Honestly there could have been a lot of fun ideas with the werewolf telepathy thing, especially since aside from Leah and super serious Sam, most of the tribe is a bunch of bros. Have one of them randomly start laughing because one of them makes an inside joke that only the rest of the group knows about because of their mental bond. The closest they got was joking about Jacob’s Bella obsession, which I liked on their half because they were ragging on Jacob as bros do, but I am reminded of Jacob’s creepy crush. In fact have Leah call out Jacob for it because she doesn’t want to be privy to Jacob’s “nice guy” fantasy and that no girl in her right mind would ever want a guy to think of her the way Jacob does with Bella.
That would have been so interesting and fun to read, plus it would make the characters more realistic and come off as friends

@@trinaq Agreed. She could have done LITERALLY anything else with this. Her goal was to make it where Jacob could be a part of Bella's life even without being with her romantically. She could literally have done that ANY other way. If what Stephenie says is true, that there was never anybody else for Bella than Edward, then why not have somebody waiting in the wings for Jacob??? Another single female vampire in the Cullen family, hell, I would have even bought a Leah and Jacob romance. ANYTHING but child grooming!!
Honestly though I think the whole scene with Jacob and (I think its Quil) and his toddler imprintee makes me even more uncomfortable than Jacob imprinting on the baby. Obviously they're both horrible thoughts, idk if it's because they point blank period admit that he's gonna be with that toddler romantically one day. And she's young enough for it to be horrifying yet old enough that she... can be impacted heavily by the trauma we KNOW will come later.. 🤢
Exactly!! I’ve read TONS of fanfics that have come with clever and creative ways to write around the imprinting with or even without the creepy element Jacob and others imprinting on infants/children thing. She could’ve gave Jacob another age appropriate love interest and wrote some other way for the Cullens and the wolves to dissolve their tension and still protect Renesmee. Hell there is even a scene in BD in which Jacob meets a girl his age with the same interest as him but he decides not to pursue it because he’s still attached to Bella (as well as the unborn Renesmee). I mean, people can still be friends without romantic attachments, but unfortunately Meyer always planned for Jacob to end up with Bella’s child, even before NM and Eclipse were written. So she had always doomed him anyways
@@trinaq Hell, how does anyone try to justify it as being okay by saying Jacob won't make the moves on her until Renesmee is of age (which, according to the book - is when she's six!)
Even with the hypergrowth and the ability to - somehow - absorb knowledge from the air around her - Renesmee, by human standards/law, will still be a minor when her physical body reaches a mature age. Being half vampire doesn't change that.

The idea that Leah was the female werewolf and therefore needed to be "sexy and feminine" is so disgusting. She's a fighter with her own trauma and personality, but all that matters is that she's SEXY AS A WOLF????
That clip was from the vfx people. They had no say in the script. Though considering what we got in that department, maybe they should have.
The saddest thing about Leah is that she's treated as less of a woman because she can't get pregnant. Because Meyer, being a Mormon doesn't get that women don't just exist to have kids. There are plenty of women who are happy being single and plenty of couples who don't want kids and are happy with it just being the two of them. There are also women who want kids but can't have them as well. None of them are less of a woman for either not wanting or not being able to have kids.

I honestly hated that, yeah Edward wasn’t exactly the model boyfriend in this case, but he was never dripping with “nice guy” vibes like Jacob was especially in this book. While I can understand not wanting to be Team Edward, but to then say that Jacob was the superior choice just makes it worse because up until the birth of Renesmee (which trust me, I have my own beef with that), Jacob is really creepy when it comes to Bella especially saying that he would rather see her dead than be a vampire which has me genuinely afraid that Jacob would try to murder Bella in order to keep that from happening when I first read the books. He still does bad by forcing a kiss on her and then uses coercion to get her to kiss him a second time. I still like to read the books because they have interesting concepts, but as I have grown older, I have definitely become more aware of the troublesome concepts in the story.

