Yeah, first time around he's saying highs he dodges, lows he misses. That's fair, as close to ten means he dodges if he's attacked, and hits if he's attacking. Reverse if it's closer to one, gets his if attacked and misses if attacking. Switching it to the reverse is just cheating. Especially him saying the 0 on a d10 is actually 0. I also saw this story before. Don't know if it was ever stated what his Blink item was, but if it's his gun, like the gun shown in the animated image being used, I'd allow for some creative use of Blink.

A very stupid TPK but everyone had a good laugh, despite feeling a bit bitter.

  • @OGNoNameNobody
    @OGNoNameNobody Před 4 lety +244

    The player in question made THREE(3) clear mistakes;
    1) They were CLEARLY up to Shenanigans(TM), with an INTENTIONALLY confusing phrase syntax "X I miss, Y I am missed" instead of an unambiguous 'X I miss, Y they miss'. The player clearly got some 'fun' out of the Cheat Choo-Choo, but, as soon as the GM caught them by the tail(tale?), a simple *APOLOGY* to the GM(and maybe even the other players) would have gone leagues in smoothing things over, PERHAPS even preventing the GM's eventual 'quasi-trap'.
    2) The "0" on a d10 is only a "Zero" is the event of a *percentile roll* (commonly labeled d%). If you wish your d10 "0s" to mean "zero", you MUST clear this with your GM, and you must be ABSOLUTELY SURE you want to do this(nothing sucks worse than rolling "Zero" damage on a successful hit!)
    3) The biggest miss of all, under the assumption the player's character was NOT under the Blink effect before initiative was rolled: The player was a 1st order n00b-scrub activating a Blink spell as soon as the enemy was identified as "Phase Spiders". This decision is what cemented a "justifiable PC homicide" for me, as the glaring display of lack of game mechanic knowledge was inexcusable.

So I got him to start writing them down every game. One game the party was attacked by a couple awaked trees. My first attack on him Nat 20 and I one shot him. His first death save. Wouldn’t you know Nat 20. Second round on him another Nat 20. I got three Nat 20’s that fight that where only on him. He was up and down like a yo-yo. He seemed to always get a Nat 20 on saves. i've cheated one time as a player, and it was when our DM was being a total douche canoe and using the PC table talk to intentionally thwart our plans on his encounters with the metaknowledge he knew about what we were doing. I was the only other veteran besides the DM at a table of new players. the way i cheated was OOC knowing the weakness of the enemies and exploiting it, he was a by the book dm... so changing stat blocks and fudging rolls was not his thing, but his monsters being omnipotent was fine apparently.
our mission was to investigate a crypt that had recently unearthed and clear it of any undead. having no cleric or paladin and a bunch of PCs with high stealth, we decided to sneak into the crypt and deal with each undead one at a time to be safe. entering the crypt quietly we get about 30 feet into the first room when a monster just happens to waltz in and charge our wizard.
it was a minotaur skeleton that somehow knew about us secretly entering the crypt despite our good stealth rolls and the crypt being a large maze, having had enough of his bullshit and being a low level druid i summoned 8 constrictor snakes to wrap up and crush the monster.
every attack of my summoned snakes hit and i rolled high on damage (we put all the snakes on their own turn collectively for bookkeeping). doing the numbers and telling it to the DM. (i doubled the total in my head i knew it was likely be fatal to the minotaur skeleton). i watched as the DM realized what that damage type was and what amount of damage i had just done to it.
he said that i had killed it and then asked me how i knew what would hurt it the most. he was suspicious of me since i was a veteran player, all i said to him was "how did a monster with low passive perception, and shit intelligence instantly know of our plan to quietly enter this crypt and attack our glass cannon first instead of our frontline fighters were closer?" effectively calling him out in front of the other players.
he looked at me stunned knowing i caught him red handed, tried to make up and excuse but i was not budging, i simply said to him when i got his attention "next time we plan our moves, you will have to leave the room until i call you back"

      Yeah, the only exception is if it's a percentile D10 (being rolled with another normal D10). In that case, it'd be 00, which would mean a 0 in the 10's place (90 + 0 being 100, and 00 + 0 being 10).

