I have a Dual 1237 that my dad bought new in 1977. That's interesting about the motor speed issue. Mine never exhibited that problem, but I never used the changer function on it.
I had several different Dual turntables over the years and every one of them had some kind of problem-glitch except for the 721 I had which was solid as a rock except for a flickering strobe light... I had one and I forget what model number it was but every now and then when you started it it would run backwards... lol
I once had a Wega 3430 that was a rebadged Dual 1229 (basically a Dual 1229 mechanism in a case that fit the Wega Studio line of HiFi gear). Never had a single problem with it, but then I have no idea if it has the 60Hz bug since we had 50Hz in Germany... Most fun I had with that one was actually Fehlfarben's "Monarchie und Alltag", where the last song (Paul ist tot) ended in a permanent click track, and even if there is a auto-return mechanism in the 1229, it stayed on that click-track because they made the inside stop-track just wide enough so the auto-return mechanism didn't trigger. Oh, and the 78rpm Schellack records my mother bought as a student visiting the IFA in Berlin in the 50s.
I recently saw one of these at a yard sale…. but I ultimately didn’t get it because of the price tag ($50), as well as the variety of problems that this particular model is known for (especially the notorious SM 840 motor).
@@12voltvids Just in general Dave. I never messed with turntables growing up. We had 8 track/ reel to reel (Pioneer 707 and the 909)and Pioneer receivers/amps and Kenwood gear. And CB radios of course 😁 Hopefully you get a Tascam or Fostex multitrack unit one day to repair. Those things were cool....and I would love to see you refurbish one. Especially the Tascam 244. Those were built pretty solid IMO.
These old Dual belt drives are nice when they work, but yeah. I've done work like that on a Dual, having to tear it down and clean out all of the old gummed up grease in addition to replacing the drive belt and the steuerpimpel.
I have two of those 8mm film scanners... different brand but the same deal. Same experiance, done hundreds of films for folks and never had a complaint about the quality.
It ain't no Lasergraphics scanner, but then it didn't cost 6 figures plus about 6000 for each gate type. 8mm, super 8, 9mm 16mm 24mm 35mm 65mm each requires a separate gate. One of clients that I do a fair number of video and audio repairs for has one. needless. He has the cheap 5K scanner (2.5 for 8mm film) and he charges 5x per foot than I do. He does mostly government and TV station archiving. I have done about 1600 reels on mine and nobody complains about the quality, and I get plenty of referrals. Someone shows a film I did for them and they want theirs done too. Yet I get people almost daily tell me what a piece of shit it is. Well I laugh because my machine paid for itself the first order I got and I get 1000.00 plus orders in all the time.
I rehab a lot of these old Duals-seems like a lot of people's parents pass them down. That particular model is worse than most, but yes always something going wrong with the auto-mechanisms. But I have found quite often the player has either seemingly never been serviced, or it's been serviced by an owner who made their best attempt- and usually forgot to leave any grease in the tube lol.
I have tried heat shrink tubing didn't work I've tried the center for RG6 coax didn't work I've tried a piece of lamp cord didn't work in fact I tried two of those on this that didn't work but the vinyl window screen spline worked. It's the first time I tried it got the tip off vinyl engine. It worked first time well second time because the arm was loose. Maybe the others would have worked as well had I noticed that that screw was loose but I didn't notice it when I tried them. But the spline works and it's readily available. Your local home Depot type store might even give you a sample if you walk in there and ask them for a piece which is what they did for me they repair window screens at the store I went to so the guy had a big spool of it which they sell by the meter I said I only need two inches and he cut a piece off and said here give it a try. Now I know what I can use when I run into one of these again which I will. I used .18 inch. It fits perfectly over the pin.
No. That would defeat the purpose. The steuerpimple is what drives the tone arm back and forth. Friction with the control arm is what makes that possible.
I have a Dual 510 turntable that I bought new in 1976. It developed a "slight" issue a very long time ago where when you start the platter moving it turns too fast. The strobe is really moving and the motor actually makes a slight, very quite whining sound. For the past 30 years, stopping the platter and starting it again a couple of times will get the motor to run at a normal speed, so this didn't bother me. However, just recently, the problem has gotten worse and now it takes several tries to get the motor to come on at the right speed. I don't think this is a mechanical problem; it may be a running capacitor that is going bad IF these motors use one of those. Anyhow, please let me know if you have any idea what could be causing this problem. Thank you.
It's the same effing motor. The 840 was an eff up at the factory. Look at it if it's an 840 which it will be find an 860 and sell the 840 to someone in a 50hz country. I probably changed about 300 of them over the years. They is a kit that will limit the start up power till the motor gets running that will correct this and it works, untill the circuit fails that is.