This is just my take on the matter, but Stephanie should have just gotten rid of the whole female wolf shapeshifter can’t make babies and had Jacob and Leah imprint on each other which is where I though they were going. I thought that they were antagonistic towards each other because they imprinted on each other and Jacob was trying to fight it so he could be with Bella, but no, his obsession with Bella is because she had the Renesmee egg inside of her. If we need Renesmee to imprint on someone from the tribe to keep Sam’s crew from ripping out her throat like they wanted to, have her imprint on a younger member of Jacob’s tribe like Seth. Yeah, there is still that weird age gap thing, but he is only in his early teens, not nearly an adult like Jacob was. Also it gets rid of the implication that Jacob only wanted her because one of her eggs would turn out to be his soulmate, just have Jacob confuse friendship with romance. Also I would have gotten rid of the more toxic elements both men displayed, maybe even have Edward think the whole Jacob crush is kind of funny because he does realize that Jacob doesn’t love Bella that way at all because he can read minds and can see that none of Jacob’s thoughts are truly romantic and/or sexual, just a good friend worried about his friend being involved with someone he was taught to be his mortal enemy.
So basically... fix the entire goddamn series?

Edit-Also poor Leah in this scenario, boyfriend leaves her for his Imprint than when she meets her Imprint he doesn't want to be with her. (I mean it could be Jacob in denial about being a wolf but still sad.)
Edit (Again)-Maybe cut Seth's age in half, if he's about 7 when the imprint happens and Ness has accelerated aging they would reach maturity at the same time. (Also shifter puppy.)

Couldn't the imprinting have been written as platonic or familial love like when a baby duck thinks the first person they see is their parent way? Why did Stephanie write it in such a creepy way? Didn't ANYONE point out the implication to her?
It's Meyer being an inexperienced author that wants all the romantic loose ends paired up with Twu Wuv. But by being lazy about it, it becomes horrifying as hell. As to your third question, Meyer said that as her books got more popular she 'had more courage' to say no to her editor. This wasn't so much the case with the movies, as Krimson points out all the improvements it made. Allegedly the Eclipse movie is Meyer's least favourite because of all the changes that made the leads less like assholes.
I guess it's because in supernatural books with shifters "imprinting" is always a romantic soulmates connection, it's just called differently (mating) and thats what she is trying to do in her own book as well, but it's also a connection almost ALWAYS between MATURE participants, so I don't get the baby shit at all...
I think the films try to throw in a line about how the Imprintee determines the relationship as the Imprinter is merely a protector but everywhere else has it be romantic so damage is done.
@@CoolG97 And that goes out of the water too because ultimately, imprinting at its core is about continuing the werewolf bloodline. It is ultimately going to be a romantic, sexual relationship no matter what.
In connection with what Busayo said, I can confirm that editors do not have the final say where publishing is concerned. They can raise a lot of queries, and message higher in the production chain if they are worried about certain content/messages being shown, but it's ultimately the publisher who decides. And they generally will side with the author, especially if they want this author to publish with them.
I'm more than certain that any developmental-editorial concerns would have been ignored.

