    I got the sonic pad a few months ago and had a few issues with the earlier firmware, now its much better, but you have to be aware of the vibration sensor that came with the earlier batches that has wiring issues. Just so you know: The recent update of Creality's firmware crashed my Sonic Pad. I was down for a couple of WEEKS waiting for a special usb cable to fix the problem, and then I was involved in the total wiping of my Sonic Pad's firmware so I could reinstall the latest version of that firmware on my Sonic Pad. This involved 7Up to unzip ten files, and Phoenix Suit (no, NOT SUITE!), which is a POS program. You seem like an intelligent person, so I'm sure you could handle a full-on crash. But when it's Creality's Download, and they refused to take responsibility for putting out a crappy update, well . . . we all have feelings, and frankly, I'll never forget how the big C made my life SUCK for three, almost four weeks!

    During setup, you can see you selected the Ender 5 S1 option without Z axis limit switch. There are 2 versions of this printer, an earlier version with Z axis limit switch and 3D printed part cooling shroud, and a newer version without Z axis limit switch and an injection molded part cooling shroud, both listed in the sonic pad machine selection options. The new version has a different design for the part cooling shroud which is what the CR touch is mounted to, and it also has a different position. At 4:01, it looks like you had the right one selected for your model, (without z axis limit switch), but in the next shot, you are setting up the version with the yellow tag in the top left corner that says no Z axis limit switch. I can see that your model has the 3D printed shroud, and at 4:01, can also see your z axis limit switch. Looks like you chose the wrong version during setup, which is why your bl touch offsets were wrong. I have the version with the Z axis limit switch as well, and checked sonic pad my .cfg, and the offsets are 0,45, I never changed them. I have seen this be a big confusion point in the E5S1/sonic pad community, maybe Creality needs to do a better job clarifying, maybe adding a warning during setup to double check.

    i have an s5 pro that i hadnt used for a long time. left it on, and tucked a new bed surface underneath it to keep on deck since i had some leveling issues when i first got it. its been sitting for a long time. the blocking of the air intake killed my board. i bought a new board now a couple years? ago? i dont know. havent used it. so a few weeks ago i decided to swap the board, discovered klipper. have a pi3b, installed that and kipper - no wifi....but appears my pi's wifi is toast. its been years since i used that too. and its hard to get module drivers running on mainsail
    but within a couple hours i went from nothing to fully working. the presets for Z rotations/distance were wrong but that took a few short prints (though they were unattended so the longer printing time i didnt see the fail in real time - should have been obvious quick)
    i am learning cad software, which is new. used 2d cad in the 90s but this is different.
    brute forced some useful parts without diving into how to use the software. this will improve.

      @@MandicReally I think the idea is the simplification of the process. Not to belittle what’s been done with raspberry pi or 3D printing in general but even I have, at times, struggled and for me (and to read online I’m not alone) it’s not fun and isn’t enjoyable. Not that some don’t enjoy that aspect but to grow market share and customer base things eventually are made easier so that more people can use any given product.
      And as you mentioned raspberry pi’s aren’t exactly easily available and they aren’t as cheap as they once were. A sonic pad preloaded with klipper is a veritable steal comparatively. Now if it were just as easy to use it with non creality machines I could see them flying off the shelf. If it were easy to use with anycubic and prusa I’d consider a purchase since it’s either get those running on klipper or get rid of them and buy faster printers.

  • @shawnhicks619
    @shawnhicks619 Před rokem

    I think your going to start seeing more printer manufacturers moving away from open source. As good as open source is for end users it’s bad for companies that are now scrambling to innovate and remain relevant in a rapidly changing world of 3D printing.
    First my thoughts on the sonic pad. It’s a bandaid to fix issues printers have suffered from for too long. More modern printers should come with klipper. They for too long have relied on inferior processors limiting them to marlin firmware. From what I can see klipper enabled printers far out perform marlin printers in almost every aspect. And if Bambu labs success has taught us anything it’s that people want good quality prints with faster print speed. I contend that had manufacturers embraced the fact that klipper delivers better overall performance Bambu might not have exploded the way it has.
    Now some thoughts on klipper, it’s not “easy” at least for just anyone to do it. The sonic pad helps with that issue with creality printers but to use it on other machines means having to do more steps. If it’s not adapted to make it easier more people will move over to machines like Bambu produces and either the old slow printers sit on a shelf and collect dust, live in a land fill or are sold for next to nothing second hand to someone who has the ability to use klipper or someone who doesn’t know any better. I think klipper certainly will give older machines new life, or at least help keep them more relevant short term. But I think any out of the box fdm printer for sure produced a year ago is on borrowed time as the game has certainly changed.