My 3 Dice Rules when I DM:
#1: Always call your dice when you make a roll if what you need to roll (high/low) is not specified.
#2: You roll your dice on a flat portion of the table where everyone can see them; otherwise, the roll doesn't count.
#3: You leave your dice where they are after the roll so I and other players can see them, not quickly snatching them back up, or else the roll doesn't count, with you get an auto-penalty against your character if it's a roll I DM call you to make specifically.
These are my "Rules of Honest Dice" that all players must abide by when I DM. Refuse, and you can find another campaign to play. Fake agree and, fail to heed the 2 warnings I give you, your character is auto-killed by 'divine intervention' and you are booted from the game. You may return for the next session if you apologize and honestly agree to abide by the rules. Fake again, you get no warnings, lose your character, and told to leave and never return.
    I will not abide cheaters.

I have a some ideas for that “divine intervention” if it was a fate worse than death
A.) Trap them in a room where they always lose a combat encounter because the creature they’re fighting has immunities to all damage types they can use.
B.) Make them eternally silenced, making them unable to abuse social interactions
C.) Eternally chain them in place, making their character technically still usable, but unable to do anything

If a player in a campaign I was hosting tried to cheat with the dice by making sure no-one could see what number came up, and claimed it was a high number like a nat 20, I'd deal with it by turning that high roll they claimed to have gotten AGAINST them; here's an example:
Me: You need to get to the lever that lowers the castle drawbridge and raises the portcullis to allow the rest of your party in; the guard captain is the only one with the clearance to enter the tower room in which the lever lies.
Future dice cheating rogue: I climb the tower leading to the guard barracks from the blind spot up against the castle wall.
Me: You climb into the guard Captain's room through the window, the ONE opening to the room from the outside, and creep up behind the guard captain, who's still awake, planning the next raid; they're not wearing their helmet, but it's resting on the desk on their right hand side.
Future dice cheating rogue: I knock them out with my warhammer.
      Me: Roll your d20.
Dice cheating rogue: (rolls die, and snatches it up before anyone can see what number came up) I got a nat 20.
Me: your warhammer makes a loud CRACK when it strikes the back of the guard Captain's head, and their head collapses to the map on their desk; blood gushes from the point at which you struck them, and drips from the head of your warhammer. As you turn around to try to escape through the window, a tile below your feet presses down, and a window sizes portcullis slams shut, cutting your one escape route off; the guards in the barracks just outside the Captain's room, woken by the crack, and further alerted by the sound of the portcullis slamming shut, break the door down. They see the guard Captain's head on the desk in a pool of their own blood, and see the bloody warhammer in your hand. One guard that's still in the barracks sounds the alarm, alerting the rest of rest of the guards in the castle, and the guards in the room surround you; before you can react, one strikes your head with his mace, knocking you out, and the guards carry you off to the castle torture chamber, where the castle Lord will interagate you for information on your party's whereabouts. Your party now has a choice; try to sneak in and rescue you, or flee for their own lives.
Dice cheating rogue: I call FOUL on that!
Me: That's how I call foul on DICE CHEATING; count your stars I didn't just have the mace blow KILL your character. Hopefully this'll teach you a lesson.

he can dismiss the spell himself...
    blink duration 1 rnd/lv (D)
    (D) Dismissible
If the Duration line ends with “(D),” you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell’s effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell’s verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
A spell that depends on concentration is dismissible by its very nature, and dismissing it does not take an action, since all you have to do to end the spell is to stop concentrating on your turn.