I'm actually convinced that Jacob was never intended to be a viable romantic interest for Bella, and was originally supposed to stay platonic. But then the readers of New Moon somehow saw the more healthy platonic relationship between Bella and Jacob, realized how much worse Edward was, and started jumping ship to Jacob. Of course, Meyer could absolutely not have anyone doing anything like this because Edward *has* to be the perfect endgame in everyone's minds.
And so, instead of improving Edward and his relationship with Bella, she decides to character assassinate Jacob over Eclipse and Breaking Dawn - to an absolutely horrifying extreme. The fact that she had to explicitly state a retcon of New Moon Jacob - that he was just pretending to be a nice platonic guy just to get her away from Edward kind of sealed this theory in my eyes.
I actually liked New Moon Jacob quite a bit. Not perfect of course (nothing ever could be from Meyer), but actually kind of nice. One decent thing in the boring hell that was New Moon. And the idea of a healthy platonic M/F relationship is honestly one that you so rarely see in the media. So reading Eclipse 10 years ago when it came out, when I was a high school girl genuinely infuriated me. Somehow, Jacob's character assassination pissed me off even more than all the shit Edward does. Because Edward was always a piece of shit and I never expected anything better from him - but Jacob? And that appropriation and defiling of Quileute culture?
That was my breaking point that turned my "weird-leaning negative but ultimately indifferent because it was similar to other trash of a similar kind" opinion to an absolute hatred that just grew - I was a teen girl at the time, and the intended demographic. To see all these other girls in high school actually bring their Team Edward/Jacob bs to the school halls really made me feel like I was crazy. That somehow I was the weird one for not seeing the appeal. So seeing this anger, even a decade later, from reviewers like you and a few others (like Dom Nobel) really feels cathartic.
I think Meyer wanted the love triangle but also didn't want people getting the idea that Jacob actually had a chance. After that things get creepy...It's a personal peeve of mine when writers do this because it's annoying at best and wildly offensive at worst to see a character dragged through the mud for the crime of not being the "real" love interest.
@@CoolG97 I could see that option too, where Jacob was supposed to be the "nice" and "peaceful" potential with no real chance. But either way, fans ended up liking Jacob too much and Meyer ended up assassinating him in the end.
In my head, I've basically mentally rewritten Jacob in one of two ways. First is that he stays exactly as he is in New Moon, a friendly platonic acquaintance without this "imprinting on the baby" bullshit - I actually like the imprinting concept... but absolutely the opposite of this mess.. Second is that he does get a little more toxic a la Eclipse and did have romantic intentions, but the obvious loss of Bella to Edward is a massive wake-up call to him, and like in Eclipse he leaves town. But instead of coming back, he just goes around the world, realizes his mistakes, matures as a person, and finds some other goal of his own. And of course, fanfiction is filled with quite a few amazing authors (fuck EL James, seriously) with rewrites and fix-it ideas that blow Meyer out of the water.
But alas... Breaking Dawn was the mess we ended up with >.>
@@zaramikazuki8374 I prefer the Jacob/Leah fanfics myself, more focus on the wolves, personal growth, and actually talking about the implications of Imprinting. (Only hiccup is Quil and his own questionable Imprintee)
We know that, originally, _Twilight_ was only supposed to have one sequel - _Forever Dawn_ , but when Meyer's publisher insisted on two sequels, she ended up writing _New Moon_ and _Eclipse_ , and putting most of _Forever Dawn_ into _Breaking Dawn_ , with some changes to adjust for plot elements from the middle two novels. So while we may never know exactly how much of what happened to Jacob in _Breaking Dawn_ carried over from _Forever Dawn_ and how much was added in _Breaking Dawn_ , I don't think Jacob was originally intended as a romantic interest.
Also, bear in mind that "Jacob" is the name of one of Stephenie's brothers.

There are so many better ways to write "destined lovers" / ""soulmates" stuff. Even touching on the "immortal creature realizing a bond when the human is too young" can create a good discussion on different species and negotiating the troubles of this kind of connection. But no, Meyer opted for the worst possible options at every turn.
She almost, almost had it in New Moon. When Edward tells Bella that he would let her go as she 'outgrew' him, that would have been such a great moment. Bella afraid of being a burden to Edward as an old woman, and Edward not wanting to burden Bella with an eternally teenage boy. But as always, she missed it.
True, every book I have read about shifters and this "mating-concept" was done so much better than this, I don't get why they just HAD to imprint on babies in twilight...

