I think these were the greatest ..loco and car all in one .. no turn around .Just the best. I rode with my mother from Weymouth (Greenbush line) in the late 50's to shop in Boston...I still just love them ..thankyou for letting us see this

Man, love the Budd cars, but that Austin Healey at 5:30 is killer, not to mention the load of logs at Rte 16 crossing in Conway.

Thank you, Craig for posting this. This is the B&M I remember as a kid. I used to ride these back and forth between Bradford and Boston and a bit later from Andover. My cousin used to ride from North Station to Alton Bay where she lived. We took all that for granted and now it's gone.

The Buddliners! What I remember, as a kid, growing up in Portsmouth in the 1950s-early'60s. No malls then. To go to the 'big' stores, Jordan's, Filene's, Raymond's, White's, we'd go to Boston, by train. May not have been the Twentieth Century Limited or the California Zephyr, but, to this kid, it was just as exciting. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks Raymond, Glad you liked it, Other than South Station in Boston, The Budds were the only passenger trains I knew. Craig

Craig - thanks for these great videos, which I just saw via a Facebook page about Beverly & North Shore. I grew up as a child on Shore Rd (formerly Railroad Ave or St) in Winchester, right across the street from the train tracks. They were elevated from street level to a higher overpass in 1956 (the year I was born). Anyway, I used to take the Budd Cars into Boston with my family but also loved to hear the clickety clack of them going by my home many times a day and night. I also loved the sound of the freights late at night - I'd count the cars rather than counting sheep. Later, we moved to Gloucester and I rode the Budds then, too but then (sadly) those new cars came along. I made many friends in the years I commuted Gloucester to Boston - both passengers and train crew including the late Paul Sullivan, engineer killed in the Pride's Crossing wreck - and the conductors on that train. With the exception of the tragic loss of Sully I have nothing but wicked fond memories of the B&M (which it shall always remain to me).

I don't remmber much, but back when my great Grandfather owned Mathewson Corporation in North Quincy, MA during the 60's, 70's and 80's similar RDC budd cars use to run past the shop passing over the Neponset river bridge. The line was on the MBTA's southshore side of the route. If i can ever find it again i found an old picture someone took at that shop on the day the wooden Neponset railroad bridge caught fire. Great vintage video!!!

The fire was set to avoid any chance that the Commonwealth would subsidise the then Old Colony passenger service. As a lovely addition the Army Corps of Engineers offered to rebuild the bridge as a training exercise for free. NYNH&H declined the offer. The passenger service ended in 1959, freight service continued until the fire occured.

The concept behind the Budd RDC has withstood the test of time. A modern version could reduce the operating costs of some rail passenger services, if properly operated.
