I just wanted to thank you for the great, and very informative videos! I am just getting back into vinyl and didn't really know where to start! I was raised on records when I was about 11 in 1985 as my father was a big music fan and lived records!! Unfortunately one of the reasons I am now interested in records again is that we lost my father to cancer a few months back and my mother just gave me all of my dads records! I absolutely love music and was saddened yet excited to see all of these records again! Having these videos as a guide really helped! I just purchased the AT-LP12O and the Sonos connect so I can hook it up to the rest of my Sonos system (Play 3's, soundbar and sub). I am really looking forward to hearing all of my dads old records and starting a collection of my own! Again, thank you so so much for the videos! Can't wait to continue to learn and enjoy

Idk why but your voice is so soothing
Helpful tip: Remove the stylus from the the cartridge when you mount the cartridge. This will prevent any damage to you stylus while mounting the cartridge. Or if your cart comes with a cover for the stylus have that in place for installation.
+Karl Langer Exactly, I noticed I forgot to mention that during this video. Very important to not damage the stylus when adjusting everything!
If you have a cart that doesn't have a removable stylus, like some MC carts, leave the protective cover on at minimum. As mentioned, you don't want to damage the stylus/needle. It is a precision part and even the slightest bend, that may not even be visible to the eye, will create headaches with sound reproduction.
My table still works from 1976 over 400 albums. Some not opened. Love my vinyl. Still have my 8 tracks and cassettes.

Do you get it? If so is the speed/Rpm consistent, or does it change speeds for no reason
Some carts do not have colour coding, so you need to have a look for an R and L marking, and a + for the signal and - for the ground.
I have several AT95E carts that are only labelled R and L In this case, the Right coil is on one side, the Left coil on the other. If + and - is not labeled, just make sure your grounds go to the same side so the channels are in phase. It can be handy to use Google to check the "pin out" for your cartridge if it is not colour coded. Btw, loving this series. It's broken down nicely so anyone can understand it. It's one of the best basic tutorials for a turntable setup on CZcams.

good job!!! regardless of how many vinyl cartridge videos are out there, it is great for the younger (and older) audience to see these videos and realize the greatness of Vinyl and how it is superior in sound. I stumbled on your channel by accident - and very glad that I did. My Audio Technica AT110E was starting to show signs of ageing. Sound was getting a bit 'wooly' and treble was lacklustre. Looking at the stylus under a powerful lens revealed the build-up of debris. Dabbing with a bit of propanol (Iso-propyl alcohol) using a stylus brush - brushing lengthwise of course - got it removed. Back on the turntable and clarity is no restored. I was worried that I might have to replace my AT110E - and they are no longer in production. I have however purchased a spare stylus. One thing i noticed about the AT110E however and that is the stylus shield. It is very easy to shift orientation of the stylus assembly in the cartridge when putting the stylus guard down.

All very well on removable headshells. Pro-ject and Rega (and many others) turntables have fixed headshells. Fitting a cartridge to them is a faff.
Another great informative video. The positioning of the cartridge on the head shell has always been difficult for me to adjust correctly

When I line up the cartridge to the protractor, do I leave the protractor exactly as it is without moving it or can I move the protractor to see if it hits the second spot with the cartridge?
I have a zineth record player from I think the 60's that I got about a week ago. I've gotten the platter spinning quite well on all 4 speeds and I've replaced the paper compactors in the amplifier so I get a good hum from the speaker when I tap on the solder lines coming from the arm, so now it's time to replace the needle and cartridge except they don't fit your standard Description at all. For starters the cartridge is entirely black with 2 solder pegs on the back. These pegs have 2 wires soldered to them: white on top; red on bottom. They run directly to the power/volume knob. The needle is basically a long brass stick. It's not connected to a red box thing but is rather directly screwed into the cartridge. All I know is that the whole module is part EV69 but I'm not even sure of that. If you know any reliable place for me to get a replacement or any other general vintage record player tips please do tell.
One of the most clever designs has to be the Audio-Technica AT-VM95 series, which allows you to remove the stylus even when it’s covered with the protector. The stylus stays covered, and there’s no chance of accidentally touching the cantilever or magnets! Peace.

Hey vinyl eyezz you forgot the one of the most important thing to set up the cartridge part is the ALIGNMENT so which you will get a perfect sound of your the vinyl
Yes, this was not an accident. Alignment will be a separate video. That's why I said we'll be adjusting it later.
I just got myself an LP120 turntable, I think I have it set up right with the balance, tracking force and such, and aligned it as best possible for my eyes with the protractor, for most part seems to sound phenomenal, I just was curious tho some things like I was playing some older records which I cleaned first as they were pretty filthy, I notice strong parts treble occasionally comes through as a little distorted on those, Have I set something up wrong or is it more likely my speakers or just the old records?
Well I bought a record player from early 2000s so the headshell is different and I have no idea how to put the needle. Any tips?