@@Galaxeah - Again, I would have been less bothered by the “imprinting on babies” thing if the characters actually had a meaningful struggle about it being weird and creepy. Especially with Jacob feeling so “strongly” for Bella. But no, Meyer leans into the process being “beautiful” and “endearing” instead.
I think the biggest factor with it being disturbing is that all of these characters were human or human-raised, so they would have had the cultural concept that “imprinting on a child is creepy.” Meyer wrote them as having very human sensibilities, so I don’t understand why it isn’t more of a problem in general.
If, say, the supernatural creatures were actually so detached from human sensibilities that their whole view of bonded mates is different, then there would be more understandable that it’s not viewed as grooming or disturbing. And again, it could open a dialogue between the non-human character and the human character navigating this cultural divide. But with Meyer’s cast, they are all way too “human,” so more of them should be put off by this “wolf thing.”
@@Rikrobat that is true, you could have a discussion about these things, but the other difference about mating between shifters and humans/other shifters compared to twilight is that it is always (by my experience with books I have read) a connection between matured participants, they have always been of age when that connection even formed and even then, it wasn't an instantly done thing, they always had to complete some kind of ritual to be bonded to one another and the other person was free to say no as well, she really didn't do the concept justice in my opinion.
Stashes of clothes around the forest would've been a better idea than tying a bag around the leg. Wolves here don't seem to have any time limits so surprise sudden nudity shouldn't be much an issue.
I keep wondering: how and where were the bags tied on the leg, considering the wolves shred their clothing when they transform, aka their limbs are far bigger as wolves. Like, you couldn't tie the rope with any sort of tension, less the wolf leg snaps the rope or has its circulation heavily impacted.
Did Meyer seriously not think this concept through even a little bit?

@@CoolG97 - I agree with you on that. I've just been completely baffled by this "bag tied around leg" idea since Krim said it, because of the impracticality of actually tying the rope without cutting circulation or somehow doing it without opposable digits.

Regarding the wolf clothing thing-maybe Meyer could just do what Applegrant did for Animorphs, and say they can transform clothing that’s skintight. Boom-you get fanservice without complete nudity.

The shapeshifter retcon isn't just bad writing and Meyer making shit up to get out of a plothole, it shows how awful the Cullens are. They regularly insult the tribe by calling them 'dog', 'mongrel,' 'animal' etc while knowing that they're not true werewolves (which do exist in this universe and have all but been hunted into extinction because they're the only supernatural creatures that can kill sparklepires) and thus do not deserve that level of animosity. But since they look like wolves, they get treated like second-class citizens due to the Cullens' own prejudice and hate.
Ooh, that's a good point. The Cullens do look much worse now because of that. It's like mocking the victim of a curse that they're not responsible for.

@@KrimsonRogue And it should be pointed out, the Quileutes have legitimate reasons for hating vampires. A vampire nearly wiped out the tribe long ago. Plus vampires are blood sucking monsters, and the tribe are defenders of human life who stand against that. And they hate the Cullens specifically because they only shape shift when there's a large concentration of vampires around.
Not every Quileute has the wolf gene and those that do are sworn to secrecy by the council. Some of the boys in the pack are in trouble with their parents due to them patrolling the borders and they cannot tell them the truth of why they're out all night. They can't go to school, whatever dreams they had have to be put on hold and they can't even age while the Cullens remain in Forks. Hell in the books, Harry's fatal heart attack IIRC was caused by seeing his kids Leah and Seth turn into wolves. Sam also blames the Cullens because once his wolf gene kicked in, he broke Leah's heart by imprinting on her cousin Emily. Who he later maimed when he transformed around her.
Meyer was clearly going for the 'fur vs fang' in Eclipse but all she did was make the Cullens look like the bad guys because they hate the wolves for no reason, and made the pack sympatheyic because their reasons for hating vampires are understandable. And she made it even worse in Breaking Dawn by revealing the Cullens always knew the tribe weren't actual werewolves, but still chose to treat them horribly.