    ive got a problem with some of those rip offs... the sonic pad , prusa, and bambu are using open source in a way of locked down style. so you kinda get a open source product for a big money but locked open sourced software. im not long in this 3printing stuff very long (2years). sorry. but this turns me over against 3d printing because these rip offs... i am using a used creality 5 pro with a pi3b and klipper , and i love it (besides of the installation)!!!! get your tung stiched and dont let you be a trojan horse for the big companies :) like your vids otherwise

    • @MandicReally
      @MandicReally  Před rokem +1

      Plenty of companies are doing bad with Open Source and I too hate it. Problem is not everyone does, and my job is my job. I could choose to never cover these products, but then I don’t really have the chance to call out the issues or help the folks who aren’t going to care.
      The only confirmed open source that Bambu is using is their Slicer. There is no proof beyond that with them. Prusa open sources most things but seems to be headed toward changing that. I’m a bit bothered they haven’t released the Mk4 stuff yet despite it being for sale. The list of companies doing it “right” is pretty short and from varying perspectives even then it’s questionable.
      Idk, I’m extremely heavily leaning toward no longer reviewing products. There is too much of a minefield with this stuff these days. I just want to build printers and maker stuff, without the headaches and politics of it.

    I bought the Sonic Pad, used it for awhile, and then promptly sent it back. At present, I am using an old SFF desktop PC running Ubuntu, with KIAUH as the method to install Klipper and requirements......and I'm using this single PC connected to four different printers. Once you have a decent understanding of how the Klipper components work together, you're better off rolling your own solution so you can have full control of all settings and data, and then you aren't supporting Creality when they're blatantly violating licensing. There are a number of profiles already available out of box when you setup Klipper (not just Creality), and if there isn't one, I'm pretty sure the community has one if you ask. Personally, I am done with Creality. They are an awful company, with awful practices, and exceedingly awful support. but your collection. i gave away all my money years ago, which, in hindsight, is pretty stupid, but you have the wherewithal to have a bunch of rad shit...but you write it off.
      my now largely deceased j fam would have been proud. "oh avi, you are doing cute accountant tricks"(i dont even speak hebrew or yiddish).
      uhh. so what i am i think getting at, is that we need, here, not just videos about how to tune your accelerometers or the best slicer settings (which i need because i am an rword) but also the useful tools my jew family would be proud of to write everything off. though this is not true for me. i literally give my money away and do not write off what i can, nothing at all. should i? yes. do i have any inclination to? not really. i will be so poor by the time i give it all away that nothing else matters, not to quote metallica too much ;) its weird.

    its trash without root access, and dont rely on creality support

      You can get root access since an update came some weeks ago. But it might not bring much since Creality made some weird decisions and uses proprietary software and modified versions of the open source software.

    Hi Alan, great video as always. I just got mine a few days ago. For someone that has no idea how to install klipper it's great. One question, are you able to print from the USB port on the Sonic Pad? I have tried so many times and it won't read the thumb drive. I tried every port on the Pad and nothing. Just wondering if I am doing something wrong. Thanks again for all your videos they help a lot.

      To my knowledge the only way to achieve that is to redirect Fluidd to look to the USB drive as the G-code location. That would replace the internal storage as the file location. I’ve never tried it personally and I cannot say for certain that the Sonic Pad’s implementation of Klipper can achieve it.
      Network transfer is first and foremost the intended use with Klipper. It’s part of what I sometimes prefer about marlin personally.

      @@MandicReally OK then that answers my question and why I can't get it to work. There is no way someone that knows nothing about this stuff and new to 3D printing can do that. Thanks a lot and you have a great weekend and holiday.

      The thumb drive goes in the top back usb drive. Not on the two usb ports on the left. You connect your printer via the middle usb port on the pad to the usb port on your printer.