Hello again! I made an accidental discovery: I put a new belt on my Dual 510 turntable (the old one was 48 years old) and now the motor spins up at the correct speed every time, so maybe the loose, stretched belt was a good part of the reason why the SM840 motor was having a problem coming on at the right speed every time. The $12.00 belt I bought off of a guy on eBay was a heck of a lot cheaper than a new motor. @@12voltvids
I may have accidentally found a cheap answer to why the SM840 motor comes up at the wrong speed occasionally. I decided to replace the belt on my turntable and now the motor comes up at the right speed every time! So it may be that the 49 year old belt was too stretched out to present a strong enough load on the motor, so the motor couldn't sync up with the 60 Hz very well. I much prefer a totally manual turntable. As long as it's a hifi turntable that I can put any cartridge I want and adjust the counterweight and anti-skate and it runs the right speed, I'm happy. I remember in 1984 disabling the automatic parts of a turntable I had since the return mechanism would kick in too early (before the end of the record) or not at all. Even worse, you could hear the sound of the return mechanism in the recording if it kicked in right at the beginning of the tail-out groove. I used a one inch piece of clear tape in the right place and presto - manual turntable. That piece of tape is still there 31 years later and the unit still works.
I have a Technics slm1 and a theorens td165. The technics uses the tp4 p mount cartridge which in my opinion was probably one of the best inventions for the vinyl era because it insured 100% accuracy from the get-go. No overhang adjustments no protractors needed to set up. Just plug in and everything was perfect. Every cartridge was made to the design specification. Want to swap cartridges. Just unplug and pop in a different one. Easier then rolling tubes. It has an auto lift at record end that was flawless. It would count the pulses from the lead out and when it detects that the lead out has happened it lifted the arm and stopped the platter but didn't return as it was a manual. It just lifted the arm. The thorens just runs on the lead out locked groove.
I'm on my late wife's channel, but I'm a tech here in St Louis, and the 1249 has a special place in my hall of horrors. That and their brother, the infamous Perpetuum Ebner, specifically the 45 adaptors, which have to be pound for pound, the most over-engineered, underbuilt piece of steaming owl offal ever found on the forest floor! I was bested by a 45 adaptor! That if you ever open one up... Do so in a box... So you can catch every little pin and micro-spring... I had my 1249 working... But I went back to do a little bit more work... But the more I worked on it the worse it became. It was so badly built and just so poorly executed... That the linkage for the changer mechanism just became looser and looser... And would never perform again. I had it working. But the act of open and up again, did it in. I think the problem with the change are on. These is that it is a new turn table, With the linkage from an older one hastily hung on the newer chassis, with just a few springs and rubber bushings making the tenuous connections. Sheesh!!! Never again. I will remove the changer on these... Never again will I attempt to fix it. That goes for PE as well. lol. Life is too short. These are two frustrating. There are no teachible moments to be found. Lol
If my memory serves me right lol... 'Dual' was found a lot in German produced record units etc.. Ex military bought units Germany... Some Garrard units (UK) were I think way way worse ! Many were sold with the American adaptor for single multi play...
They were imported into Canada and sold under the noresco name. I have a noresco / dual with 40 watt amplifier built in. My son uses it and it really rocks and sounds absolutely incredible. Amplifier was made in Canada. Uses Motorola transiators.

