IMO, it's a mark of a good writer, or one that is actively thinking about what would make for good writing, by constantly questioning if certain aspects make for bad writing, such as bell-for-brains believing she *_has_* to choose either edwardo or jacobi, and her not realizing that both are painfully dumb choices.
Meyer on the other hand, if she were actually a good writer, would've questioned what she wrote, and ultimately, many things in the Twilight series would not been written, if the series at all.

Then she’s forced to feel how “perfect” their relationship is in her mind! And every time she objects, everyone peer pressures her and Sam uses bullshit abuser powers to silence her! Sam won’t even let her leave the pack, seemingly content to let her stay there in pain for the rest of her life! When she does leave, he gets one of his lackeys to use emotional abuse (calling her by a pet name he used to use) to get her to come back! She’s the only female “warewolf” and it’s just an excuse for Meyer to abuse her because “she’s only a warewolf because she’s not “woman” enough”! Whether it's 2 straight men, a straight man and a straight woman, 2 gay men, 2 lesbian women, 2 bisexual people and all of them shippers believe friends are just potential couples in denial apparently. The Supernatural fandom for example were convinced that Sam and Dean Winchester, 2 straight brothers were secretly a gay incestuous couple to the insane extent they thought Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki their actors were too and that they were using their wives as beards. They weren't. The fans spouted bullshit about "gay coding and subtext" that supposedly "proved" it when really they just wanted Sam, Dean and Castiel to bang and were pulling anything out of their ass to justify their fantasies. But according to shippers telling them that a straight character isn't gay is apparently homophobia. It isn't. They just whine "I want them to be gay damn it therefore they are."

      @angelikaskoroszyn8495 Před 3 lety +43

Tbf many gay fanfic relationships are more developed and interesting than canon het relationships. Idk why but movie writers don't really know how to develop romantic interest between characters. Since there's often more chemistry between (e.g.) two male friends / rivals than an MC and his girlfriend shipping happens
The most famous example is Draco and Harry. Both in books and movies their relationship was more developed than between Harry and Ginny. At least in the books Ginny's character was a little bit more developed but it was still nothing in comparison to Draco
There's also the lack of gay representation creating a demand but that's another thing

It would’ve been better if Jacob was just Bella’s childhood friend - who’s human btw - who had a crush on her and saw all the red flags Edward displayed and as a result, wanted her to break up with him. It wasn’t so he could get with Bella himself, but rather he wants her to be happy. This way this whole love triangle/character assassination doesn’t happened.
I would also like to rewrite Victoria's power as well as how vampires get powers in general.
First Vicky. I'd like her power to be essentially spidey-sense. She can sense danger and evade, which would make her jumping over Jacob more interesting/more believable.

It seems like the overwhelming trend in popular YA fiction is to have a love triangle that really isn't a triangle at all. The option is almost always obvious. It feels like giving the readers more choice to pick a male character they can develop feelings for, rather than presenting the protagonist with an actual choice.

    • @noelbernabe8704
      @noelbernabe8704 Před 2 lety +2

But that's the funny thing about Twilight. It was perhaps the most obvious lopsided love triangle I had ever seen in fiction up to that point, as it was ridiculously obvious who Bella would choose. Yet despite that, it has become arguably the most iconic love triangle in modern fiction. Readers apparently did make choices on which male protagonist to support almost DESPITE the narrative. I always was suprised how Meyers was able to pull that off.
But for what it's worth, I actually liked that Bella wasn't indecisive or flipping back and forth between her choices. She knew who she wanted, stuck with that person, and made her opinon for the most part clear to readers and her suitors. It would bother me more if she had flipped flopped and kept changing her mind. She STILL bothered me in a lot of ways, but at least he straight up told Jacob where he stood.

