norist !:)
Hello, Moreno!! Great consistent and straight to the point!!
Question: Compost can be peat moss or coco coir...again...what are the ingredients of the compost?
Nice fsrm
Hi. Really informative video. I've learnt so much in such a short video. Thank you. Can I just ask, do you put a membrane under your wood chips? I've just taken got an allotment plot and it was completely overgrown. I'm beginning to lay out the beds and was thinking of having woodchip paths. I've removed as much weed as I can, but some of the perennial weed roots seem to go on forever and I'm not sure I've been able to get them all out. Another problem I have is the plot is covered with weed seed that had fallen before I could get the weeds out. If you don't mind me asking, what would you advise? Thank you.
Hello Moreno! Why don't you make your own compost like Charles Dowding? :)
Hi Moreno, Have you had any issues with the wood chips/mulch introducing bugs/pests into your garden? I have access to free mulch but it seems to be ridden with pests sometimes (earwigs).
Great video!! I only have just found this series but you've really spurred me on to try and make a good go of growing produce this year. You said that you probably wont buy the same compost again, where do you plan on getting the amount of compost you need?
Hey Andrew, thank you! We normally buy it from another specialized compost facility a bit further than the current one. The one we bought it from now is strictly composting all organic material they get without paying any attention to it. The other company specializes in agricultural mixes and specific blends aimed for the farmers requirements. It's a bit more expensive but the end product is also much better.
Thanks for your reply!!
Is it possible to tell me where you plan to buy it?? I don't live that far from where you are in Haute Saône and, after getting some disappointing compost last year, I'd really like to find something of better quality this year! Also for the wood chips - where I am nobody just gives them away whether you collect them or not... 😕
Andrew James he explained in the video where he plans to get it in the future. Please rewatch that segment of the video and listen this time. Watching a video does you no good if you do not listen to the valuable information that he is giving all of us for FREE!
He has made a deal with a local dairy farmer that is going to pile all of his cow manure in a field and allow it to decompose and turn into compost then they will transport it to his farm for use, but go back and watch the video again where you see the cows and he explains it better than my short answer here.
Good luck brother!
@@1982MCI As I live in the same area as Moreno I was actually asking for A NAME AND ADDRESS of the supplier, so that maybe I could get some for myself.
Not too sure what your problem is pal, but maybe you should learn to read and understand the English language before making worthless comments.
@@moi7748 Hey Andrew. It took us a while before we found a company that actually don't sell their wood chips but simply throws it on big piles onto a parcel of land they own. I suggest you call every single tree cutting service in your area (that's what we did). Maybe you'll get luck this way. The company we normally buy high quality compost from is called "Agrivalor" in Alsace. There's also "Agri Compost 70" in Vesoul. I don't know their quality but that's another compost facility. Hope that helps!
In Utah I have to be careful of animal waste that is a byproduct of roundup hay. The roundup is fairly persistent but I believe it can be processed with time. Is roundup hay allowed where you are?
Great stuff!! Any recommendations of suppliers for the Jang Seeder and 6 row? Im struggling to find the equipment.
Also, do you use the greensharvester for arugala and spinach etc? Its quoted as $600 and $250 delivery to Ireland.
Richard perkins had it on his shop for €1500.
Have you found an effective alternative?
Thank you! When we started there weren't many companies, if at all, selling these tools here in Europe. So we shipped everything in from the US. Now there's more and more companies carrying these tools. For the Jang you can try:

