      We were trying to set up a huge multi army war. Lots of goblins in the first session, like well over 50 within half an hour. My character of course is a female half elf fighter with a blacksmithing background. Both parents blacksmithed and I took on the same profession. Which was why I had 2 swords of exquisite quality.
      On every subsequent roll I was rolling 1's and 2's and dropping my swords. So many times that I eventually wrote it into her backstory they were magiked by the mother to not fall from hands if I wanted so.
      Meanwhile our other players frail healer druid hermit with no battle background is slaughtering dozens. The little girl came out with the highest kill count by at least a 10 point lead, all with a bo staff.

    As a DM, I love it when players have some romantic story to them -- it is always more fun when the character cares not only for themself, but also have somebody to come back to, somebody to protect, somebody to remember, somebody to die for with their lover's name on their lips.

    • @rustyshackle8000
      @rustyshackle8000 Před 4 lety

      Same here! I know a lot of people don't really do it because a lot of DMs don't see a romantic partner as a key figure in a character's development, but as a weakness to be exploited. It's honestly a dick move because it encourages being a murder hobo, which works for some games, but for story driven campaigns, it makes things way less interesting. That's why I love DMs who understand that when someone becomes romantically involved, that does not make them an instant target. Let the relationship build, let it grow. And hey, why wouldn't the villain exploit what they see as a weakness? You don't even have to kill them. Just kidnap them. Force the PCs hand, make them desperate. See what they'd be willing to do to save the person they love. To me, that's great storytelling.

    I ran a campaign once where the group had to deal with a death titan (a gargantuan undead beholder that was roaming the nation). It was using it's main eye beam to consume the life force from the land and the people that lived there (like the crystalline entity from STNG). It consumed the city and people where one of my players had a family. His kids escaped but his wife didn't. To beat the Titan, the party entered his maw and were swallowed into the demi-plane of death. There, they found the information they needed to best the Titan by talking to an Avatar of Death. In exchange for the info, one of them had to make a pact with the Avatar to surrender their life. Agreement made, the party began to leave until the player saw the spirit of his wife. He ran to her and they talked about their life together and before she faded, she handed him a rose as a symbol of their love. He took it with him as the party was teleported back to the living world.
    Once back, the party used the information, concocted a plan and used it to destroy the Titan. In the wake of all the destruction, the land was slowly healed with the help of a silver dragon druid NPC and her daughter.
    After that, I narrated the post campaign history of each character based on how they lived and what they acquired. The player who got the rose (a symbol of his wife's love and the pact he made) lived a long and fruitful life, yet missed his beloved. The rose came back with him from the demi-plane and never faded and shone with an inner light. When the player was ready, he attached the rose to his cloak, near his heart and boarded a ship. I described, as he sailed alone: Your life and everything you have accomplished lies behind you. As you sail into the unknown, the Avatar you made the pact with appears at your side and asks: "Are you ready to fulfill your agreement?". The player responds; "Yes". As he does so, the Avatar nods and on the player's other side, someone takes his hand. I tell them that you turn and see your beloved wife and she smiles at you and says: "I am proud of you and the kids. Let's go home". At that, they embrace as the world around them fades in golden light.

      All well written characters have a reason to be admired. For some reason though, a good chunk of human fascination tends to lead toward anything relating to death and a well written generally neutral necromancer is hard to compete against. I loved this character though and the theme of the campaign... Sure wish I could play the game but alas... My life is utter chaos with scheduling.

      Giggle Fart totally agree. And yeah you have a point on the fascination with death part. There are two things I tend to love most in fantasy, and that's dragons and necromancy. lol

      @Things_I_wish_I_knew Před 4 lety +2

      @@dorianrobinette9712 same could be said for I think 80% of the fanbase I also tend to gravitate towards creature/abnormality lore (observers, illithid, abaloths, etc... Anything that isn't naturally occurring but still considered in the monster/creature category.) I've even theory crafted a few pluasible instances where such could be actual player characters with alignment different from "the norm" but again. That's about the end of it as I cannot seem to ever stabalize my schedule beyond a couple of weeks of consistency

    • @dorianrobinette9712
      @dorianrobinette9712 Před 4 lety +1

      Giggle Fart I do love to hear more. I once had an idea for an ilithid character But there wasn't much to it. Basically an illithid that would constantly wear a mask to hide what he is from society. Possibly chopping off his face tentacles or wrapping them up to conceal them under said mask. Nothing to developed.

    • @Things_I_wish_I_knew
      @Things_I_wish_I_knew Před 4 lety +1

      @@dorianrobinette9712 from what I gather there is a type of illithid that doesn't go through any sort of physical transformation save that of their digestive system beyond that they still look like the species host. There is also something known as "the adversary" where the larva takes on certain traits/habits of it's host... Should this be found out the illithid in question is eliminated with extreme prejudice for fear they will become the ultimate enemy to all illithid.
      I've thought about toying with either of these ideas or taking my original idea of a fully developed illithid who is the sole survivor of his collective after a bunch of adventurers wipe out his collective. Now no longer influenced by an elder brain and forced to adapt this illithid goes through a sort of "Frankenstein's monster" type of life, where they learn and begin to see the other races as something far more than a food source. Like you they do what they can to mask their appearance (either through illusion magic, or some kind of psychic projection.) As they know they are feared for what they are.
      Due to the need for brains to survive this illithid is rather torn... Wanting to be seen as something more than a monster to be feared and desiring to be accepted they try to find a way to either feed the need by only eliminating that which would cause harm to others or finding another way to sustain themselves... That's the jist of it anyways. Alignment would be somewhere around true neutral to neutral evil. It's possible for them to be neutral good should they find another solution for their food source but they'd always be struggling to reconcile how they sustain themselves and survive with their desires not to cause harm to others.