You know, Jacob COULD have been against Bella turning because he truly believes vampires are not even truly alive and that living as one is worse than dying... but he wasn't. He's only against it because it means Bella chose Edward over him.
Imagine, as a real world equivalent, a girl whose boyfriend recently died and she wants to commit suicide to be with him. And this guy doesn't care she's about to throw her life away, he only cares that she's won't be around for him to hit on.

Scottish werewolves and Irish vampires at war is a book I’d read!
They're called Wulvers. They're a very obscure bit of folklore and these days most people outside of Scotland knows of them because they're an enemy type in God of War. They're benevolent wolf creatures but can be violent if offended.

The one thing I hated about the series, besides everything, why was the responsibilities of the pack left to children? That is not fair to ask like an eleven year old to die for this one wood plank of a girl, who they only saw from a far. Also I hate everything with how they treat Leah and the real Native American tribe in this waste of paper.
it's even worse in breaking dawn, where in the climax, a ton of young kids are conscripted into the werewolf pack, and are only mentioned so bella can feel angry about it for a bit, and never come up again
In-universe explanation is because they can apparently age out of the shifting ability but shifting also slows aging. Like all explanations for this series it's lazy, confusing, and just raises more questions.

There is something very interesting about non sexual partner soul mates, but it takes an immense amount of tact and nuance to effectively do this without it completely failing.
Something that even Harry Potter fanfic writers have grasped.
Sadly tact and nuance was not Jakes strong point. Him asking Edward if he can call him dad pretty much give everything away.
If it were me, I’d explain the Wolf thing as a curse or at least maybe include some of the mythology of the tribe the wolves are based on

I’ve seen people trying to use Hebrew to make something more ancient and arcane than it is. The difference is that usually when we see those things, it’s hilarious and doesn’t get one woman a few million dollars.
It usually results in a dude thinking that he has the Hebrew word for strength on his arm when it really is just the word “Matzoh” in Hebrew

From ALices vision of the future at the end of Breaking Dawn, Jacob and Nessie seem happy. I guess that sort of qualifies as a happy ending, if you ignore all the horrible elements which got them to that point.
Impringint is messed up on so many levels, but in every instance we see they end up happy together.

You know, in Dominic Noble’s video, he talked about how the Quileutes are treated in the story... Yikes...
I remember absolutely hating Stephanie Myer when I was young but then years later shrugging my shoulders and saying "Hey, It's not my cup of tea but if there are people out there who like her stuff, to each their own." THEN through Dominic Noble's videos discovering that this woman took a real group of people who are currently suffering, made up a whole bunch of stuff about how grooming little girls is normalized in their culture and they STILL didn't get a dime from having their name used to make millions.
Now I'm back to thinking this author can go get punched in the face.

I (not an English speaker) read eclipse the english version when I was in high school, and I didn't understand a lot of the story. Then I read the novel in my language, and I can't remember anything from the book. And now I feel like you can just skipped the third book and the plot still makes sense.

First time I watched this I wished Riley had been one of Bella's school friends who was turned and manipulated by Victorria. It could have caused added conflict for Bella. It would show her what could be her own fate and what that choice would mean to those who love her as the town deals with his disappearance and death. Maybe even when he disappears members of Sam's pack believe it was the Cullens violating the treaty leading to the breakdown of their group.

That imprinting thing should have been one of those things that got a rewrite. Either rewriting the rules of it so that they can only imprint on legal aged partners or written out entirely. If you want to show them imprinting on younger you have to treat them as the predator the readers are possibly going to perceive them as not the normal way.
Films later try to retcon it to mean that it's JUST a protector role, but there are literally no platonic examples and even joke about it so it's damaged beyond fixing.
The Dark Souls soundtrack in the background strangely enhanced the video for me. Good choice lol

Here's a quick fix for the wolf clothes issue. Just make the fur their clothes. Black fur = Black shirt and pants. Easy
Not to defend the series, but "lycan" could work for how you describe the Twilight wolves. The wolves in "Underworld" are themselves classified as "lycans" because of how transforming works in their world.