Japan's retaliation was putting all the domestic electronic manufacturers out of business by dumping their products over here cheaper than people in Japan could buy them for which naturally forced all the competition to go bankrupt that was Japan's way of winning WW2. Someone messed with this one and gave up. At least nothing was damaged in the process. If you have a new steuerpimpel its a 20 minute job to overhaul one of these old Duals.
Dual made a great rim drive turntable that had very low runble. I think the audiophiles woukd not accept it so they brought out belt drive. I found them to be extremely quiet, the only stacker without an arm and i loved the headshell. 50 years later, yes they need tons of work. I am only thinking in perspective of living with them back back then compared to bsr and Garrard.
@@markanderson350 Get a Russco Cue Master. I used one when I was in the TV studio. We used them to cue up music beds for intro extro on shows. Radio stations used these tables. Absolute work horse. Yes its an idler drive, and the motor is something like 1/4 hp. Huge. Gets the 10 lb playyer up to speed in less than 1/4 turn. Like 0 to 33 1/3 in .25 seconds.
How you can remember how they go back together is amazing I have the 1246 almost similar to this one I also read this that this is a multi player using a stacker spindle but I have the right stacker but does not work the manual explains some what but I do not understand what they mean by adjusting a bolt under spindle I do not want to take anything apart unlike you i do not want to have extra parts laying around JRo
I have a 1969 Dansette Conquest record player, that I bought in 1985. All I've ever had to replace on it was some needles (styli) (I prefer saying needles as well) and a couple of capacitors. People always make fun of the Dansettes, but they are very robust and long lasting. It's my favourite record player.
I serviced hundreds of the Dansette and other brands that were made in the same factory. They were cheap and cheerful and after some tlc continue to give years of pleasure.
Have to be careful on this cancel culture. I never say what I am thinking. A high profile cabinet member was just fired because she referred to a "crappy piece of land where nothing grows and has no natural resources." Some how that became a racist and hurtful remark that resulted in her being removed from her job as a government minister.
Doesn't surprise me. No money in repairs. In the average week I make a couple hundred on repairs if I'm lucky. I may make 400 a month. By comparison i make 5x that archiving video and film to DVD or USB.
A little unjusel trick when you need a little smaller belt to reel to reel players , cassette players ,,etc,,is to cut off the rubber from a Condom !! Yes you red right !! The rubber ring from the base off a Condom works perfekt in most case ,, the rubber in this ring last a long time !! Can be the solution in many ways 😂
I got a 505 for cheap but the pitch belt was broke I set it on speed I’m to cheap to buy a belt also the micro switch to turn on is gummed up and the rca patch cords are chewed not a big deal but I got a Yamaha at a garage sale for 10$ and it’s still in perfect working order yp 77 can’t bring myself to sell
@@12voltvids I had a 505C that I bought new back in the day. The cartridge mount is notorious for bad connections. And it could only take an Ortofon OM10 cartridge.

I restore 3 to 5 duals a week. Just did one in 1:39. Complete disassemble ultrasonic clean with wet sanded and polished lid. I see you are still using that horribly bad HS orchestra LP.

This is not a piece of crap. If cleaned, lubricated and replaced the dried up grease in the command wheel with the original grease (not just any grease!) and adjusted properly it will be fit for many years to come, it will probably outlive you. Oh, I would have removed the counter weight before lifting the unit from the console and placed the chassis on an appropriate piece of foam so the tone arm bearings are protected from being damaged as much as possible. Compare this oldie with any Rega, yes, hook them up to good measuring equipment and see what “this piece of crap” is capable of….and which one is better. I already can tell you, this Dual will humiliate any Rega.
These were a piece of crap when they left the factory. Starting at double speed half the time. Won't hurt the tone arm bearing. It's the same weight regardless of the orientation.
@@12voltvids Sure, as for the motor I agree. Dual should have done better research. As for the overall construction such as tone arm bearings, sturdiness of the turntable in general and capability of taking even the most demanding carts available, high compliance ones in particular, these turntables were outstanding quality. I have sold hundreds of them in our shop. They date from a time when stuff was repaired if something went wrong and they needed maintenance. Duals hated smokey environments more than other similar equipment. Most problems occurred over time with Duals that were used in such circumstances. Like many other equipment but precision mechanisms in particular.

I avoid any Dual that isn't the 1019. The 1019 is the perfect balance between modern enough to be hifi, and old enough to be solid. They are absolute junk to work on and full of unneccesary complications. And EVERYONE WANTS A DUAL. They don't even sound spectacular.
A lot of 1000 series have crappy pot metal platters which in my experience are beginning to warp. Combine that with an idler wheel and you have wow city.
Because i couldn't charge enough for. You can already buy the soft start for these motors. Problem is they fail left right and center. I can't remember how many of those units we condemned back in the 80s with that bad motor so many went in the junk. even when you could still buy the motor people did not want to spend the money to replace the motor with the proper one so they tossed them away. A few people didn't toss them they put them in the attic and now those ones are showing up on eBay for other suckers to buy

Curiously, my TT sometimes also jumps to double speed (only at 45 rpm). Made for 50 Hz, used at 50 Hz - some passing glitch in PLL divider logic.

Does the contact surface between the Steuerpimpel and the plastic arm need to be lubricated?
No. That would defeat the purpose. The steuerpimple is what drives the tone arm back and forth. Friction with the control arm is what makes that possible.

Dual made a great rim drive turntable that had very low runble. I think the audiophiles woukd not accept it so they brought out belt drive. I found them to be extremely quiet, the only stacker without an arm and i loved the headshell. 50 years later, yes they need tons of work. I am only thinking in perspective of living with them back back then compared to bsr and Garrard.

@@markanderson350 Get a Russco Cue Master. I used one when I was in the TV studio. We used them to cue up music beds for intro extro on shows.
Radio stations used these tables. Absolute work horse. Yes its an idler drive, and the motor is something like 1/4 hp. Huge. Gets the 10 lb playyer up to speed in less than 1/4 turn. Like 0 to 33 1/3 in .25 seconds.

