Hi Craig, The RS-3 #1536 at (9:32) is switching at "Lynn Sand & Stone Corp." in Swampscott,Ma. on the Eastern Division line. The hilly road in the back ground at (9:55) is Danvers Rd. which will lead to Rt.107 Highland Ave in Salem or west to Lynn the bridge in the back ground going over the Eastern Main is Wood End Rd which leads to Essex St/Loring Ave. which is 50yds away almost at the Salem town line. This location is about 2 miles before Castle Hill yard in Salem,Ma. Also at (4:57) the Alco S Type in "Switcher Black" scheme is crossing the Waters River Trestle bridge at "Danversport". This was my early railfan stomping grounds (1973-78) around Salem, Lynn, Beverly, Peabody and Danvers. There was still a lot of local freight action then and a very long SAED main freight that I would watch every night, sadly its all gone !

Were the SAED and return called the Camel? I lived in East Lynn and a switcher or local freight used to serve Cushman's Bakery, Hoague and Sprague and Durkee-Mower. There were two coal trestles on the Swampscott side of Eastern Avenue one near Monte's the other near the Swampscott station a small yard was between the Swampscott Branch and Lynn Sand and Stone. There were lots of operating employees who lived in Swampscott and Marblehead.

I am 76 now and the B&M is in My family history from a grandfather that was a trainman. to living next to the locomotive yard at wood St. in Lowell.
I road the last passenger train to Boston (only because the schedule diesel broke in the yard (wood St.) and the standby was a steamer, the engineer was introduced to me as Mr. Speed, as a child I am not sure if that was his real name. Today I still have granddad's Pocket watch that he always set with the big clock at Northstation.
My Dad worked at the repair shops at that time until he lost his arm in an industrial accident. Lots of thoughts, lots of years.

Great sights and great music. Hard to imagine that long passenger train at the start didn't have a baggage car.

Around 1:30 you can see the passenger train going under the Main Street tunnel. Surprisingly, this view looks much the same today as it did when the video was taken. I am lucky enough to have appointments every Friday with a person who's office is in the dark building on the lefthand side. He's perfectly happy with me taking out the screen and sticking both my head and camera out the window so i can catch the trains rolling through. Loads of fun when they show up, but lately I haven't seen much. At most, I get two trains. The Amtrak Nortbound Vermonter, or one of the Pan Am jobs that tends to run north from ED on fridays heh. They always end in a line of tankers, and there's almost if not always an empty B&M boxcar to act as a buffer.

@@RedSkeletonGames It's in Greenfield Mass. Apparently at one time it had gauntlet tracks through it. Now it's a single track.
I no longer get to visit the office that gave me a view of the trains, but I got to see a lot of action while I was there!

Too bad there aren't any shots of the McGinnis era 4228 in here- I love than locomotive'S scheme so much, I've decided to do something that ought to have been done years ago- decorate a postwar Lionel F3 in those colors, but retail the classic postwar feel. That scheme would look simply flattering if you were digging through boxes at a yard sale, and saw a box full of dusty old Lionel trains, with that white, blue, and black in flashy Art Deco arrangement, still shining beauty through 50 years of play, and storage. I'm still searching for most of the parts, but I have a shell, and I'll be ordering paint as soon as possible.

I don't know if I have any, however I'm almost sure I've seen film of the Central Mass somewhere. Craig

  • @litlanternproductions1293

Hey great footage! Just curious, would I be able to use some clips from some of your videos in some of my videos? I'm working on a model railroad set in New England in the 1950's, and thought it would be cool to use some old footage of the prototype railroads in the New England area in the intro for the series of videos docum noting its construction. I would be sure to give credit in the description.
    Thank you,-LLP

I'd love to know the dates, locations and trains, especially the passenger trains. I think I recognized the northbound "Ambassador" around 1:10, but that's all.
