I've rode on the Talgo train in Oregon / Washington the Cascades. Has to be the most comfortable train I've been on!!!

Not this Talgo. Was used in local service(commuter) on the Eastern Route. I rode it many times to Swampscott or Salem. The first fare I paid was .97cents to the agent at Swampscott.

Hi Rich, The Talgo sets for B&M and NH were built in 1957/1958. The B&M set was purchased for long haul service, but was put into commute service not too long after they were bought. Craig

Hello, They are an FM P-12-42, there was a pair (one trainset) built for the NH and a pair for the B&M. The NH units were equipped with 3rd rail equipment for use in Grand Central. They were equipped with the 8 cylinder OP normally rated at 1600hp. but 400hp. was tapped for train lighting etc. The front truck (bogie) only was powered. The train consisted of five permanently connected three car sets. I'm researching the bogie arrangement now, I know I've got the material somewhere. Craig

Hi Tim, I believe it's all gone.....the power units went to Leeds,ME to be used as stationary power plants and were cut up at some point, maybe in the early eighties. (What a shame!) I don't know about the cars, I remember seeing some of them from the Mystic River bridge approach (in Boston) probably in the 60's. Craig

I'm surprised there is color film of this!
It was the "Speed Merchant" operating Boston to Portland 1957 to 1964. The locomotives were by Fairbanks-Morse, the train a development of American Car Foundry based on the Talgo II of Alejandro Goicoechea (an unidirectional train operating in Spain 1950 to 1971). New Haven operated a train of the same type, the "John Quincy Adams" between New York and Boston only 1957/1958, the cars were then sold to Spain where they were used on the Ferrocarril de Langreo, a slow standard gauge line, until the early 1983, when the FCL was absorbed into Feve and rebuilt to meter gauge.
One noteworthy fact, the visual design (exterior and interior) of the train is by famous architect and designer Marcel Breuer.

Had no idea these train sets were that old. I thought they were a product of the 80's

I'm not familiar with these locos. Are they FM series or something different? did the Talgo feature a bogie supporting coaches where they meet each other?

I believe that the New Haven's 15 talgo cars (of the "John Quincy Adams") were sold to the Spanish Railways in the early 1960s. the FM power units were scrapped. Cars stayed in service in Spain for another decade or so.