How you can remember how they go back together is amazing I have the 1246 almost similar to this one I also read this that this is a multi player using a stacker spindle but I have the right stacker but does not work the manual explains some what but I do not understand what they mean by adjusting a bolt under spindle I do not want to take anything apart unlike you i do not want to have extra parts laying around JRo

I have a 1969 Dansette Conquest record player, that I bought in 1985. All I've ever had to replace on it was some needles (styli) (I prefer saying needles as well) and a couple of capacitors. People always make fun of the Dansettes, but they are very robust and long lasting. It's my favourite record player.
I have an Edison from 1916. All you do is wind it up and drop the needle
I serviced hundreds of the Dansette and other brands that were made in the same factory.
They were cheap and cheerful and after some tlc continue to give years of pleasure.

So rare these days, I have 0 repair shops around here. There was 1 but he quit.
Doesn't surprise me. No money in repairs. In the average week I make a couple hundred on repairs if I'm lucky. I may make 400 a month. By comparison i make 5x that archiving video and film to DVD or USB.

A little unjusel trick when you need a little smaller belt to reel to reel players , cassette players ,,etc,,is to cut off the rubber from a Condom !! Yes you red right !! The rubber ring from the base off a Condom works perfekt in most case ,, the rubber in this ring last a long time !! Can be the solution in many ways 😂
I got a 505 for cheap but the pitch belt was broke I set it on speed I’m to cheap to buy a belt also the micro switch to turn on is gummed up and the rca patch cords are chewed not a big deal but I got a Yamaha at a garage sale for 10$ and it’s still in perfect working order yp 77 can’t bring myself to sell

@@12voltvids I had a 505C that I bought new back in the day. The cartridge mount is notorious for bad connections. And it could only take an Ortofon OM10 cartridge.

It's both. The changed spindle drops down the center of the shaft. I have the same one.
Dual used an umbrella spindle that didn't require an overarm.

He means "Steuerpimple", that little rubber cap, that is needed to let the automatic system play correctly.

Maybe try a piece of a hard nylon circuit board standoff ?, just a thought

@@12voltvids I just threw that out there, thinking that the 'pimple ' needed to be hard, nylon type material and have a rounded head where it would ride on the plastic lever assembly, but it looks like the screen spline works! Here rent is redecules. 2000 a month for an apartment. That's significantly higher then my mortgage payment was when i had one. I could barely afford to rent now. I can't imagine people strapped for 4500 or 5000 a month mortgage payments.

I restore 3 to 5 duals a week. Just did one in 1:39. Complete disassemble ultrasonic clean with wet sanded and polished lid. I see you are still using that horribly bad HS orchestra LP.

This is not a piece of crap. If cleaned, lubricated and replaced the dried up grease in the command wheel with the original grease (not just any grease!) and adjusted properly it will be fit for many years to come, it will probably outlive you. Oh, I would have removed the counter weight before lifting the unit from the console and placed the chassis on an appropriate piece of foam so the tone arm bearings are protected from being damaged as much as possible. Compare this oldie with any Rega, yes, hook them up to good measuring equipment and see what “this piece of crap” is capable of….and which one is better. I already can tell you, this Dual will humiliate any Rega.
These were a piece of crap when they left the factory. Starting at double speed half the time. Won't hurt the tone arm bearing. It's the same weight regardless of the orientation.
@@12voltvids Sure, as for the motor I agree. Dual should have done better research. As for the overall construction such as tone arm bearings, sturdiness of the turntable in general and capability of taking even the most demanding carts available, high compliance ones in particular, these turntables were outstanding quality. I have sold hundreds of them in our shop. They date from a time when stuff was repaired if something went wrong and they needed maintenance. Duals hated smokey environments more than other similar equipment. Most problems occurred over time with Duals that were used in such circumstances. Like many other equipment but precision mechanisms in particular.

I avoid any Dual that isn't the 1019. The 1019 is the perfect balance between modern enough to be hifi, and old enough to be solid. They are absolute junk to work on and full of unneccesary complications. And EVERYONE WANTS A DUAL. They don't even sound spectacular.

A lot of 1000 series have crappy pot metal platters which in my experience are beginning to warp. Combine that with an idler wheel and you have wow city.

Because i couldn't charge enough for. You can already buy the soft start for these motors. Problem is they fail left right and center. I can't remember how many of those units we condemned back in the 80s with that bad motor so many went in the junk. even when you could still buy the motor people did not want to spend the money to replace the motor with the proper one so they tossed them away. A few people didn't toss them they put them in the attic and now those ones are showing up on eBay for other suckers to buy
