Amazing tour through the evolution of climbing gear. Main take away is ice climbers in the 70s were nuts.

Yes maybe, but in the minds of many 70's and early 80's climbers, who had 12 points, terras or even banana's it was the climbers from the 60's making step cutting ascents of zero or the point that were nuts. That made it feel quite rational.

Absolutely brilliant. ❤ Love Grivel stuff. I have a G2 axe and Monte Rosa crampons for walking in Scotland. Stevie Haston is Gold, proper old school. Enjoyed Ezio too. A nice wee you tube treat on a bleak January night.

A nice walk from the past to today, thank you Stevie, Ezio, and Grivel. So much was shit about earlier tools, double boots, heavy clothes, and the garage-shop-like evolution of screws/poundins/hooks. But wow, the places you could go - ice climbing was like nothing else, and it was always worth it.

The ergonomic advantage of the angled ice axes is instantly clear when you look at the shape of a Kukri knife/machete for comparison, which has the same angling and is a very effective chopping tool, basically the same motion. Very clever to adopt this kind of shape!

The pro was so bad it was not worth putting , even with better pro it took too long to put in and it was still so bad so we didn’t put it in you had to commit- that will stay with me forever happy climbing

I remember following a trail of blood on many occasions, or leaving one behind as you'd smashed you knuckles up so badly. All good fun!