Personally I had an idea in my head about a Vicky confrontation in the previous book. It also makes Bella less pathetic too. Bella jumps off the cliff to escape Vicky, well not exactly escape.
In my version Bella's grown past her hallucinations and need for danger to get them (and Jacob as well in favor of a half sister character I made up, but that's a whole other beast for another time.) and is just out for a hike/picnic while enjoying the view of the ocean. She finds it peaceful. That's when Vicky shows up.
Vicky corners her, but rather than just killing her right then and there, Vicky toys with her for a bit, getting pleasure out of seeing her prey scared. That's a character flaw of both her and James, they like playing with their food before going in for the kill. It's a reason they fell for each other in the first place.
However Vicky gets distracted by the scent of the wolves for a split second, which gives Bella just enough to jump off of the cliff. Also in my version cliff diving for fun off that cliff in particular isn't a thing. She never saw Sam and the others do it, so as far as she's concerned jumping is basically suicide especially given the weather at the time.
Basically Bella knows she can't get away but rather than letting herself be horribly killed she chooses to to take her life into own her hands and jumps fully expecting to die. She doesn't like either option and doesn't want to die, that's made very clear in the text, but by jumping at least her death is on her own terms rather than giving Vicky the satisfaction of making her her lunch. It's just pure luck that Jake saves her (and as I mentioned before she's actually grown distant towards him in favor of my Original Sister character, whom she'd have a much healthier relationship with (but again another beast for another time)) so she honestly doesn't even really know what the hell Jake's been up to or where he is.
It's kinda similar to what Peeta said to Katniss the night before the first Hunger Games, he wants to die as himself.
It's just a rough idea but since Krim shared his rewrite, I thought I'd share mine. .

Scream's Billy Loomis would be seen as a misunderstood lad who just needed a shoulder to cry on after his mother abandoned him. They think the fact that Lily Evans later Potter was his friend for years meant she had to go out with and have sex with him and that being abused as a child and bullied at school somehow entitles him to sex and a relationship out of pity. It doesn't. They say James Potter "stole" Lily from Snape, talking about her as if she was a possession that belonged to the greaseball. Snape fans treat Lily starting to date James after he grew up a bit, became less arrogant, stopped hexing people for the hell of it and so on as cruel torment because James not liking their little Sevvie poo makes him an irredeemable monster on the level of the likes of Freddy Krueger, The Joker, Michael Myers, Claude Frollo and Dexter's Trinity Killer.

@@CoolG97 It's why I don't buy Rowling's last minute attempt to portray Snape as some tragic hero in Deathly Hallows. At Hogwarts he was a bully who hung around with people who did far worse than James and Sirius did to him, said using dark magic on innocent students was a laugh, "thanked" Lily for stopping James from bullying him by calling her a filthy little Mudblood, wanted to and eventually did join the Death Eaters who wanted to kill Lily and all Muggleborns like her and thought she'd be impressed by that. As a Death Eater he probably did horrible things to loads of innocents. Then there's him admitting to Dumbledore that he asked Voldemort to kill James and Harry so he could have Lily to himself proving his so called "love" for her was an obsession. And he only wanted Voldemort dead because him killing Lily meant he couldn't use the deaths of a grieving wife and mother's husband and son to get her to love him. He didn't feel guilty about his Death Eater crimes or want to make up for them. If Voldemort had gone after Neville Snape would have been a loyal Death Eater until the day he died. He's a villain working with the heroes against a bigger villain, not the hero, anti hero or morally grey or ambiguous character Rowling treats him as.

Because Snape had wanted Voldemort to kill the Longbottoms so in Snape's manchild mind Neville had to be punished for Voldemort not choosing to kill him and his parents. I'll always stand by the belief that Rowling was going to reveal that Snape had been loyal to Voldemort all along and that him killing Dumbledore was originally a cold blooded murder. Then while writing Deathly Hallows she decided to give Snape a cliche backstory involving childhood abuse and the whole "creepy obsession with Lily Rowling wants us to believe was love" as his reason for switching sides. Dumbledore's burned hand was changed so that it carried a curse that would slowly and painfully kill him in a year's time and the kill was retconned into Snape putting Dumbledore out of his misery.