YIRBEL LIVES! Serves that cheater right for being a bastich about people calling him out. In any case since I already used my spider story I’ll have to use my scorpion story instead. Our party had found our way into a dessert and were paid by a town to destroy a giant scorprion nest after defeating a few that invaded the town. From an earlier adventure we had gotten ourselves this fancy magic liquid that Explodes with green fire like that game of thrones episode, so luckily all we gotta do is get some into the nest. Our paladin comes up with a plan to mask our presence with scorpion pheromones so we go around looking for a stray and since he rolls a nat 20 he manages to perfectly kill the drone and pull out its pheromone bladder.
It works so well he’s basically makes a scorpion conga lime right into the cave. However the Gergantuan alpha scorption starts getting jealous and begins to maliciously snapping at him so he leaves the explosives and rushes out. The tinier scorpions die but the alpha manages to dig into the sand and escape the blast and we had to fight him. One of our best boss fights!

There was a cheater in the one group I play in (before my time with said group.). One of the things he did was "make" bad rolls - as in he'd state that he rolled poorly when he had done well - said bad rolls resulted in a dwarf, who didn't have the best luck to begin with, and couldn't jump all that well, to develop a serious fear of heights because the cheat "failed" to catch the guy (or didn't throw him with enough strength - I wasn't there so I'm not sure). Eventually, they left for one reason or another (or got kicked). Ironically, the DM didn't know that he'd cheated like that until one of the others recently mentioned it.
That being said, I know that I don't know all of the rules, but I try not to intentionally cheat - granted, if say I role an 18, or even a 20, on an information-gathering skill-check that requires 2-3 skills (or more) I'll at least state what I got so that if the other slots are covered, I can at least fill in that needed third slot.

Definitely. Some of the most fun I've ever had in dnd was through failure. I'm not a huge fan of playing straight-forward heroes, so I'm very comfortable with my characters making mistakes and playing into their flaws. Maybe it's because of my love of Vampire: The Masquerade and other World Of Darkness settings; in those settings failure is more of an alternate path than a loss.
I still think one of my all time favourite memories in DnD was when my naive cleric who believed in helping anyone in need who asked for assistance, regardless of their morality/circumstance, was successfully manipulated by a beholder into freeing it thanks to some low saving throws on my part and high skill throws to not be stopped by the party. The DM rolled for who to target and what beam to use in front of the board and, due to luck of the dice, I was immediately attacked with a disintegration ray and killed instantly. It sucks to roll a new character, but it felt like a deserved end for the cleric.

Oh man, this reminds me of a player who joined us for a single session.
Everything seemed to be going really smooth, the players didn't have an issue with him but he showed himself to be rebellious to my methods minutes in the game.
So much so that I had to get very strict with him about the methods in which I conduct my sessions.
I'm a very lenient DM, but I do not take to open provocations of public defiance. Because of this, It forced my hand and revealed the hammer hidden behind my kindness.
He didn't approve of this, of course.
The other players continued to play and agreed with my methods to cut short any Meta gaming. All of my Player are explained the rules which I impose.
During the game, to facilitate and keep the game smooth, I allow no BS or rebellious behaviours. If you dislike or disapprove of something I did in the session, players may contact me afterwards to discuss it and if I have anything to improve upon, I'll invest the hours to improve myself.
And so far, each players have found this to be true. I truly listen and take the time.
But this one player refused this approach.
And so, the game is continuing and everyone is getting along nicely!

That slightly moving image is... unsettling.

At my table we are new to DND. To keep it fair I just say whatever you can do don't forget the enemies will be able to do. We all absolutely love playing together, but we are not well-versed in the rules. This helps keep things Fair on the Fly.
1 time our sorcerer was wanting to cast spells while hiding behind an object. Because the spell they were casting did not specifically say that line of sight was needed to cast a spell. I simply said okay that's fine, but just remember that everyone else that uses the spell will have the same advantage.
Once again, she was not trying to bend the rules we were just not well versed. It resolved a conflict that never had a chance to begin.
This a good protection against OP and it also helps with expectations for the game and gameplay.
I would have just brought a whole bunch of characters from his past into the storyline that have the same blink magical item.
After 3 hours of nobody dying it would get old. Of course, this would probably prevent the thing from happening all together