After watching this reviews several times, it amazes me how much real effort went into the filmaking of this adaptations. Seriously, the CGI departemnt trying their best to make the wolfes stand out, the amount of times they outright cut the fat of the books to replace it with better exposition, how much they toned down the more creepy scenes to make them more digestible(even if it didn't always work,but some of those scenes are unfixable without a full revision of the """ plot""")... They really, REALLY tried hard to make the movies at least watchable, but alas, you can't turn shit into diamonds, not even with a Philosopher's stone (a small FMA joke, sorry XD)
Okay but hear me out.
In the mythology or the tribe, it says the people came from wolves originally. Now what if one of their protective spirits or gods maybe (which would obviously need more research than this comment) allowed the tribe to reaccess the form of their ancestors as protection from the vampires.
Why was it that hard to include something like this?!
That COULD work, so long as theirs something like this in their beliefs, and consent is given from the tribes.
Otherwise, it’d be like portraying Jesus as a Drug-Dealing Pimp.

Honestly, first time i got introduced to twilight was watching parts of Eclipse with my older brother, and he just gave me explanation of how vampires have super speed and strength and some can sustain themselves by drinking animal blood instead of human;
and this intriguied at first because it was my firsr showed that vampires, usually depicted as malevolent monsters, can be good or heroic (in this universe), so i wanted to see more of this series, and for a time iI liked it because i was young and gullible and didn't see any of the toxic messages until I started wathcing Krimson's videos of it.
In short, i don't particularly hate this series, but I am really disappointed them, because they have so much wasted potential.
If you think we've gotten to the toxic part of Eclipse, then brace yourself because the next three videos are going to be especially damning.
The movies also helped save the economy in Forks.

I’m confused why Meyer has an age gap in so many of her books, Bella and Edward, Jacob and the Demon baby, the two from her book Host. Does she know that an age gap (including minors with significantly older men particularly, WHICH IS ILLEGAL) isn’t necessary for a romance....? I read these books when I was 12 because my mom said they were good (I don’t know what she read but it apparently wasn’t the same book if it was good) and was just extremely creeped out by Edward and Jacob. Why is the main love interests a stalker who is quite controlling and a manipulative pedo?
I'll give her somewhat of a break for Bella and Edward, since YA vampire fiction normally has these sort of age gaps. Buffy with ANgel or Spike, Elena with Stephan or Damon, etc.. That's sort of almost expected.
No real reason it needed to happen in the host though.

Considering I never knew the Wolves in this could transform at any time... I'm going to have to consider them as Skinwalkers who all choose to become wolves instead of any kind of animal... except that a Navajo belief instead of a Quileute one. Unless there is a comparable story in their culture. I don't know, would just be a guess.
And I wrote this comment before the "man made from wolves" bit in this video. So I have learnt something new today at least.

I feel like the whole “imprinting” thing could’ve been fixed if it only works if:
- You and your soulmate are both underage and similar in age.
- If not, you don’t know they aren’t until they hit puberty and pheromones.
Is that still “icky”? Yes.
But I’d rather have him fall in love with the girl when she’s 13 years, instead of yknow, 13 days...
They can even mention how he thinks Bella is the one because she’s his first love and he hasn’t yet felt it.
Jacob imprinted on Bella‘s egg cell that eventually becomes her daughter. He never really loved Bella herself. Stephanie Meyer on record said that.

Imprinting could’ve worked if it was something where a werewolf can imprint on a person, but instead of romantic feelings, it’s just very strong feelings of loyalty and protectiveness. It can happen where a werewolf and the person they imprinted on (who isn’t too young or isn’t too old) can fall in love.
There I just (hopefully) fixed the imprinting bs without making it creepy. It literally wasn’t too hard.
Meyer's idea is handled better in Wendy Pini's Elfquest. Recognition only happens with adults, and it's only there to produce exceptional children. Some couples stay together after mating, some don't. It's not something that takes over your whole life.