The idea that this whole book is "Team Edward" or "Team Jacob" is stupid. I'd say I'm "Team Bella", but really, I'm more "Team Everyone Else" at this point. The worst part is that I'd be willing to deal with (and honestly even enjoy) dark relationships if portrayed fairly and not romanticized, and if the action sequences/climax was passable. Even that was a fail - only Breaking Dawn has this beat. I'm just going to continue pretending that when Edward left in New Moon, everything ended, Bella returned to normal, Jacob remained a normal friend, and everyone - especially Leah, that poor lady - had their happily ever after.
In other news, I jumped into Twilight fanfiction, and my god are the fans way better. They took all the lost potential, did some cool rewrites, major fix-its, almost universally dumped both the Bella/Edward and Bella/Jacob ships - Bella/Rosalie and Bella/Alice were the most popular (I assumed Alice would be the winner, but apparently it was Rosalie), with Bella/Jasper and Jacob/Edward not too far behind. Heck, even rarepairs like Bella/Carlisle and Bella/Leah showed up a bit more than either canon pair. And every single one of those pairs is actually portrayed in a healthier way, actually had chemistry, gave Bella an actual personality, agency, and friends. I'd even argue that all of those platonic pairs had more chemistry in canon than the supposed romantic canon pair. Ah yes, and actually half-decent plot lines, making the Volturi the genuine threat that Meyer could only wish she'd thought of. The fans are more fans of the world setting rather than the books, and hey - props to them. Really, it's a wild ride and I'm having fun...

It doesn't fixed Imprinting but it does talk how messed up it is at least.

But what really won me over with that fic was the explicitly platonic and very cute bromances that Bella has with Edward and Jacob - actually healthy and light-hearted friendships that still take the situation seriously, and the ship was actually a healthy dynamic and the Volturi were actually a threat. Heck, I even read an imprinting fic too - one where Jacob imprints on Edward and actually has a major mental crisis, given that werewolves and vampires stand in opposition - actual relationship tension. Thanks so much for these videos Krimson, as someone who wants to write a story with a potential romance, there's a LOT that I got to look out for. For starters, I rather that the two main leads in my story start off as friends whose personalities play off each other. Its tapping into subverting the brooding and the whimsical pairing trope and for the most part, I'd prefer to focus on their friendship, putting romance second or even third. Whatever happens happens. It's actually an interesting idea if they ended up NOT being together but still chilling as close friends, showing respect, boundaries, and learning to move on. Now I dont KNOW if this is where the path will inevitably lead, but it's a fun idea that I could explore in another story.
Thanks for suffering these books for us and giving us the scope of avoiding bad takes on relationships, hope you recover from the hellish experience!

It's always baffled me that while SMeyer was clearly trying to appeal to some vague superhero angle by making all the special vampires have special powers, but most of the powers in question are lame like "sensing relationships" and there's barely any troperiffic but intimidating powers like telekinesis or shapeshifting or glamouring.

We started to see more intimidating powers in Break Dawn. But I think if there's too much emphasis on the gifts, it starts to take away from the feeling that it's a vampre story.
I always thought Vampre Academy for example felt almost more like the Last Air Bender than a vampre story.

Thought I just had. It would have been an interesting twist that edward was at least of the bloodline of a wolf pack and that's why he has mind reading powers and is so distrusting of werewolves.

"No, you try to make everyone else happy. "
    Funny that :-D
When has she EVER made ANYTHING except things that make HER happy? She didn't think about anyone else when she decided she's in love with Edward and wants to be a vampire with him for ever and ever and ever and ever.
She didn't think about her parents.
She didn't think about her classmates one bit.
She just decided what everyone else would want, and went by it, without ever actually asking what others might want.
That Alice "got" to play with the wedding and plan it and all, that was only because she didn't give a crap about it.
I hate that kind of "mommypulation". "I am sacrificing myself for YOUR HAPPINESS; so you better do everything I want!"
I suppose it's people who think mommypulation is something admirable, wannabe mommies, who love these books.

The only reason Meyer portrays Bella as this kind and selfless person who never thinks of herself only others is because Bella is her self insert and that's the type of person Meyer thinks she is. When in reality Bella only cares about herself, expects others to care about her when she doesn't care about them, treats her dad awfully, calls her friends evil traitors for not putting up with her Edward obsession and so on. Much like Meyer's a womanchild who called publishers who rejected Twilight mean, bragged about "taking the high road" in regards to the rejections, couldn't handle criticism and asked her brother to delete it, on the set of the first Twilight film even when Robert Pattinson wasn't filming scenes in character she tried to force him to pretend to be Edward and kept calling him by the character's name and when he'd had enough and said "My name is Robert" she threw a tantrum and tried to have him fired because he wouldn't play along with her sad little fantasy. She treated a human being like he was a doll in her dollhouse and yet acted like she was the one who'd been wronged.

