    What a great video!!! I repaired my Sony SLV-686HF which has identical mechanisms you've described. It had the two classic problems you mentioned. I had to replace the broken blue gear and clean the p6 guide lever because of dried lubricant. I could never get the proper alignment of the gears until seeing this video. Your excellent detailed explanation of the gear alignment saved my bacon otherwise I would have probably just junked the thing.
    PS I just love your messy work bench where you can find the proper tool in no time. Just like me. After the wife re-organizes my bench because of the mess I have difficulty finding anything!!! LOL
    Keep up the great work.

    I really love all your video"s. The vcr ones bring back good memories. I started in the 80's when they came out. Went to Panasonic a week on the PV-1270 then to Sony for a week on the sl-5800. Boy was I confused after those 2 weeks. But have still worked on them. I would like to see you overhaul and realigh what I thought was the most mechanical nightmare of all vcr chassis. The G chassis. It was in panasonic,quasar, rca, and lots of others. Thanks and keep them coming. Jimmy USA (alabama)

      I believe I have done a G chassis. I forget all the chassis numbers but wasn't the G as in garbage chassis the one with only 2 motors, drum and capstan, and a clutch was used to load / unload the tape AND operate the front loader? Or am I thinking of the "K" chassis. Been so long.

    A Sony SLV575 was my first VCR from 1991. Great machine! I had to replace the brake pads when the tape started spooling out inside the machine when stopping in the middle of a fast forward. I don't recall what happened to the machine or why I retired it.

      This is why I showed it. The missing lamp you really don't see unless you are looking for it. Under normal viewing it is completely invisible. You can see it on color bars, or a full color or white screen. By contrast, if that single lamp was replaced, and was putting out double the brightness of the rest of the lamp you would really see it. I have no idea how many % all the lamps are down. All fluorescent bulbs gradually loose lumans over the life of the lamp. I know for sure we can certainly spot them at work when they change a single lamp in a continuous row of 12 4' lamps. The new ones stick out like a sore thumb.

    I have a total of 3 VCR's that have a problem. I'm working on saving VHS tapes that I've recorded over many years to a digital format and I have only one working VCR. I'm hoping to get at least 2 of these repaired.
    The VCR's I have is a Sony SLV-N700, a Sony VCR/DVD combo SLV-D360P and I purchased a used JVC HR-XVC11 (which is a VCR/DVD combo) from Goodwill to have a second working VCR (it was the only one they had).
    The Sony SLV-N700 tries to load a VHS tape, and before it's completely loaded, you can hear (and see with the cover off) the rewind take up wheel spinning. Before the tape fully loads it ejects. Sometimes the tape does fully load, but the tape indicator on the front display flashes.
    The Sony SLV-D360P VCR/DVD combo, a couple tapes broke while winding a tape. Now when trying to load a tape, it won't load. The only way it'll load is to spin the loading motor to get the tape to load ... however even though it loads the spindles don't move and it sometimes ejects the tape ... however when it ejects, the tape isn't taken up.
    The JVC HR-XVC11 VCR/DVD combo (the one bought from Goodwill) started to work fine, but the audio cut out and now there is no audio.
    Any ideas and can these be repaired for a reasonable price??

    We used to have this same exact Sony VCR back around 1991 or so, but ours later broke like around 2007, and it's a really darn shame, since I liked that VCR. We also lost the remote over time (since disabling the on-screen counter display was so annoying to do since it required the matching Sony remote). Ironically, I also recall that the system date and time settings on this Sony VCR model could only go from January 1, 1991, all the way up to December 31, 2006 for some reason (it can't go to any further system dates after the year 2006).

    I opened and the guide arms were in the up position and seemed to be stuck.
    I followed the breakdown and the smaller gear on the cam gear has a stripped part.
    Also, the long sawtooth gear wouldn't move.
    Is this worth repairing?