    There's a reason people from all walks of life are drawn to this hobby of ours. It's not the glory(no awards exist for what we do), the prestige(despite how mainstream we are now, we're still made fun of), or even the pay(we spend more on books& product than some do on their cars). No, we involve ourselves in this, our beloved hobby, out of a sense of Community and Friendship. I did kinda like a pseudo D&D session with my brother when on my birthday last year. I got my first D&D dices for like six people. I really wanted to test them out so my brother said 'Try dming, we'll make things up letting the dices decide.' So I was like cool!
    So I set the scene and this is my first time trying this, I told my brother that he woke up at dusk in the woods, he has been mug by someone. 'Do I see any tracks of who mug me?' He asked and rolled a good number to see fainted footprints in the mud.
    He followed them to an old fortress that's been abandon for years and is falling apart. 'Are there any signs of life?' He asked and rolls a nat 20. 'It's hard to miss the large basins with fire around the place and one bugbear dozing by the door.' I said.
    After rolling to look for anything that can be used as a weapon only to fail and trying to steal a rusty sword off the sleeping Bugbear's belt to stab him with it, my brother goes inside to find a stony hallway to greet him. He walks around and finds another Bugbear playing cards alone. 'I'm going to sneak up behind him.' He said and rolled a low number making the Bugbear aware of his presence but hasn't seen him fully.
    My brother then said. 'I'm going to act like his friend' And pretend to be the sleeping guard he killed, he rolled higher number than the Bugbear making him believed that he talking to 'Jeff' but when he goes back to the game my brother went to kill him from behind but the bugbear made a loud roar when he got stab that alert the others in the fortress, my brother panics cause I said he got about three chances to do something before they find him.
    'What's in this room?' He asked and I said. 'There are three ways out of this room the way he came in, a slightly open door to the right, and hallway to left but sounds like that where the others coming from.'
    'Is there anything on the ceiling or walls?' He asked next. 'There a large crack on the stone wall that seems to lead to another room.' I said.
    'I'm going to break through the wall.' He said quickly and rolls a low number. 'Ow! My wrist!' He said and rolls again getting a nat 1, he looks at me and I said. 'Well you managed to break through the wall that time but you fell into the Bugbear Boss's lap, waking him up, and he not so happy to see you there.'
    My brother said he'll try to stab him but rolls low to grab by the throat and gets choke to death by the boss.
    That was the first time we played something like D&D with my first set of dices and it was fun.

    Totally unrelated story: how the first time player found out that paladins were op: so this is my first time playing. I am playing with I think a ranger, a fighter, and maybe a wizard? So we are playing the stranger things module. We go into this cave filled with troglodytes after we got some cool magic items. Real quick, keep in mind I don't remember everything, and I only played for one session because I had to move. First combat comes up. I get first initiative and using divine smite I literally slash a troglodyte in half, and my dm (not his real name) Dave really impresses me with how graphic he did the description. It was amazing and was my first taste of true power. Later (not too positive, curse you poor memory!) I went and had to fight I think a hellhound, and me and the ranger both demolished that thing. I will say, I will never take divine smite for granted ever again. if anybody who played ever sees me again, thank you. This was my first and best dnd expirience and will remain that forever thanks to you. Sorry I can't remember what the heck all your classes were. If you guys want to do more dnd online sometime, then I'm always open.

    Watching all these cool videos really brings back the desire to find a DM who did more than just point a to point b adventures. Always felt like I was playing that old arcade game Crossbow. Those were bad enough but add a couple of DM's who only ran games for the power trip and it was even less fun. One only wanted to tear us down while another inserted himself with cameo appearances made to show off how superior he felt he was over everyone else. Burned both those bridges very nastily when enough was enough and haven't played since. Would love to find someone who would take a old and severely rusty hand at the game and let them see what RP muscles they could flex.

    The Pentra sound a lot like the Judi in the campaign I am in right now, Though they do not out right hate magic from my understanding the heavily enforce the use and networks to get any sort of magic and magical items. If you are a Magically incline race they don't prosecute you they just tell you to have a permit for your spells and items, which is good since 90% of the party are known magically connected races.
    High Elves, Drow, I think one of us was a Wood Elf and then me the extreme oddball out a Hill Dwarf. The rest of the team are humans with Eleven blood to some degree, me being a Dwarf isn't a taboo like you would expect in fact I am the only one with no blood ties to the familia group but all of them treat me like I was, it helps my druid was a entertainer in a circus troupe along with one of the familia and a very trusted friend through those times I suppose but heh there is never a bit of bigotry towards Dwarfs by Elves even in their capital, humans not so much (In that capital that is, all is fair outside the walls of the capital and their leaders are jovial so it has not been a problem.) but still the way things are in this world is something we could all listen to more.

    This is a kind of Dumb Question: I created a character sheet for my first DnD when my time comes. I watched enough live games to understand the rules mostly. I came up with an awesome backstory that would let any DM create a starting quest out of it, but I have a question I need answering: In this character backstory, she (a Half-elf) had a blood fusion with a dragon. How would it affect her stats and alignment (should be mentioned that the dragon whose blood she receives is technically neutral, because its the guardian of a valley). I'll even let you know her whole backstory once my questioned been answered
