Hi Dave just a quick one about Nav systems. I used to work for a leading Nav company and there are 2 options which you talked about in your video. Fast and short travel. Fast means the speed that you are going. Short is the travel time. If you want to go quick as in time wise you would have to use Short travel. But if you want to go quick in your car you would have to use "Fast". It's stupid but true. Keep up the great vids!!!

If you ever want to do it the easy way, you can get barrel jack adapters that will fit just about any socket. They cost maybe a dollar or so. Then you just need a power pack with a 5.5mmx2.5mm barel jack (or splice one on) and the right voltage. You can glue the adapter on if you're worried about it falling off

Even at 70 these things still fascinate me. If it works I'll end up putting it on one of the several TVs scattered around the house. I also have the problem with weak batteries and incorrect data from my Fluke devices. Since I live in Germany, I also have access to our local manufacturer “Gossen Metrawatt” and their multimeter series. I have not actually encountered this problem with these devices. These "Made in Germany" multimeters cost as much as "Made in USA" Fluke Devices :D
Apart from that, an interesting video! Nowadays, I only look at classified ads and the like with a low price limit and actually only for defective devices. On one hand, because it’s fun to try to repair them, and on the other hand, I don’t like to spend a lot of money on old electronics. Even if I like old stuff, some prices for functional devices such as "vintage" radios, tape decks, etc., are simply astronomically high.
    Best regards from Berlin!

It will be a FLUKE if its accurate. There is a reason FLUKE devices cost as much as they do, and that is repeatability. They are held to very high standards by industry and government users such as NASA, Boeing, US military ect. They make meters that span many, many years. They don't change often and the reason is due to specifications called for by these industrial users. Dave Jones over at EEVBLOG did a video on this.
They have contracts with large industrial and governmental agencies that demand a very specific specification. They don't give a dam about selling to a back yard hobbies. They have industrial users that do not care about the price, they are paying for a specific product and specification and their meters are produced to this standard. Are there other companies that produce a meter as accurate as fluke. You bet there are, lots and they cost a fraction of the price, but one thing they don't have is the certifiably that fluke has earned over the past half century. I have a brand new fluke that I have never used. Some idiot was selling a 500 meter for 20 bucks on Facebook and I pounced on it. The guy said he had about 40 offers in the first few minutes and would sell it to the first person that showed up. Just so happened that it was my day off and I jumped in the car and headed straight over and snagged it. Was it hot? Possibly. He told me it had been his father's and he ran a repair shop but couldn't tell me the name of it, and he bought the new meter only a few months before he had a stroke. Its so new that the protective film on the display is still there.
I'll put that one in service after this old FLUK 12 packs it in.

It feels like that Fluke multimeter isn't entirely ok. At least in the past, they would never had let any multimeter leave the factory with such severe misreadings once the low battery icon shows up.
Either the icon shows up too late (when needed voltage for correct reference already is too low) or the reference circuitry "linearization" isn't doing it's job correctly. I suggest the latter, as normally, the LCD starts to dim before such severe misreadings.

Amps doesn't matter if it's over. Say the original was 12v 1a. It is perfectly acceptable to replace it with a 12v 3a or 5a. Obviously you wouldn't replace it with 12v 500ma or 300ma. That wouldn't work. It's not like the power supply is going to force 3 or 5 amps into the device. The device is going to draw what it needs. That's the max current the power supply can deliver without going I to over current protection or overheating.

I feel you with Google maps being terrible. I use it as a guide instead of taking it verbatim because of how terrible it is. I turn off the voice navigation because it'll hitch up constantly and tell me that I need to do a 180 on the freeway, go back 20 miles and then go on a different nonsense route because it calculated that would be faster. I also have to keep an eagle eye on it because it'll constantly tell you about "faster routes" and automatically try switching to them if you don't cancel the prompt in the 5 or so seconds it gives you for input, which makes it so you have to close the maps and open them again. This is especially dangerous on long haul trips, because you can end up 50-100 miles away from where you actually want to be.
I remember years ago hearing "experts" say that GPS map software was going to make it a thing of the past for you to have to remember routes to your destination, you just plug in and go. Yeah, no. It'll never be like that. GPS software is good at one single thing, making you frustrated and want to throw your expensive electronic device out the window.
It's the exact opposite, GPS nav software is great at forcing you to remember routes out of pure spite for the software, so you don't need it.

I do know my way around and had I looked up cross streets I would have gone the way i went home. Used to have a friend that lived about 2 blocks away. It just drives me crazy that the GPS always picks the stupidest routes and while driving i I realize that it is taking me the long way. Like through residential streets to avoid traffic lights.

Did the GPS save you an hour? They aren't claiming to save you gas or electric power. They are claiming to save you time. They do give you an option to save on tolls. Perhaps they should give you an option to save you money if your time isn't money.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 měsíci

No didn't really save any time. Still took an hour to get there. Another truck hit an overpass. That's the second this month. I think the government needs to start sueing the drivers and taking their assetts like their homes when a driver doesn't know his hight and hits an overpass. No excuse. 15 so far this year. The one that was hit back in July still not fixed.

I don't know why companies have to find stupid ways to rip you off. We should call it what it is-- companies just trying to rip you off. Apple is pretty much the king of ripping people off. That's why I'll never have one of their phones. The EU told apple they had to start using the USB C port on their phones, so they added one. The catch is you have to buy their special cable with their proprietary chip so the phone knows when to provide you with maximum charging and data speeds. Apple just extended a huge middle finger to their customers. I suppose, you can at least use a crappy, generic cable that's pretty much USB 2.0. I honestly wouldn't doubt they might dump you down to 1.0 or 1.1 speeds just to really drive home that need to buy their expensive, special cables.

You can avoid expiring devices by building a PC from spare and new parts. I had an NVMe SSD left and RAM that wasn't working in my main PC in combination with other RAM. So I bought an ASRock B550M-ITX/ac motherboard, a Ryzen 7 5700G, and a passive AKASA Maxwell case. I installed Manjaro Linux on it and I can watch everything I want. AV1 video is being CPU decoded but the CPU has enough grunt for 4K60 AV1 playback (even if it's not energy efficient). But by the time AV1 becomes widely used, I can upgrade this thing's hardware no problem.

If it was an ev it would have had 400km range. My range is 60 to 90 depending on the outside temperature. I wouldnt buy a full ev either because i don't need the expense of a huge battery. For my driving the cheap small battery is fine and a small 4 banger as s a backup is perfect. It goes like a bat outa hell on battery or gas. There is no difference. I just don't like burning gas unless i am travelling. Then no problem.