I have a thorens td 125 mk2. It doesn't have a headshell or cartridge. What do you recommend me to use as a headshell and cartridge? I have no idea what to look for since it is my first turntable. I also have an akai aa-1050 as a receiver.

I was going to replace my audio technica headshell with the ortofon headshell and noticed the wires/leads are opposite color coded. Meaning the red and green are flipped compared to the audio technica. I know the ortofon headshell comes with the leads attached. Will I have to do any wire adjusting or does it just work out through the tonearm connection? Thanks👍🏼

I have a Technics SL-B101 turntable. It has an old Ortofon FF 10 XE cartridge/stylus on it. I want to replace it, but would like to know if I can put a whole new cartridge and stylus on it? I can’t find the Ortofon model number. They say it’s no longer made. I’m ok with that. I just need to know if I can mount any cartridge on the head shell and I’m good to go? I hope that makes sense?
But there are different kinds of cartridges. Most common was the MM (moving magnet cartridge). This was the cheapest and the one with the highest signal output. The stylus was coupled to a magnet and vibrated inside a fixed coil. But then i remember that all the high end cartridges back in the day was the MC cartridges (moving coil) where the stylus was coupled to the coil and the magnet was fixed inside the cartridge. It resulted in a much lower ouput, down to a tenth of the MM. And you had to use all that fancy extras like a step up trafo just to kick up the output before it was sent to the amplifier. These things was rather expensive due to production cost, who doesn't remember the Kiseki Lapis Lazuli which was an amazing work of art and had a fascinating price tag. Today if yo can find one, it's like 20K$?!?! But the question i always wondered about is: Why is MC's so much better than MM's??
No you can't move to the 4:30. I have a Technics SLQ3 and I bought it used with the original cartridge and it was set as the original cartridge was supposed to be. It sounded scratchy at the end of the record. I bought a cartridge alignment tool and set it according to the settings as low as they would go and the scratchiness went away all through the record.

Hi, I have a Technics SL QD 22 with a Technics p30 cartridge I found on the internet that it is an p-type cartridge don't know what that is? and that the tracking force isnt that important with those kind of cartridges the counterweight should be at 1.25 grammes is that true? The anti skating is factory set I think. And how can I check if the stylus is okay? If it sounds good when I play records it's good?

I recently received a Victrola portable (suitcase) turn table. I’ve been enjoying listening to some Vinyl I picked up, but I have heard that this cheap player would ruin my records. Is this true? Will it actually destroy my records? Or will it just play it a lower quality?

Hi I’m wondering how important is the “quality” ie price of the headshell. If I can get a headshell for $10 is it noticeably worse than one for 40? Does it effect sound at all?
The quality of the cartridge and stylus is very important, but not always dependent on the price. An example is the Audio Technica AT3600L cartridge, which is not expensive but has a great sound

If you do spring for the LP120 you won't regret it! It's the best table out there for the price, so many upgradable options and quality sound and built like a tank!

Hey Jared! Can Buying a new Head shell improve the sound quality of the record by any chance. The left ground wire broke on mine old one and i ordered a new Audio Technica Head shell on Amazon. Do u think it is worth it?
+King Quan Productions yes, even the headshell can have an impact on the sound. It can definitely improve it a little bit. But the quality of the stylus/needle will have the biggest impact on the sound quality.

2:25 - Your fingers are dangerously close to the delicate stylus/cantilever assembly. If the cartridge came with a needle guard, put it on BEFORE handling the cartridge. Otherwise, remove the stylus from the cartridge and put it aside.
NOTE: High-end, expensive cartridges DO NOT have removable styli, so be EXTRA CAREFUL when handling them!
+Greg Leuszler Absolutely right! I was cringing as I watched the cart being handled with the stylus exposed. Especially for newbies, remove the stylus platform before installing the cartridge!! This should have been pointed out.
Hi love yr vids, was wondering if u could help? I've got a ATlp60 and love it! but when I play a track that fades, for a couple of seconds before it fades totally the signal disappears, I can't hear the needle on the record at all, then it comes back for a second then goes again, it's like music as it fades isn't loud enough for the stylus??! Could this be because I'm using a non phono speaker thru the aux socket? I thought it was OK to do that with the ATlp60? It's very annoying as in every other way I'm happy with the turntable.
Oh, I'm not what the problem could be. It definitely has something to do with the built in Preamp though!

This video neglects the other types of turntables with the "headshell" integrated into the tonearm, in which the wires connect from the tonearm to the cartridge.
I need some advice how good are the crosley turntables
Hi Tabatha! Unfortunately the Crosley turntables (like the cruiser) are not good. The needle presses down too hard on the records and ruins the grooves. Their sound is also bad because they cut corners with plastic parts and bad materials. I would highly recommend you consider the Audio Technica LP60 instead, they come in lots of great colors, have quality parts, and are under 100 dollars! Good luck!

Are you sure the tonearm is balanced and the tracking force is correct? It might be too light causing it to skip.