    I had to order that blue gear and when I went to put the white gear back
    in, I got it in place but then the center pin that it fits on - pushed
    down where I couldn't get the snap on. So I took it off and tried again
    and it now keeps pushing in. When I did get the gear on and the snap
    on the pin - I started to put the large white gear on and as I rotated
    the gears it pulled that pin up making the gear vulnerable to being
    stripped. Do I need to glue that pin now? It has a perfect slip hole
    but nothing to hold it in place

    The good designs make the job really nice to do, the bad ones make you wish you had not started lol.
    Great you cleaned the mode switch, they can be a bloody nuisance, i can't count how many times ive cleaned them and the machine behaves itself again.
    Sometimes the act of taking something apart fixes the problem, very bloody annoying as you dont get to know what the real fault was :-(.
    It's a shame that vcr's have been deemed dead, very handy time shifters.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 7 lety +2

      Well we did see the symptom, no take up of the tape on the supply side in reverse / rewind. So the problem was obviously mechanical. Sticky lubricant on the pendulum arm. A drop of oil solves that problem.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 7 lety

    Hallo,
    I have a problem with a Sony SLV-757 VCR. Assuming that I have cleaned all the mechanisms that needed to be lubricated (following your videos): blue gear replaced, switch rotator and pich roller lever lubricated, forward and reverse mechanism clutch cleaned, heads cleaned. I still have a problem to solve, ie when I insert a cassette where the tape is at the beginning, the Sony VCR loads the tape onto the head drum and immediately ejects it. Only if I slide all the transparent tail by hand, and then feed the cassette it into the VCR, will it accept it and can I play it. I state that all the various functions work: forward, backward, normal and fast reverse speed. When I rewind at fast speed, the tape that has reached the end is automatically ejected, while at normal speed the problem does not arise. What can it be?

    Dave, recently I aquired a few gems at GW. A LiteOn DVD recorder deck w/remote for 7$ from VOA. A Sansui A/V77 Processor for 6$ from GW. This has the ten pin video csmera jack. And from ebay, I got the Videonics MX1 for 50$ that needs a wall wart. Somewhere around here, I have an old saticon video camera, either it was a JVC or maybe Magnavox that I found at a junk store, w/o power supply. The camera had a ten pin plug. Q, are ten pin video camera jacks pretty much standard pinout? I think Sony cams were the exception if I recall right, but I'd like to try the old camera on this Sansui. I plan to hook these units to a VCR this weekend, and make a demo vid if they all work. But um hesitant to connect the camera to the Sansui. My very first video camera outfit was a Sharp Saticon camera into a Hitachi portable VCR, that had the same ten pin jack. That old camera may be stashed in the attic with the squirrels. Don

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 7 lety +1

      All the 10 pin connectors for home video cameras were the same.
      Sony used a 14 pin connector for their SL2000 and 2001 recorder, but the Beta 1 SLO340 used the 10 pin.
      Saticon was only found on Hitachi made cameras. Panasonic and JVC used Matsushita tubes, which would have been Newvicon. Sony used their "Trinicon". Higher end Sony cameras used a SMF Trinicon, which was a Hitachi Saticon tube designed that Sony built for their single tube cameras.
      Other manufactures used Saticon tubes, in their cameras, but once you open the camera it has "Hitachi" written all over it on the internals, so Hitachi was building cameras for other companies. When it all boiled down to it though, there were not many players in the video camera arena, Matsushita which was Panasonic and JVC's parent company, Hitachi, and Sony were the big 3 in the video camera arena. Sony being the largest, but the vast majority of Sony's output went to the 5 and6 digit cameras used by broadcasters.

      No it was a sticking pendulum arm. That is the gear that flips back and forth to engage the gear to either the take up or supply. That is why I took all the gears out and put a drop of oil on the shafts..

      Oh believe me I get lectures from some goofs on the internet, and most of these comments get nuked before they get read.
      A good example was the defective HDMI - composite adapter. I get called a cheap SOB for buying one off Amazon, and I should spend more and get a quality product. And what is the name of your company so I know never to deal with you. Trolls. They won't get a response, and will have their comment deleted. For a few that have made a personal attack on my character, well I have a button that I can click that says the user is harassing me. I don't use that one often, but I have. Almost used it a few weeks ago, after I made the video about my content being stolen, and re-uploaded by another user. A few know-it-all's claimed that I have no rights to my video content I upload.
      Well I showed them how seriously youtube took this and removed the content the other user copied from my channel. Even with that these same users claimed that the link (of the removed content) proved nothing, because well the content had already been removed. "Where is your evidence" was one such remark. I don't have time for these people. I just go on, make my videos, and help people get their stuff going as cheaply as possible. I love the ones that criticize me for using heat guns or halogen lamps to re-flow BGA solder.
      How I should invest thousands in a proper re-flow station. Again, if I did this for a living I would do that, but I don't and 99% of people watching also do not have re-flow stations at their disposal, and those that do, well they don't need my help fixing stuff as they are in the business and should already know what they are doing.