"She has to consider who to chose and what she has to give up." Ideally, being in a relationship doesn't mean giving up anything you truly care for. In a healthy relationship, you can keep doing all the things you loved doing being single. Why force yourself to give something up just so you can fit into someone elses life? When will these people learn that you can be just as happy being single as you can be in a healthy relationship. However, if you enter a relationship needing the other person to make you happy, it's a recipe for disaster. Because noone wants the responsibility of being the only person that keeps someone happy.

There are normal things to give up, basically complete control over shared things and decisions about them. Who pays the rent/mortgage? Or how much does each pay? If you go out for the night, you give up not needing to let someone know you’ll be gone. Things of that nature. This is why people who are crazy attracted to each other and in love will still wait a while before diving it. There are things that merge and become shared.
But there shouldn’t be sacrifices about who someone is, or giving up anything major. Giving up your family? Total control of your life? Yeah, no.

Lucky thing about Bella is she basically got everything she wanted without having to give anything up. She got to be a vampire while still being able to marry and have a child with Edward, while still keeping Jacob and Charlie in her life.
It's why Twilight, as ugly as it got, can technically be viewed as wish fullfilment.

The more videos I watch of people reviewing these books, the more I’m convinced that subconsciously Meyer wrote a story about what it’s like to become a Mormon.

Could you maybe not insult other people’s religion? Even as someone raised in and still active in that particular faith these books have always seemed unappealing, and people assuming I would be a fan just because I’m a Mormon who likes reading has been a source of great frustration.
The story isn’t bad because the author is Mormon, they’re bad because she isn’t a good writer and has horrible ideas about what’s romantic.

Meyer definitely wrote convincing manipulation, brain washing, gaslighting, and abuse. And never noticed. Can't help but feel that these were true to her own life. Remember, Bella is a placeholder for herself. But whether this is because of her experience with Mormonism or from other life events or both is just speculation.

@@dustincompton992 For one it’s the commenter’s opinion, not fact.
For another, regardless of how you personally feel about Mormonism, it has frequently been described as a cult with many deeply unhealthy attitudes toward relationships. I won’t force evidence on you but it is there if you feel like looking.
Maybe Meyer is just a bad writer and it has nothing to do with her faith. But that doesn’t invalidate the opinion of the original commenter.

@@dustincompton992 Mormonism has been open about how white skin is a sign of favor and dark skin is sin. Black people weren’t even allowed until the late 1970’s. A literal outright racial ban. Mormonism is an EXTREMELY problematic religion founded by a scammer who was backed into a corner and killed by some of his pissed off followers who’d had enough.
If you don’t like hearing that, then maybe you should reconsider your beliefs. I left Scientology because I listened and couldn’t make reasonable counterpoints and then it all fell into place one night at the center, so I literally walked out and never went back.
And while you’re at it, maybe you should think about how problematic it is to go to other countries to try to push your religion onto disadvantaged people and how disrespectful it is to go accost people at their homes to try to get them to convert. You don’t have to talk about insult when it comes to religion, not when your religion has taken it upon itself to force itself onto others who aren’t asking. YOU have participated in this. Two years of mission, I believe?

Marcus’s “relationship detector” was solely to tell the audience how SUPER DUPER SPECIAL AND STRONG Edward’s and Bella’s “love” is. Quotes on that since it’s obsession they have, not love. She smells incredibly tasty to him, and he’s “gorgeous” and can turn her into a vampire. That’s what their “love” is. Literally. That’s all.
And the “hickey of death.” I think the book described is as Edward “kissed her head off” or something. “Kiss” was part of it.

I kind of liked Vicky's power. Though I maybe interpret it differently that Meyer intended. Vicky's power, to me, was that if there was a way to escape danger, then she would instinctively know of it. And that makes her essentially impossible to catch, since she can outmanoeuvre everyone and everything. And this posed a challenge to Cullens and wolfs, since only way to deal with Vicky is to make her ignore her own power. Ergo, piss her off enough, that she will ignore magical alarm bell until it's too late.
