    Thank you for this detailed tutorial. I have a dual 721 and the toner arm height is also adjustable. What would be the proper way to adjust correctly the height?

      You would need an azimuth for that.

      The goal of VTA is to enable a level angle of attack of the tone arm for improved tracking. Once the cart is aligned, level the tone arm with the stylus down in playing position. Too high or too low will be obvious deviation from level.

    Is there not a little plastic protractor to align the cartridge in the headshell sled?
    I have a 1229q it seems to be a step taken when replacing a cartridge on that model.

    I would seriously not use WD40. WD40 will dry to a gummy residue that can act as an insulator. What you really want os a contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Other than that, the rest of the advice is pretty good.
    Thanks for a great video. I have a Dual 1015, which is a bit different, but uses the same alignment and similar headshell design.

    I have a 1219 with what I think is a problem with anti-skate. The stylus sticks in a groove on what I believe is a clean, unscratched disc. It happens on multiple discs, intermittently. TT was refurbished a few years ago, but I really do not know what or where lubrication was applied. I cleaned a relatively new Shure cart/stylus with no joy. When changing the anti-skate from zero to five on the black scale, there is no movement of the arm as I use quening lever to lift the arm of the disc. If it is set to five on red scale, I get a very slight movement of the arm to the outside of the disc as the arm rises. That would seem to be opposite direction of the force I need to allow the stylus to track without error along the groove. I am about to open the TT and apply 3 in 1 Oil to gimbles; I have aligned the cart with a protractor and set the VTF to 2.0 grams with a scale. I wonder if you could suggest anything else to check or replace while I have it apart?

    Thank you. There is something important that you have forgotten to clarify. In the original cartridge holder that you showed first, it is not necessary to align because it is already designed so that you do not have to do it , so you have to align it when using another that is not the original and to mount another cartridge that is not original it is necessary to change the cartridge holder too which is what you did and for that reason you had to put the adapter to achieve the sufficient height. You forgot to clarify it because without that explanation it is not understood why you did the entire alignment.

    How do you adjust the set down to get it to start at the beginning of the record, also the cartridge is slanted and the right hand side touches the record so how can I fix this. Do these decks need an earth wire from the mains? I have the 1218 model nad it only has 2 wires and a 2 pin German plug and am in the UK, do you sell 78 cartridges?

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 2 lety

      There is a screw underneath the speed change lever. A slight turn of that adjusts the point where the arm sets down.
      Another reason for this might be a broken steuerpimpel. I have a video that describes replacing that as well.

    Greetings, does Dual 604 (TK 230) also potentially need spacers for the the new cartridge or is it only needed for TK-14/TK-24 like on the video?

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi there. Spacers are needed if het height of the cartridge you are putting on there is lower than the original. You can check this with a cartridge alignment gauge or an azimuth ruler.

      @@ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs I was so happy with the table that I found and bought a Dual 1209 for parts including is staking spindle for 125$.motor was supposedly making noise. After cleaning and greasing all parts , it is almost working except the Idler at 33 rpm wont touch the pulley. Platter needs a kick start do you have any idea why ?

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 3 lety

      @@richardgrenier4639 I think the motor bearings will need cleaning and oiling, as well as the main spindle bearing. I plan on making a video on that in a month or two. Another reason could be that the inside of the platter or the idler wheel are dirty/have gone hard. a light scrub might solve it.
      You can check this by feeling if the idler wheel is stil rubbery and if there is any residue on the inside of the platter, where the idler wheel hits.

    Where is the white backing piece that was in the cartridge holder when you dismounted the cartridge holder

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 3 lety

      That backing plate only occurs in a very specific headshell, from the Dual 1229. This is a plate that allows the user to adjust the angle of the cartridge if the multi-play function is used to compensate for the height of multiple records stacked on top of each other.

    You have to remove the platter mat when you adjust tracking force...Those scales account for the thickness of most mats. Leaving the mat on will have an effect on the measurement....

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 2 lety

      True, although the effect is not striking. Typically these Dual turntables have their mats glued to the platter from the factory.

    704 has vta and vtf. All dual TTs with contact plate: gently pull the contact plate down and out. Polish both sides with metal polish. Tarnish will melt away with no effort. Both sides will be black with oxide tarnish. Clean with ipa and then f5 deoxit. The rca leads should be replaced and contacts under the table polished as well. Run 2000 grit sand paper up and down through the mute switch contact 6 or 7 times to ensure contact. Dual tables generally want .25 grams less anti skate vs tracking force.

  • @bucurion4882
    @bucurion4882 Před 2 lety

    The cartridge is AT3600 with tracking 2-3 grams, 2,5 grams recommended tracking force! The tracking force is a great mistake ...1 ,25g

    • @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs
      @ArtOfVinylTurntableRepairs  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, you’re right. It’s the wrong tracking force. As I state in the video you should always look it up for your specific cartridge.