    I often see VCRS at junk stores under 10$. I usually look on back for S Video jacks. Those I'll take, but they're few and far between. And BETA are more rare. But I avoid the junk brands, and stick to better ones like JVC, Mitsubishi, Sony, Panny, Toshiba Hitachi, and maybe the better Sharp. Samsung, Funai, Daewoo, RCA, Sears, Memerex, Philips, Magnavox, GPX, Gold Star, Zenith, etc, are most common. I have a few tape eaters and reject jammers. I usually scrap them, and buy replacements at junk stores because getting parts is near impossible, even belts are very scarce and cost more than simply getting another junk store VCR. You can test them in store before you buy, and now some GW's and SA's have a three day return / refund policy. But my Sony hifi Beta will get repaired, it has a tape jammed in it now. You have a vid up on a simular one, so I'll pull that one out, and see wassup inside. Some are worth fixing, like those with S Video jacks, like my JVC VHS that has trouble rewinding, like in this vid. Thanks Dave, I just may take a whack at it, beats the scrap heap, and if I fail to fix it, I still learned something, and then can toss the carcus away. Don

      The only machines with S video jacks are S-VHS decks, and yes they are few and far between because most people didn't buy into the better picture quality. They didn't care. As long as they could record "The Simpsons" and play movies they were happy.

      That's a hi8 deck. That is why it has s video out. I haven't seen any vhs decks with s video out unless it is a combo such as with a dvd player, and guess what. The component and s video outputs are only active when playing the dvd. The vhs deck only played through the composite output.

    • @josegti84
      @josegti84 Před 4 lety

      @@12voltvids It's dual format... Hi8 & VHS. It was designed for dubbing from Hi8 to VHS. It has S-Video in & out, as well as composite outputs. The video signal goes out untouched, with the luma and chrominance signals travelling separately. The VHS format is recorded that way, unlike other formats like laserdisc. Please check the specs for the models I refered to. I've been watching VHS through S-Video with these two machines for years. Also, in addition to the S-Video jacks, you have a menu option for selecting the desired output (s-video vs composite) through the scart output. Your tv scart input must support that though.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 4 lety

      @@josegti84 That is because it is primarily a hi8 machine, so it already has the separate luma and chroma circuits. Incidentally there is no reason regular VHS couldn't have it because the chroma and luma circuits are already seperate, however there is no need for it. VHS doesn't have enough horizontal detail to cause crosstalk.
      S-VHS and Hi-8 does.
      The reason it exists is because hi-8 and svhs could record enough detail that would cause dot crawl and color sync strobing. Think a hockey ref's jersey or a pin stripe tie with the color beating with the lumanence. VHS doesn't record enough information for this to be an issue, but hi-8, svhs, dvd and DV certainly does. So the solution was to sent the lumanence (B/W video) and chroma information seperately. Composite just mixes the 2 together.
      Since they already had the Y/C seperate for the hi8 side, the VHS can share the same circuit.
      The DVD / VHS combo units on the other hand did not. They had 2 sets of outputs, actually 3.
      The had component, s-video (Y/C) and composite.
      The component and y/c outputs only output a signal from the DVD player. The composite and channel 3 output output both the VHS and the DVD side.
      Laserdisk was a composite format. The luma and chroma signals were recorded onto the disk as a composite signal, so no need for an S video output. Some players featured one as a selling feature but all it did was run the composite video signal through a cheap comb filter to seperate the 2 signals. Any high end Sony TV had a far better 3D comb filter in it than any laserdisk.
      The only thing y/c cables do is prevent high frequency video signals from causing interference on the chroma line. When high detail video gets close to the subcarrier frequency (3.579545 for NTSC and 4.43 for PAL) it would beat with the suppressed subcarrier and cause the dot crawl and strobing) Since regular VHS could not record that high of video frequency, S video was unnecessary, and provides no benefit.
      In Y/C the red and blue signals are mixed together and need to be decoded, whereas component sends the red and blue information on it's own path, which improves the quality even more for digital sources.