Hope that helps! Cheers!
Thanks for your videos. A question: wouldn't wood chips on the path attract slugs? I was told that they like to hide under moist wood, which is why we shouldn't use wood for walling off raised beds. THX
Gab The Chef if you do see a rise in slug population then turn your ducks loose in the field every couple of days and I promise you that you won’t have a slug within 5 miles of your crops after the first day or two. Slugs are a delicacy for ducks and they will love you for allowing them in the fields. They are also very good at just walking up and down the pathways and will not harm your crops at all unless they find a pile of tasty bugs on a leaf and then they may accidentally break a leaf or two trying to get to the bugs.
You do have a flock of ducks don’t you?
A produce farm cannot be successful without a flock of at least 4 ducks for insect control. It’s the best organic insect control you can buy and without them you are really gonna struggle with insect control and may need to use chemical controls which I haven’t had to use for years because the ducks take care of all of it. Plus it is entertaining and educational to watch. The ducks will find areas with insect infestations that you didn’t realize you had until you turn them loose. Don’t worry, the ducks will know exactly what to do, just set a couple a few feet inside of the garden or field and the others will follow and they will walk p and down each and every row till they are done. It is fascinating to watch.
Good luck!!
Hey there! Good question. In severe cases any raw organic material could attract slugs. But since the pathways are always walked on and therefore compacted, we haven't seen any increase in slug populations. We do have them (both tiger slugs and Spanish slugs) but we also have a very active hedgehog on the property;)
@@1982MCI Hey Don, it's really something I'd like to try. I don't know if it's really practical in a market garden system. We also have to watch out for fresh droppings on (or close to) the production. What breed of ducks do you use for this purpose?
Super om te zien wat jullie daar hebben zeg en in welke regio zitten jullie ergens in france vergelijkbare temperatuur als nederland?
Hey Pierre, wij zitten in the Haute Saône. Erg vergelijkbaar met Nederland. Iets strenger in winter en warmer in de zomer.
@@TheDutchFarmer en de keuze om daar je business was dat je vrouw of omdat het in nederland niet haalbaar is?
Cant wait to get in the garden unfortunately it is -1 deg F here.
Sorry to hear that Pete! Just a little bit more patience! Normally we would have much colder temperatures as well here, but it has been incredibly mild thus far.
Can you please suggest a site from where I can buy seeds for Mircogreens. We live in Cyprus. Thanks
How big is your farm?
How are you growing anything with those trees all around the garden
Magic! :) We plant crops that do well with dappled shade! We use large amounts of organic matter (both compost on beds and woodchips in the pathways). This takes care of the water holding capacity of the soils, fertility and distribution of nutrients throughout the entire system. And most trees we have are not very aggressive tree species. Where we have a large walnut tree, the crops do see some negative effects. Stunted growth, slower growth, mainly due to the large amount of shade the walnut casts on this specific place, and maybe the effects of juglone. We also keep the trees pretty tidy and prune for extra light penetration. Hope that helps!
Hey Moreno!
Love your videos. We are following your footsteps and want to have a small farm in Bretagne north France. I dont suppose I could be cheeky and ask how you're registered with authorities? We've been recommended a Micro BA but 3000€ flat rate per year seems very scary! Did you register as something else or did you face the same and just jump in with a business plan?
Thanks so much 😍
Hey Clarisse thank you! Send an email to moreno@thedutchfarmer.com with the exact same question and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. My wife does most of the legislation side of things (since she's French;) ) So I'll let her explain it to you. All the best!
@@TheDutchFarmer Hi thanks so much ! I emailed a couple of days ago 😊
Do you do wwoofing on your farm at all?

Can anyone recommend some good books for gardening? I am a beginner with 0 knowledge and would like to learn a lot about it for the future.
Hey there, are you looking for personal gardening or more gardening for market related books?
@@TheDutchFarmer thank you for answering. More for personal.
My friend, i see you don't use any toggle. A part the fact they are comfortable, remember to use toggles cause you'll end up with rheumatism at a certan age. Believe me.
Hey Arsenio, I have no idea what a toggle is! Could you elaborate please?

Do you not have issues with brasicas being eaten by birds having them uncovered like that? I find that mine are massacred!
Hey there. No problems with the brassicas. They tend to go for our chards! Simple bird netting will do the trick. In the video you see me installing some fleeces (which also works against birds), but in spring/summer you could use bird netting instead!
@@TheDutchFarmer I've netted mine but too little too late!
In welke provincie woon je?

I thought carrots have a problem to germenate at high temperatures? BUt you planted yours in late summer?! Actually i dont need high tunnels for carrots in march!

Please slow down. You speak so fast your talks are very to follow. M
